QUOTE (1977 sox fan @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) agreed we need some power in our lineup not just speed and onbase guys WE PLAY IN THE CELL NOT PETCO PARK In the closest he ever came to a full season, Johnson hit 23 HR and had a .950 OPS. And that was in old RFK stadium, which wasn't exactly a hitter's park.

Very good game today so far.

I think Cabrera laid off the sauce last night. -
It's all about what the team doctors say. KW has made it known that he's a big fan of his medical staff, and although we occasionally have someone go down, we tend to be near the bottom of the league in DL stints for our guys. I don't know what they'd say about him. If they think they can keep him healthy in the DH role, then I'm all for it.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:47 PM) Zorro TV shows in the 50s look nothing like Old Mexican California. Amazing how many places in California get used for filming random shows though. Lots of Westerns have Mount Whitney in the background.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 12:08 PM) I think Gordon should stay at third. At first, I was iffy. But watching him the past couple of months made me realize that he's a pretty good 3B. His UZR/150 numbers actually prove that. He started out as like a -5. He ended up at -2, meaning that he was a +3 for the latter part of the year. He improved rapidly there. I understand the desire to move his bat to 2nd base, but the reality to me is this; Getz/Nix appears to at worst be an adequate and at best could be a very good and very cheap set of players at 2nd base. Gordon's bat would be an upgrade there, but moving him to 2nd and acquiring someone to take the 3rd base spot means that we'd suddenly have no use for Getz, Nix, or Fields for that matter, and we'd be stuck trying to trade those 3 for a RF. No matter how much we might like Getz+Nix, that's just not a package that is going to fill our RF hole. And at the same time, finding someone to give us more production at 3b than we've got from Getz + Nix at 2b is going to cost us some anyway. I could see KW finding magic ways to pull it off, if certain teams were interested in certain people and were willing to overpay to fill positions of weakness on their squad. But doing it right requires 3 different things to happen (grab a 3b, find someone who will take Getz + Nix for legit value, find a RF/DH). Doing the last of those alone is just a lot easier.

Voltron was cool. Someone ought to modernize that.

Frankly...I just have no urge to target an infielder with the assets we have. Our need at the corner OF/DH spot is just a lot greater.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 10:13 AM) Why isn't Ben Zobrist in this poll? I'd argue he's in the discussion for the second most valuable player in the AL. Because I was just picking names as I went and spaced him. I apologize. Feel free to vote other if you want.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) Colts are completely under the radar. No one even mentions them anymore. They're good for 12+ wins and probably a division and have a good shot at a 1st round bye. Yawn. If they're healthy in the playoffs, they're a super bowl contender. As always. What more can you say?

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) Agreed. Alot is going to depend on Salmons and Rose. Salmons is our most important offensive player because even with Deng was good, he wasn't an explosive scorer. Salmons can be that. Good thing is he can score in multiple ways. Salmons never really struck me as "Explosive" either; he struck me as fairly sound. The only explosive scorer we had was Gordon. We've lost that ability until someone like Rose or Deng shows it. The difference, we have to hope, is that we won't need as much of an explosive scoring ability if Salmons and Deng and Rose and Noah and Thomas can be a solid group on the defensive end. That requires improvement from Rose, most notably. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) Some people think that if Flowers spends time at DH, we need a 3rd catcher, because if Flowers has to move to C because AJ is hurt or something, you lose the DH. I personally think the risk is incredibly low, and at worst, you have a few AB's in a season where you'd get hit. Not worth the offset of a roster spot if you ask me. The fact is though, our manager is not going to use his only backup catcher as a DH. As far as I can tell he hasn't done it in 6 seasons, and the only time he tried his backup catcher at 1b in the spring it exploded in his face and he caught a lot of criticism.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 09:53 AM) I just think we should be talking about the Saints. That convincing win on Sunday was huge, and very convincing for me. Brees didn't even have a great game, and they put 21 on a defense that I find to be the most dominating in the league. Is there a better DC anywhere than Gregg Williams?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 6, 2009 -> 09:48 AM) Im not discounting the possibility that the Vikings are the best team in the league, Im just not gonna hand it to them right now, and part of the reason is the schedule. They will play better opponents soon, it will all even out. If they are as good as ESPN and the Favreites think they are, it will show. People including me were talking about a Jets/Giants Super Bowl last year after what, 7-8 games?
