  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) True, Bolt, but with all the veterans we have on the team and the addition of Rios with plenty of time left in the season, with Peavy ready to lead us to some important Sept. victories and anchor the postseason rotation we should have won this horses*** division. I don't think the season was a success. I like where we're set up for next year, but I think this team dramatically underplayed its talent level, especially offensively, and thus, I can't consider missing the playoffs a success.
  2. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 01:48 PM) Prince is not a possibility. Kenny and Reinsdorf do not work with Scott Borass. For Gonzalez we'd have to start with something like Flowers + Viciedo + Hudson + D2 and then let the Padres have their pick of any 2-3 more out of our system. Or maybe we would have to throw in Alexei, but if we did I'd ask for Everth Cabrera back. And I'd do either deal in a heartbeat. If we make or win the Series in 2010 then the payroll is going to go up quite a bit, enough to keep our rotation together for a major run over the following 2-3 years. And I know that would be a s***load of talent to give up, and people (me included) hate the drain the farm, but winning titles at the MLB level always take priority and Gonzalez at about 25% of market value for 2 years in a row gives us a very good chance of doing that. If it wasn't for Boras...then going after a guy like Fielder is exactly the sort of surprise move that KW always seems to pull out of his hat. He'll ask about Gonzalez but there's just no reason for the Pads to move him right now unless you overwhelm them. That basically means Beckham has to be involved. Fielder though, he's just about to be expensive enough that the Brewers might move him for less than Beckham. There's just the whole Boras thing.
  3. Hater? Why I just plain don't like you. There's no hate.
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) I wonder what will happen to the Padres Front Office Brain Trust. Mainly, Paul Depodesta. As long as he's been in there you have to think they'll do a full housecleaning.
  5. QUOTE (beck72 @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) IIRC, about a week and a half ago, for the year, the Sox 4th and 5th SP's were like 15-29. with an ERA in the high 5's or low 6's. That was their record, but their ERA's was in the high 4's. The average ERA for #4-#5 starting pitchers is in the high 5's. The Sox 4th-5th starters have ERA's much better than the league average for those slots. Their record is terrible though. Which means that their starters are doing what they're supposed to do...but the people around them weren't helping.
  6. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) I'm guessing it is probably Wells. The clubhouse was the reason why the last manager went. JP tried his darnest, and I think Cito was a great manager to hire. They need to clean house there, but I think Cito should get another shot. I mean, how many managers does it take for you to realize that it's the players, and not the manager? If they could move Wells by any means they've have done so.
  7. QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) I suggested Prince Fielder in one thread, but it was mentioned he's a Scott Boras client. If true, the Sox aren't going to go anywhere near him. Plus, the Sox need to find ways to improve without weakening other parts of the ball club. Take out Danks or Floyd and the Sox are back to having a starting rotation that is one pitcher short. That cost us the division this year. If Contreras and the other 5th guys had pitched .500 ball, we'd be right there this weekend fighting for the playoffs. You can pencil in Dan Hudson, but he started this year in LOW-A. I'd rather have Hudson be the insurance in case Freddy Garcia flames out again. Contreras and the other 5th starters were actually quite a bit above average in terms of performance of 5th starters. I wouldn't do this deal as written, but the reason we lost wasn't that the 5th starter was giving up too many runs, it's that the offense wasn't scoring against the other team's starters, the defense was allowing too many unearned runs, and the bullpen couldn't hold leads.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) I think it was Gammons' article yesterday where I read only 2 Latin teenagers signed since 2005 have made the major leagues. Someone told Gammons that the average developmental time for a teen signed from Latin America is 8 years. It seems to compound the silliness of giving these guys millions. By definition, if they were signed as teenagers in 2005, they can't be older than 23-24 right now at the max. It's not surprising they haven't made the big leagues yet; most guys don't reach until those ages.
  9. If someone's going to dramatically overpay I'm not going to say no, but there's a couple guys on this team that I wouldn't move unless I felt like I was raping the other team. Buehrle and AJ are at the top of that list. They just make everyone else on this team better.
  10. Give us one last solid outing this year Freddo.
  11. Foul stench of success permeating your posts...
  12. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 3, 2009 -> 09:35 AM) What a s***ty clubhouse that must be. I'm pretty sure they forced the last guy out, too. Who else is a holdover? Wells, Halladay? Someone's really poisoning something up there.
  13. If you could trade Buehrle alone and get back Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez I bet they'd do it. But that's the kind of deal it would take; the Sox would absolutely have to feel like they were raping the other team. Buehrles brings the team so much positive press, works so well with the fans, has so much of a history that it needs to be us being blown away. Otherwise, I'm not ready to go with Hudson full time yet, I'd rather him start the season in the pen or AAA, I'd rather be 6 deep in the starting rotation, and I think this rotation can pitch us to a title if we get an average amount of offense.
  14. Dodgers go down early, 2-0 to teh Rockies. I seriously wonder if they might not just be in a terrible place mentally right now, where they might just break.
  15. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) No, he is much more talented then Rios. I might compare him to Beltran actually. His upside is spectacular. He was just amazing against Boston last year.
  16. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 07:17 PM) Why? Peavy is pretty inarguably a better pitcher tham Mark Buehrle (although who pitches game 1 and who pitches game 2 doesn't really mean a whole lot in April, only in October). Exactly. It doesn't mean a lot, so give it out for emotional reasons.
  17. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 07:15 PM) Lets pass on the sentimental stuff. Mark has a lot of wear and tear on his arm, and seemed to tire a bit down the road. Moving him down in the rotation gives his arm rest. Peavy is our best pitcher. Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Buerhle, Garcia/Hudson You put Floyd between Danks and Buerhle to break up the lefties. Bah, putting MB on opening day isn't going to add any starts to him. I like MB, Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Garcia as my rotation.
  18. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 07:06 PM) Love me some Buehrle, but Peavy is the hands down ace of this staff, and deserves the Opening Day start, IMO. He gets to earn that next year once he pitches us to the playoffs. Mark is my guy next year until he gets outpitched.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:53 PM) Really the only thing that matter is that it makes our team better. I don't think anyone could argue otherwise. The one argument you could make that I might have cared about is that Richard in the 5th/4th starter spot might have won us a few games in the black hole after Conteras resumed stinking before Garcia and Peavy arrived. If we were 1 game out, then it'd have been something to be angry about. But really, he wouldn't have made JD hit better.
  20. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 06:59 PM) Does it bother anyone that we may help the Twins win the division? Only because I think the Tigers would have had a shot at the Yankees.
  21. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 06:40 PM) Peavy should for sure be pitching on opening day, although I don't think anybody being "fired up" has any relevance at all For emotional reasons...frankly, no. He gets day 2.
  22. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 07:41 AM) I am a huge Sox fan this weekend There's 1 for you.
