Well, at least he hit the ball hard. Damnit. Solid AB, hard to do much more than a solid line drive. -

Thome hits a ball to where the 2nd baseman usually would stand against anyone else...it goes right between the 2b and SS thanks to the shift. -

You know, not caring about the back stuff...Joe's numbers on the season so far remind me a lot of the 2002-pre September 2005 Joe Crede numbers. Decent pop, low batting average, low OBP, low OPS. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 19, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) It smells a bit like teen spirit. Here we are now, entertain us.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 19, 2009 -> 05:06 PM) Is Getz's lower? In May, yes, his is lower than both quoted numbers. Not by much though.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 19, 2009 -> 05:07 PM) You said it so much better than I did. It's what I do. Also, on the whole concept of a "Missing link", I'm going to outsource some commentary.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) I thought "the missing link" we were looking for was between aps and neanderthals. or neanderthals and homosapian. Neanderthals are actually not going to be a strong link between Homo-Sapiens and apes. Neanderthals were an offshoot, they were a line that broke off from the developing line and settled in Europe something like 100,000 years ago. They stayed confined to Europe until modern humans emerged from Africa about 30,000 years ago and then they rapidly disappeared. They may have been killed, there may have been some limited inter-breeding, but there's not going to be a "missing link" between those groups. In human evolution, there are lots of false starts...groups that diverged from whatever the main population was doing, evolved to some level on their own, and then died off. Neanderthals are one of them. There is also a long list of other species between modern humans and apes, much of which we can trace the lineage of through fossils. A sampling (not complete) is found in this graph. There are others beyond this.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) I say the official point to see if we are contenders or pretenders in June 15. If we are still sucking by then, blow it up. If we start to look good, keep in tact and go for the division crown. However, as others have said in the past, the worst thing the ball club can do right now is hang around somewhere in the middle where they're bad, but not bad enough to give up hope. Either way...if we're just hanging around 3rd in the division, KW will do something at the deadline. I don't know which direction it will be, but think about his history...in 2003, 2004 when we were sort of in-between, he went out and grabbed people and gambled.

Without looking...which is higher, Brent Lillibridge's OPS on the season or Nick Swisher's OPS in May?
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 19, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) What about JD? He's destined for 1B/DH anyway. Train him at 1B and have him play there while Delgado is injured, and when Delgado comes back, you put Dye in LF or RF, depending on which of Murphy or Church is doing worse. If we're talking the Metropolitans though...in terms of dealing JD, I'm not sure they have anything that really interests me right now. Martinez would be nice but they're simply not moving him in a deal for a rental. Beyond him there's John Niese, who is currently struggling with the big league team as a starting pitcher, and then a bunch of guys either down in A-Ball or who aren't looking that great at the upper levels. If the Mets wanted to give up Martinez for him, yeah I'd do that now, but otherwise, what would happen is I wouldn't want to give up on the Sox's season yet, and the longer the Mets wait the closer Delgado gets to coming back.
-
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) a phenom for Konerko is not possible, sorry That's not what he was saying...he was saying the mets may "Bring up" their phenom rather than trade him.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 19, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) The Mets aren't going to pick up the $20 million or so left on Konerko's contract. If Delgado comes back in a few months they would have no place to put him. Delgado is also a Free Agent at the end of the year.

MARK! -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 19, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) Braves fans were correct, the kid is garbage. His swing and approach need to be made over 100% for him to succeed in baseball. Methinks it never happens. How stubborn do you have to be to have people tell you that the only way you're ever going to be a big leaguer long-term and make anything more than a pittance in earnings is to make changes and for you to not do them?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 19, 2009 -> 12:55 PM) Someone likes all the Jerry West bulls***. I'm really not sure what this means.

Who are our SS/2b/OF in Charlotte? Anyone we care about? Because they're in danger. Grave danger.
