QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) The addition of Fat Freddy and Bartolo wouldn’t necessarily spell the end of CR/AP and Marquez. It would however bring the Adam Russell/D.J. Carrasco era to a close. I could see: Honestly, I'd really rather not see Poreda in the pen. The main thing keeping him from being an MLB ready starter is a successful 3rd pitch, I think he's been working on a slider quite a bit. If he's coming out of the pen, he'll never be using his 3rd pitch in a game situation. I'd rather have him getting innings. But Hey, if he earns the bullpen slot and the team goes with it, then maybe he can learn it in the pen.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 10:08 AM) I know its unlikely, but, think about this for a minute. What if Colon and Freddy were both actually healthy for most or all the season? That makes the rotation pretty sick. Not likely I know, but, fun to think about. The one downside of that is that it would bury 2 of CR, JM, and AP in the minors, while the other is consigned to the pen. I'm something of a believer in a pitcher needing a chance to work the kinks out in the big leagues, most of the time, before they can move on. Floyd and Danks had really good 08 campaigns...but both of them got the chance to struggle in 07. McCarthy, for example, was pretty rough in his first campaign in the bigs in 05, but then was dynamite when he was called back at the end of the season. You get the occasional Verlander who just comes up and destroys people based on raw stuff, but if a guy needs to learn to pitch in the big leagues, then they need time to learn to pitch, and the 5th starter spot can be a useful place to do that.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) Lets face it, those two BLEW with the bears, both of them couldnt hold onto the ball, especially wade. I know for a fact I was not sad to see them go. So they resurrected their careers elsewhere, oh well. One time is a random occurrence. Multiple times...that's starting to become a trend.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) It's too bad, because Geithner is otherwise an excellent pick. Everything I've read or seen so far still suggests he'll be confirmed.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) Sometimes. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees haven't exactly gone 0-fer in the past 15 years of their attempting to buy championships. Well, on the other hand...I'd say that since the moment the Yankees genuinely started trying to buy everyone rather than developing their own key guys (the Giambi deal is a good starting point) they haven't been able to do so. The Red Sox have won with the #2 payroll, but it's worth noting IMO that a huge number of their key guys have been people they developed (Youkilis, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Lester, Papelbon) or guys that they acquired in trades, sometimes with the talent they developed (Lowell, Beckett) or guys they absolutely stole from the FA market (Ortiz).

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:21 AM) Call me results oriented, but as a blackhawks fan who suffered through the 90s, I'm developing an annoying allergy to teams who tell me they went after all these FAs and it just didn't work out for whatever reason. The remarkable thing about baseball (not sure it works the same way in hockey) is that the teams who lose out on the high priced FA and have to get creative are invariably the ones who make the better decisions.

Ok, that's it. Sorry President Jackson, it's time for a National Bank again. Really, we already own all the other ones anyway. Bank of America...already too big to fail, so what's the harm in letting them get bigger? If it wasn't for the FDIC I'd be part of a run right now.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 08:57 AM) I’m not so hot on simply giving him the job from the get go. I think it’s unfair to CR/AP, Marquez and the rest of the young guys. It also takes away an additional motivational factor the team could use to get Bartolo’s head in the game. Cooper supposedly was quoted a page ago saying he had to earn his spot in the rotation. I'd be surprised if they guaranteed him a spot if he came out and was CR/AP in ST.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Fox cancels everything without so much as a TV movie to wrap it up. Firefly, Futurama, Family Guy, Wonderfalls, that class reunion murder show... At least 40% of those have found their way back in to existence.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 06:55 AM) LOL, carry on, carry on. I had to teach my dad a few tricks to get a few mice that moved in over the winter. He was leaving cheese on the bait-set and they would just take it off. I had to show him the peanut butter on a string trick and he nailed a huge one within 10 minutes At field camp up in Montana we had a huge mouse problem. About half of the way through the camp we finally convinced the instructors to buy us some mouse traps. The first night I set one with a bit of peanut butter, set it down and shut off the lights. 3 minutes it took to get the first one. My total for the next couple weeks was something like 15, but I can't recall the exact count.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 06:31 AM) With all his choices, slipping across a border, taking up in a new town, divorce and bankrupt, etc. he choose this path. And for that I applaud him. He has offered us entertainment. He has offered us a brief respite in our day to think about how f***ed up his life is and how much better ours are. What a selfless and caring man. As long as the pilotless plane didn't find itself hooking in to a building in downtown Indy...

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 08:45 AM) He's going to go back to the Braves. He was at the GT-Duke game last night wearing a Braves hat. Didn't the Braves have an up and coming CF that they were trying to clear a space for when they let Jones go last year?

QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:09 PM) Why don't more people want pax fired? After seeing the disaster that VDN has become...after seeing this team add a guy like Rose and actually be worse than last year...I'm a trading deadline away from joining that bandwagon. The next month is his last shot. Either we need 2009/2010 cap space, or we need to acquire someone decent, or at least clear away some of the Chaff. For God's sake, we actually ran a lineup in the 4th quarter last night of: Deng, Nocioni, Gordon, Hinrich, Rose. I think Ben Gordon is your Small Forward in that lineup. Whether or not we won the game...that's just awful.

I'd rather go with Owens and Anderson. Seriously.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 07:10 AM) Agreed, and I'll add that the Central doesn't look very competitive at all right now. I fully expect that at least one team will be surprisingly good, maybe more than that. That's how it always is in baseball. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:02 PM) I'm in the would of prefered Fat Freddie camp, but if Ozzie and Coop can install a decent work ethic for Bartolo then i have no problem with him competing for a spot with Richard and Poreda It's entirely possible that this decision was made because it's been longer since Bartolo ate his surgeon, and so he may simply be healthier. Garcia's really no good to us if he's not ready on day 1. If Colon is ready on day 1 and then goes down midway through the season, that's a lot better than being on the DL to start the year and coming back midseason because it gives our youngin's time to do some work at AAA.

New head of the OMB today regarding putting out information about the stimulus package and who gets the money. Response by a Senator: Go ahead, guess the Senator. I'll give you a hint, he's also the committee chairperson.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 05:58 PM) I really do like the idea of Clayton in the pen. If he added another average pitch, he could be an average to above average starter. Without that, he'll be an effective reliever.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 04:48 PM) Not to mention Marquez is the #14 prospect in the White Sox system. Why would anyone be eager to see him pitch every 5th game? Because sometimes that particular number doesn't mean everything?

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) what is the best we can hope for with colon? best situation IMO is 20-25 starts and a 4.25 ERA Hell, if we get that out of him or anything close to that, assuming he's on a ridiculously cheap contract, we might wind up with an extra pick next year if he winds up type b while walking.
