Official 2008-2009 NFL Thread

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) I'd hate to sound like a homer but the Giants can be beat, even at home. I do admit that the road to the super bowl goes through Giants Stadium. I just think the Giants won't have it so easy when they come to Dallas Stadium on the 14th. The Giants certainly can be beat, especially if Jacobs isn't healthy. But the key to beating them is on your O-line. The Patriots lost to them last year because of that Giant pass rush. If you can't stop that, then you're just doomed. -
Multi-location terror attack in India kills 183+

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 28, 2008 -> 05:55 AM) LTTE? So far, the news indications I've seen are that a group called the "Deccan Mujahadeen" has taken credit, but Indian officials are pointing to some sort of Pakistani connection, possibly from Karachi. Problem for now is, the Indian government will want to be able to put some blame on Pakistan. So for now, statements that the Pakistani government was involved should be taken with a grain of salt. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 05:56 PM) So, he's four men, 3.33333333... devils and 2.8571428142814... gods. That sounds correct to within a reasonable margin of error.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) Well, they re-signed Cris Carpenter to that crazy deal....then watched him miss almost two full seasons. But, in general, I'd agree...the Cardinals free spending ways ended about five years ago. More recently, they've gone the Todd Wellemeyer/Kip Wells route, to mixed results. If "Mixed results" = a world series within the last 3 years, I think most teams would take those "mixed results". Their key of course remains the inhuman monster they have manning 1b.

Edgar Renteria HAS Signed with San Francisco

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) So if I'm a terrible team, unless I'm getting a young guy about to hit his prime, it makes no sense to sign those guys. Makes sense, but too bad no one ever goes with that plan. It depends on what your building plan is. If i were a team like the Royals or Nats and I had some money to spend but not a ton, I'd look in to signing a guy like Renteria, a veteran player who might come moderately cheap on a 1-2 year deal, and look to spin them off at the trade deadline for an extra minor leaguer or two, or turn them in to an extra draft pick as a type B guy. -
Stealing thoughts about the man who's kind of still in charge. Sort of.

With the current roster, I think this is almost answered by default as "#2" because it's been since 2005 that the Sox have regularly had a good 1-2 punch in the order. Look, for example, about how many different guys we tried in the #2 hole last year, while the #3 and #4 spots were quite soundly filled. AJ was there for a chunk, I think Swisher was there for a while, etc. No one we put out there really did a job anything like what Iguchi did for us in 05.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 12:22 PM) I think that KW sees Bailey as the centerpiece, everyone else is gravy. I expect whomever else we'd get to be a good prospect, i just think we'll temper our expectations a bit. I don't think we'll see Stubbs ever develop in to a Sizemore type, but the Reds clearly expect a lot from him. With the things we've heard about Bailey losing velocity, and maybe even a couple of other questions about why...he'd take a major improvement to really even make the Reds rotation this year barring a trade. You can view him as one step above where Floyd was when we traded for Floyd, because he'd been up a little longer, but that's basically the boat Gavin was in except Gavin had about 30 more bad innings under his belt. Unless you think that Garcia on a 1 year deal was more valuable than JD on a 2 year deal, with Garcia's velocity drop already an issue in 06, then Bailey can't be viewed as a centerpiece on his own.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) Would the Reds? Stubbs is one of their top prospects. I think we'd be reaching for him. What we might want to keep in mind is that the White Sox do not need to trade JD. If they trade JD, they're almost guaranteed to make themselves a worse team NEXT YEAR. In other words, we ought to be reaching for people if we're going to trade JD. We're giving up a ridiculously solid player under contract for 2 more years who'll probably also be a type A FA when he does walk. We ought to be reaching. When we traded Garcia, he wasn't as valuable as JD to me, and we got 2 potential pitchers, and Gavin was sort of the throw-in for that deal. It's not like Stubbs is looking like the next Pujols, he's more of a speed guy.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 10:58 AM) and countless 'found' ballots to be put into the Franken count. oh i'm sure they keep trying to scam the election. Oh for crying out loud this is just getting stupid. I'm sure only the Franken campaign is trying to do anything to win the election. Norm Coleman and his campaign are by far the most honorable people in human history. -

QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) If a GOP filibuster occured, sure it should be reported. That doesn't make it a bad, obstructionist thing. Of course, that is exactly the way it will be reported. The GOP from 07-present blew through the record for most filibusters in any Congressional term by something like a factor of 2. -

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) after 80 precent of the recount complete, Coleman leads by238. With what, 4000 or so challenged ballots and 2 or 3 legal questions (absentee ballots, disappearing ballots during the recounts) still remaining? -
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 05:13 PM) Yeah, like everyone was going to allow this to continue when vessels carrying millions of dollars of cargo were being seized. What these pirates should really do is begin hijacking some oil vessels. We'd see how quickly the United States begins intervening with Special Forces. It'd probably be entertaining and worthy of a future film. Like the $100 million worth of cargo they grabbed in an oil tanker a week ago?

Well, it's official. Bush gave the Democrats SecTrans to be bipartisan...Obama is at least giving the Repubs SecDef.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) Furcal had back issues, and I imagine one thing the Sox are trying to avoid right now is another player with back issues. Also, the reason the Reds would make such a deal is because they believe they are close to competing...it's Walt Jocketty at the helm now, so I imagine he knows what he's doing. They'll almost certainly get Dye for two years and he'll be a big bat in the middle of the lineup. With that young starting rotation and guys like Phillips, Bruce, and Votto...they're probably not wrong if they think they can compete this year. The problem is, if I were the White Sox, I wouldn't give up Dye without getting one of those pieces that they need to count on this year.
