QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) 3's a great start. 17 would have been better.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 05:53 PM) not having Anderson in CF is really gonna hurt us defensively this series, more than most others because the A's huge ballpark. Not sure I get why Anderson didn't get a start. Brian Anderson is the worst baseball player in human history.

This Sunday's Washington Post will carry some really good on the ground reporting about how things started in Georgia, what the current situation is, what the Russians are doing, and why we really ought to pull back some of the tough talk, because it's getting us in trouble.

Has Beckham been promoted yet?

The WaPo today devoted a column inch or two to talking about Georgia's past human rights record.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) For example, what happened to FEMA for screwing up in NO? If I'm contending that the problem is the idiots that won a 5/4 election in 2000 and their determination to use the government solely for the benefit of their friends and contributors rather than running the government well...then pointing at Katrina is not evidence to back up your case. That's evidence that backs up my case...that the problem we have is the group running it right now.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) And you wonder why I don't want government involved in things they have no business being involved in... Here's the question though...is it government in general screwing things up...or is it the people we have in that government.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) Oh, so THAT's how they're so profitable right now... Oh, ok, and then let me add..."And failing to break apart or strongly regulate industry groups that are behaving as uncompetitive monopolies" to that list.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 10:31 AM) In terms of energy prices being high now, if there were some alternative that would make money, it would CERTAINLY already be done. So, by logic, it tells me that the price point of energy being high is only now justification for alternative energy investment tells me the price point on that very same alternative energy is just as high, if not higher. That means everything is bunk that's being spread by BOTH campaigns on this issue. Since RSO supporters are more "enviro-friendly", they're getting sold a bigger line of bullpuckey. Unless, of course, the government was also being used by certain elements to keep alternative energy sources from being profitable, by, for example, dumping huge subsidies on to the old fossil fuel sources, creating regulatory issues that prevent development and deployment of alternatives or encourage additional consumption rather than conservation, allowing indirect costs for things like cleanup and mitigation of environmental harm due to the use of those fuels to be covered by someone other than the purchaser of that energy, and so forth.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 08:47 AM) No, but Turkey isn't going to just "give in to the Russians" as you were (I think) alluding to. No, I was just saying that if Russia cuts off gas supplies to Poland as punishment for the missile system, they're not going to have any trouble selling it elsewhere. And Turkey's energy demand is clearly playing a role in their sluggishness regarding letting the U.S. aid Georgia.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 08:45 AM) I wouldn't be so sure of that, seeing as how Turkey wants to remain in NATO. You're actually expecting that all of NATO will suddenly stop buying Russian Natural Gas to support Poland?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) Here, I'll help you. Where did the part in the () come from? Did you add that? Did some reporter add that so that it wouldn't be a flub? Or did the Senator actually say that?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 08:42 AM) And that in the long run would be foolish as well, because if Russia goes out and does that (cuts off supplies) enough, they won't have any money to take over the world (again). There are plenty of other people who will buy that gas and listen to Russia's commands. Turkey for example. This is a direct consequence of the energy mess we've gotten ourselves in to...countries like Russia are able to win fights using energy as a club more powerful than their army and they can do so without getting other armies involved.
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 09:28 AM) Russia won't do it. I can't imagine they'd be that foolish. But I can fully see them cutting off gas supplies to Poland and using energy as their best weapon.

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 06:59 AM) Does anyone know if it can be arranged that they play on same AFL team? We're sending the elder Danks to winterball? Why? After the innings he's logged already this year he ought to have the winter off to rest that valuable left arm.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 06:12 AM) Two words is all I need to describe Tadahito. Consumate professional. I have 2 other ones. "OH NO!" - Chris Berman, after the error in the 5th inning of game 2 against the Red Sox in the 05 ALCS, right before Iguchi hit the GW 3 run bomb in the "Don't stop believin'" inning.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) Even though Silverio is struggling right now, isn't he still only 17 years old, or maybe 18? Frankly...after the reports we've seen over the past couple months...I don't think any of us have a clue. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 08:38 AM) I'm fairly confident it will I wouldn't count on any statement about any of those 4-5 really, really close states until after we see the VP picks and the conventions. -
Frankly, I want to see Fields get a full season to sink or swim if Joe walks.

QUOTE (YahtzeeSox @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 07:36 PM) Russia claims that it is building a portfolio for their accusations. I'd like to see this portfolio if it ever becomes public, because it will bring light to this issue. If there really was genocidal acts by Georgia, the Russian portfolio should clearly prove it. Frankly, I have difficulty with including the word "Prove" in that if you're saying that Russia could prove Georgia did something, given that there's still no reason to trust the statements of the Russian government any more than there is to trust the Georgian denials. It's not all that hard in a war zone to fabricate evidence of war crimes, considering you already have the hardest part; the bodies.
-
QUOTE (YahtzeeSox @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) It's funny that there is a 5-page thread about this here yet no one has mentioned the genocide that Georgia had committed on South Ossetia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLoBckWl-dg The propaganda that comes from our country makes me sick. Why are they making the Russians out to be the bad guys here??? The Russians are the GOOD guys! The Georgians are the bad guys! The South Ossetian population consists of mostly Russian folks.... so it's no wonder the Russians would jump to their aid! This whole story is a joke. It's twisted, convoluted, and distorted into a completely different reality. Go Russia! Punish the coward Georgian government for their crimes against humanity!!! Well, I will say that it's going to be very interesting having a pro-Russian voice on here if you'd like to provide more of that on this issue. Here's my question in reply to your posting. I'll assert that I trust Russian media even less than I trust Fox News due to even more government interference. Why exactly should I trust the reports from the Russian side, especially when it comes to accusations of war crimes by their enemy in this conflict?

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) Obama Hits Back At Author of Lie Filled Anti-Obama Book I gotta give credit to the Obama campaign. In the past, people say "they misrepresented the truth" or "htey arent telling the truth". Obama's campaign is flat out calling this guy a liar. And recently they have called McCain's ads lies. Lair sure sounds worse than "misrepresented the truth". Liar sticks with people. Just remember...every time we see discussion of this guy's book on TV...they're talking about a smear book written by a guy who buys in to the 9/11 conspiracy theories. That's credibility for you. The kind that our media just laps up.
