  1. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 05:54 PM) i think even with the laughable quote you are basing that on, they are both still rich While I'll agree with you on that, he's actually right around the level of Senator McCain's definition, and probably a bit under it. When he entered the race he reported assets somewhere between $456,000 and $1.1 million. After some Googling I can't find the exact value of their house, but they paid $1.65 million for it in 2006, and paid an additional $0.1 million for the extra land bought from Rezko. The Obamas reported a 2007 income of $4.2 million, $1.3 million of which was paid to the government. If you add $2.9 million to their previous assets, then they were probably still under $5 million at the start of this fiscal year by roughly a million dollars or so. However, if they continued earning at the same rate as last year they probably became rich under Senator McCain's definition quite recently.
  2. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 05:48 PM) I just saw the new Obama attack ad, it's really not very good. i think most people already know Obama and McCain are rich. Not by Senator McCain's definition
  3. One of the NY Times's economics writers got to spend a fair amount of time talking economic policy with Senator Obama and his aides, friends, and so forth, and it produced a fascinating article looking at the economic policy of the man. I'd say it's worth your time if you have it.
  4. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) They probably say the same thing about us. The problem is...outside of 1 year where the Twins weren't really in it...every other year in recent memory where it's come down to these 2 teams...the Twins have come out on top.
  5. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 03:50 PM) Hmm, Soxtalk. We run a favorite WHITE SOX player poll and decide to prove that the closer with the MLB record actually isn't as good as other closers. So let's start a favorite DODGERS List. f*** we can't even celebrate a Sox player who has the MLB record without people ripping Sox players. This list is going to keep getting better and better. Nothing like having a place that White Sox fans can go to s*** on their team and history. Didn't I already say Gagne's season didn't count because he spent the whole time with a needle in his arse? And anyway, I'm just pulling out numbers to prove you wrong at this point. I find it very entertaining.
  6. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) Wait, I did forget, we also have to look at the player's contract. Comparing salaries, Thigpen's paltry salary was way better then Gagne and his impossibly large contract. Gagne made $550,000 in 2003. Thigpen made $325,000 in 1990.
  7. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) As I said, saves alone does not tell the whole story. I'm a simple guy, I noticed that they have been ranking teams by wins for over one hundred years. So I prefer pitchers that win and save games. When they start ranking them by other means, I'll stop looking at wins and saves. It ain't how, it's how many. When did they start ranking teams by saves?
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) I smell some Keating 5 stuff on the horizon. Coming from the official campaign, that would be really silly. Probably more silly than bringing up the Rezko stuff for the 47th time.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) If anything, call up Owens for pr purposes. "South side of Chicago riots as Carlos Quentin benched for a month in the middle of a playoff race..."
  10. NSFW, an IM chat between the VP candidates.
  11. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Actually this was the one thing Kenny was wrong about. Acquiring Cabrera didn't really put the Tigers in position to contend with the Sox. Yeah, but imagine where the Tigers would be without him!
  12. QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Ellis Burks Man I was annoyed when they let him walk.
  13. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) From the McCain campaign: “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people ‘cling’ to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?” Well, that's better than the "I'm a POW and you can't be mean to me!" they tried earlier in the day.
  14. QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 10:00 AM) Gagne's 2003 disagrees, and that's without putting any research into it. Thigpen had a great season, but it's not even close between the two. Gagne also did that season with a needle in his arse.
  15. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 01:09 PM) On a side note: With all the fun the Obama campaign is having over this "houses" thing, that pretty much means he wont announce his VP today. They want this thing to get prime time coverage and a VP announcement would kill it. And I still find it hard to believe you'd do that kind of announcement on a Friday. And when are the closing ceremonies?
  16. So, first of all, if you're going to post an article like that, please include a link to the source, it's common internet courtesy. And if it's from the AP, they've been really, really b****y about that lately. Second...honestly...it doesn't matter at all to me. it shouldn't matter. It shouldn't be surprising that a man running for the Presidency has earned a lot of money, or that he doesn't know how much a gallon of milk costs, or that you don't want to have a beer with him. What should matter is the policies. But it matters because of the system we've allowed to grow up, a system that convinces people that it matters. A system where one candidate gives full policy details on something, the other responds with "Oh that's just fuzzy math!" and the media goes along with it. A system where 50,000 scientists come out and say something is really going to screw up the planet, so an oil company funds a think tank or two and suddenly the media thinks drilling offshore in the U.S. will give us more oil than OPEC puts out. Unfortunately, right now, we can't destroy that system without first winning through that system. And without a mind meld, I have no idea if my candidate is going to be able to put the disastrous system that helped feed the last 8 years in its places. But he's got a better shot than the other guy, the guy who calls the current system "His base", and that's a pretty good start in my book.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 11:22 AM) Yeah change! I am glad a candidate for President can use the "He did it first" defense with a straight face. Same old stuff, different day. Obama is no different than Hillary Clinton now. So, clearly then you're going to abstain from voting since John McCain's tactics pissed you off so much, and if Senator Obama's campaign had not responded in kind you would have voted for him?
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) ...are we saying that Obama surrogates post in the Filibuster? Come on guys, these 2 threads are so much better better when people talk about smart people stuff, and not this kind of bulls***. Oh, and here's the ad out today from the campaign on the same issue.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 09:49 AM) ...are we saying that Obama surrogates post in the Filibuster? Come on guys, these 2 threads are so much better better when people talk about smart people stuff, and not this kind of bulls***. Well, considering that the Senator brought it up himself today, I'd say 2k5 has a fair point (Remember this folks). Video:
  20. So...the key flaw there is that you're assuming the Baldelli of 2009 will be the Baldelli of before all those injuries, that he won't have lost any range or speed at all. I think that's a key flaw. If he's lost a couple steps from where he was or the injuries have hurt him otherwise, then you've got a potentially gigantic CF and leadoff hole.
  21. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) For those of you who don't read the futuresox forum, Crede's latest attempt to rehab his injured back isn't going to well it seems. He started yesterday's game getting in two ABs, striking out in one and was then pulled after the 2nd AB. He did not play today. For now, I'm much more curious/wanting/concerned about Liney. But thanks.
  22. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) He's not that stupid.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) Ah, I see. So Obama's spending advantage hasn't even kicked in yet. Nope. You can spend primary money up through the final day of your convention. The General campaign and its associated limits for McCain happen after that. Interestingly, this was actually a big deal in 2004, because Kerry and Bush both took the public money, but the Dem convention was a month before the RNC, so Kerry had to take the same amount of money and spread it out over an extra month.
  24. QUOTE (chunk23 @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 04:18 PM) I'm thinking that it's going to be difficult from here on out for Quentin to add to his xbh totals because judging from these last few games, he's being pitched around and won't see nearly as many hittable pitches. He had how many walks in this series? Even days like today are still going to push his OPS up there. And we're one JD hot streak away from no one pitching around Q again. When JD gets locked in you'd rather pitch to Pujols than JD because you just know he's going to homer in 3 straight games.
