QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 23, 2017 -> 02:09 AM) Guess what? You are wrong. But I won't block you over it like Tony blocked me. You are just wrong. That is all. DON'T HATE PEOPLE FOR BEING DIFFERENT FROM YOU.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) Gender stereotypes? Are we going back to me being uncomfortable around the person (male I presume) who stumbled into Subway in high heels right ahead of me? And I elected to not be around the person for a second time? The person (I'm assuming he's male which makes me scum, I know) probably didn't want to be around me, either. Sorry I was honest and said I didn't want to be around that person on that particular occasion. I am sick of PC, yes I am. PC hatred helped get Trump elected BTW but it hasn't changed society. We're still afraid of saying anything lest we offend. Hence the Merry Christmas controversy. As far as passing judgment on people, WTF. The person stumbling into Subway in high heels might be the best person in the world. I don't deny that. That person is likely a better person than me. On that day I didn't want to hang with the person. So I am scum? OK. So yeah, there you go. People are different than you. You judge them poorly for that. I judge you because you feel it appropriate to judge others. Being "opposed to PC" is, to me, shorthand for you want it to be ok to hate people who are different than you. To declare you're better than them. They should go away because you're normal and you're right. They are the ones who are less than human. They are less than you and don't deserve their right to life. "How dare you make me be PC, I should be able to insult them!!!!" Every single word out of your mouth has confirmed that statement to me.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) I am a decent human being. As much as people detest me here, I have good values and always 'strive' to do the right thing. I could point out a recent example but I believe we should not do things because we want acclaim or credit but because it's the right thing to do. Just because I have harsh opinions on some matters does not mean I am scum. Saying that you're a decent human being and being a decent human being are two different things. Why is it your job to enforce your gender stereotypes on others? Why is your interpretation of them the obviously correct one? Because something makes you feel icky you call any statement of it "PC and bad!". You pass judgment on people without educating yourself.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 01:44 PM) Anyhow aren't you all sick of PC? Just cause I don't like the way LaVar Ball looks or sounds on TV doesn't make me evil. I just read a story that said British school teachers have been ordered to not call the girls and boys "girls" or "boys" in grade school. It is not healthy to identify with a gender. When "not being PC" involves defending literal actual child predators and nazis, F*** no. Be a decent human being.

Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA
Balta1701 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 12:36 PM) Well, if you believe Otani's actions and the reports on what he's said, the money isn't that big of a factor and he wants to go to a team that isn't traditionally considered to be a powerhouse. There are quite a few elements of the whole thing that give me hope that the White Sox have a nonzero chance in this race. I just hope the org pursues it. It's certainly worth a shot, but the chances are low enough that we should be extremely skeptical. There are better fits who also happen to have more money. -
NY attorney General alleges the telecommunications industry created a massive fraud/identity theft scheme to support the ending of Net Neutrality regulations and the FCC is refusing to cooperate in the investigation. Could very easily have submitted in the name of someone here.

Not sure where this one fits, but Texas, California, and Florida are all getting a total middle finger on rebuilding funds from the government. Texas had something like $150 billion in damage from Harvey, so far the government's to about $50 billion, there's another $30 billion package out there, and that's it. There appears to be basically no money coming for any sort of improvements in flood control systems in the state, so when a worse storm hits be ready to have the impact felt nationwide. California is basically getting no additional wildfire rebuilding funds.

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 06:41 PM) By my count, 3 Republican Senators have come out as opposing the tax reform bill (Johnson, Murkowski, Collins). Hopefully this works out like ACA repeal. Murkoski just wrote an op-ed endorsing this tax bill and the health care removal parts of it.

I agree with Hi8 and RaBBit that there's no reason for these guys to do antyhing other than go to max out their bonuses, and so we might only have a shot at 1 or 2 guys that would be available for that $300k normally. However, I do wonder if this might shake loose another Thyagomizer type deal. When Ohtani was the only guy on the market, teams could look at the Yankees and Mariners and think "If we don't get Ohtani we're out the player we gave up for him". Now there's like 3 or 4 other backup plans on the market. Send the White Sox a player from your A-ball team for some of their bonus money, make your run at Ohtani, and if you miss out on him you go out and sign that catcher that was just released.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:26 PM) Yeah, Harvey broke the dam here. Everything else has flowed through since. Too bad the election didn't happen 18 months later, we might have gotten here without Clinton or Trump. Because being a sexual abuser and admitting it on camera was important to people who voted Trump?

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) 3B is a pretty glaring org hole, and the second best free agent in next year's class, who will be 26 at the time, just so happens to play 3B. Machado matches this team's needs so perfectly it doesn't make sense for the White Sox to not pursue him, and most teams who would hand out the kind of contact he'll want have their 3B situation resolved. Based on this year, I want to see Yolmer get a shot as an every day player there. If he's basically a 2 WAR player there, which is what he was this year while switching positions, then he's at least a decent big leaguer. Yes, Machado is a helluva lot better, but if you can fill that position with an adequate player who is strong defensively and cheap, then the upgrade to Machado is much smaller than the upgrade would be if we only had Saladino there. If Sanchez flops in 2018, and no one like Saladino steps up, then you're right and that becomes the highest priority.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) I hear ya. I just don't want to assume the Sox sign anyone like Machado. We all know that not every prospect will fulfill their projections so the Sox will have to to spend on free agents to fill in the holes, and I'm sure they will. I'm just not sure what those holes will be. There's so much depth in this organization that the one area I'd circle as "we need to address this soon and with big money" is the bullpen. We might well pull a dominant starting rotation and a strong lineup out of our hats by 2020, but the bullpen isn't likely to do the same thing with what we have. Even if a failed starter or two heads out there, there aren't a ton of guys at AAA who are about to jump up and support that bullpen. That's where I dumped most of my money in my roster setup. Go for broke on the bullpen and every other position still has people with potential. Conveniently, there are huge names on the list who will probably be happy to sign for our money if we are willing to spend it.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:13 PM) Arrieta seems like a case of a player wanting to get paid for past performance instead of what the future likely holds. He's a solid pitcher, but he likely peaked in 2015/2016. I'd be nervous going beyond 4 years on a pitcher who will be 32 on opening day 2018, and that has shown signs of regression. He's also solidly the best starting pitcher on the market right now, the only one even close to him is Darvish who is also 31, and there are teams that need pitching. -
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) I mean, he's right, but the problem here is less about the legality of it and more about whether we want representatives to be the types of people that would be involved in a situation like that. Yeah, i'm sure there are disgruntled employees who may be seeking revenge by filing false claims, but usually where there is smoke there's fire. If its still functioning at all, since he seems to be disputing the claim, this would be a fair setup for an Ethics Committee investigation as well.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) So the pitcher gets to dictate the pace and rhythm of the game and the hitters aren't allowed to do anything about it? Pitcher takes too long to deliver a pitch or calls time too often and they get a ball. Pitch clock. -
QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 09:30 AM) I'd love to add a guy like AJ Pollack in 2019. I thought he was a decent add - with his injury history he might only need a couple year deal, if he needs extra time off have guys like Polo and Engel who can platoon for him and not be terrible, and Robert can pencil in to take over for him towards the end of his contract.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) I think 5/50M would be reasonable for the player and the team if we wanted to take that gamble now. If we wait until next offseason and he puts up another all-star level year, we're probably looking more like 5/70. All of these numbers side more with a team friendly "I want to stay with the White Sox" type of player intention. If he's looking to maximize his pay day / meet in the middle to avoid FA - then you're probably looking more at something along the lines of 5/90. If he puts up another all star year next year, he's 1 year away from Free Agency with Justin Upton caliber numbers. If you wanted to extend him next offseason and he repeated his 2017 season, he's a $100 million+ extension.
