  1. Rapidly descending into a true voyage to hell.
  2. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 05:28 PM) I'm squarely in the don't trade Avi boat. I'm not sure what his value is, nor do I think most of us know what his value is. In cases like that I feel like the downside outweighs the upside. Who knows if last year was for real, but we're in the situation to find out. If it was a fluke? You lose out on some mid-level prospects. But if he repeats and turns in another year like last year? I mean he's still young and remember the excitement when he came in for Peavy? Lil Miggy talk? I just think it makes sense to roll the dice with him again this year. And this comes from a very anti-Avi guy a few years back. If he repeats a year like he did last year...then he will be a solid player who is 1 year away from Free Agency and looking at a >$20 million a year, Justin Upton kind of deal. While teams would have more confidence in him repeating it for 2019, teams would also know that he's a last ditch option on the 2019 market since he's only on a 1 year deal, and they will have other options like Harper, Adam Jones, McCutchen, Gardner, Brantley, Matt Joyce, and more who can be gotten for only money with little to no draft pick compensation. In the case of right now, his early career limits his trade value since people aren't sure he can repeat it. If he's a success, next offseason his trade value is limited because he'll be so close to his price shooting up. Holding him is unlikely to see his value go up by a huge amount. Possibly he could be worth the most at the deadline this year, if he comes out on fire in the first half, but now you're counting on him to "not have an unlucky first half" which could happen by a roll of the dice anyway. I see limited upside risk to holding him and substantial downside risk, unless we're willing to gamble on being the team that extends him ourselves.
  3. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 05:54 PM) I'd be fine with it- he'd probably offer a lot of advice for Kopech/Giolito/Lopez/Fulmer. If we end up in the playoff hunt and he's a liability, we can always trade him or DFA him I hated Jake Peavy's personality and wonder if some of the worst parts of Sale's personality were things he picked up from Peavy. All talk.
  4. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 05:34 PM) I LOVE the idea of Lucroy. I really, really don't see the downside if he's willing to come here. Personally, I'd even give him 3 years with a 4th year mutual option. Take the annual price down a bit and give yourself a solid veteran game caller, bat, and clubhouse guy. Think the upside is too great to not look into. Think about 2 years ago - ppl were talking $100mm salary for him. Sign me up. He can either be a nice flip candidate or he can man 100 games behind the plate and 20 more at DH. I seriously wonder if Lucroy will want a 3-4 year deal. If he does, then that means he thinks that's the best he can do. This was a dynamite player in 2016 and a weak player in 2017. He's the kind of guy who might look for a 1 year deal as a bounce-back candidate. If he signed a 1 year deal and was closer to his 2014 or 2016 form, then next offseason he hits the market looking for a deal that could be >$15 mil a year. Right now I'm guessing maybe 3/$30 if he wants to sign a 3 year deal?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 02:24 PM) Dan Szymborski‏Verified account @DSzymborski 1h1 hour ago It was widely believed inside baseball that the White Sox ask for Quintana during last winter was too high. But I didn't hear the mockery that I'm getting about the Marlins and Stanton. And yet we wound up being able to trade him for a demon of the ancient world.
  6. You all suck. Everyone sucks.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 11:27 AM) If we can assume the local broadcasting rights deals continue unabated...despite the cord cutters/higher subscription fees. The stock market has been doubling that pace, but how long before the long-awaited recession hits after nearly a decade of growth? This is completely irrelevant to what I just said. The 5% revenue growth year over year for a decade has basically happened. The doubling of salaries has basically already happened. We need to adjust to what we consider a crazy salary before we try to play the free agent market. A $12 million guy in 2005, a Jermaine Dye or Johnny Damon, is a $25 million guy right now. That's the price we will be paying next year. Revenue growth in the future only has a limited impact on these numbers since they are what is being signed and afforded right now. And furthermore, although there was a small revenue hit, we just had the biggest economic collapse and recession since the Great Depression and baseball still pulled through all right.
  8. Not sure if counts as marvel or not, but hey.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) Or the estate tax...is that still on the table in either bill? Yes. Face it folks, no one cares about this. Literally no one cares about the Deficit. You can see that here - the Republicans who were screaming in 2008 that $800 billion would utterly bankrupt us and would drive inflation wild haven't made a single post. They don't care about the deficit as long as it's not being created by Democrats cause then it's evil. No one cares about fairness or people paying their fair share. I don't care if there's a tax increase on the middle class. I'd push for one anyway, I can afford it. The Republicans know that won't cost them their jobs as long as they can afford to spend more money on ads next year. They are trying to do this because their entire philosophy is literally at this point "The finger thing means the taxes". They've bought so completely into the notion that taxes are always the biggest thing on everyone's mind when making decisions that they can't do anything else. You can tell that right here - the person out to sell this, saying this will create tons of job growth, totally mystified when no one is ready to say they'll create a huge amount of new jobs.
  10. The President can't even keep straight which mass shooting he's sending thoughts and prayers to.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 12:46 AM) $25-30 million per year for a relatively one-dimensional offensive player (corner OF/DH) is crazy in this day and age...especially with all of those contract years in the 30's. (And yet the Tigers were happy to throw that money at Justin Upton.) League revenues are growing at more than 5% per year right now. At that pace it should take less than 15 years for contract values to double. At that pace, $25 million for JD would be something like $12 million for him in 2005. That year, Johnny Damon signed with the Yankees for 4/$52 as a 32 year old. Martinez has been a comparable player, maybe a bit better than Damon was, during the years preceding his deal, and he's reaching FA younger.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 10:47 PM) Please don't blame Ditka. Really, the guy who hasn't seen any racial oppression in 100 years?
  13. Not even sure which McCaskey is being blamed.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 09:07 PM) Probably because the Senate bill has to balance out from a budget standpoint (instead of using dynamic scoring?)...isn't that the version that pushes the corporate tax (35% to 20%) phase-in back? Trump's not going to like that particular change. The Senate bill is the one that has to follow the "no more than $1.5 trillion in new deficit spending" rule, the House does not.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 09:11 PM) Zero chance, but it's a worthwhile policy to promote in 2018 and 2020...Brown possibly making a run at the presidency and going for a Robert Kennedy 1968 populist/poor people's campaign feel (similar to what John Edwards and Gore have attempted). 82 year old Jerry Brown? Running for President? He better have a qualified VP. Could we make this Barack Obama guy his VP candidate? I'd be ok with that setup.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 06:08 PM) Per the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Republican bill will result in a tax hike for 20m households under $200k and no change for another 50m households. Dude, which bill? There are now officially 2 versions
  17. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) I need a robot to help me detect sarcasm.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) I look forward to this being completely forgotten by tomorrow afternoon. *sigh* We wouldn't even be giving it a single post if it wasn't for an already available thread. It's an ordinary Tuesday of freedom.
  19. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 06:48 PM) Leftists - “Trump denies young black males a fair trial in China”
  20. If Garcia was traded they might want someone like him to supply fresh needles cover RF for a month until the thing in the minors takes over the role.
  21. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) Three or more is considered a mass shooting https://www.congress.gov/112/plaws/publ265/...-112publ265.pdf Depends on the group. The FBI uses 4 or more as their definition of a mass murderer/mass shooter.
  22. Could make an appearance even if he doesn't, still the White Sox.
  23. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 12:33 PM) Yeah, but Luis Robert looks like he'll be a few years away. But it will be nice to have a CF with good power and hitting ability. Wait, you were talking about the other other possible superstar hitter. This is a lot more fun than the "If Danks and Latos are top flight starters" game.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 11:33 AM) What an unbelievable run this kid is on. The rebuild gets a whole lot easier if we get a superstar hitter in the middle of the line up. I know, if Yoan can just make a bit more contact then that does everything. He's already hammering the ball when he hits it. Oh wait you meant the other possible superstar hitter.
  25. Xenophobes, apparently.
