  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 05:14 PM) I cant imagine seeing children being murdered like that. On average a kid age 3 or under accidentally shoots someone at least once a week in this country, more than half the time themselves. So imagine it. That's how responsible we are.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) Leo @chisox96 @jimcallisMLB Ronald Acuna or Yoan Moncada? 8 replies 11 retweets 18 likes Jim Callis‏Verified account @jimcallisMLB 39m39 minutes ago Starting to lean to Acuna. @Braves @WhiteSox That's how it always goes with these guys. The shiny new guy pounding A ball is more exciting than the guy trying to make the shift to the big leagues. Aside from Mike Trout, everyone has to adjust to the big leagues and that's their lowest value - when they're adjusting.
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 12:45 PM) 15 pitchers threw 200+ innings this year. 30 starts/180 innings would be great. Push them to 200 and if they wind up with 180 because a few short starts or a short DL stint...that's not a big deal. Basically, they start every 5th game unless they're hurt. No innings limits unless there are injuries. No extra rest unless they ask for it.
  4. Lopez in 2017: 168.2 innings Giolito in 2017: 174 innings So yeah that seems reasonable.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:12 PM) Northam was getting battered over sanctuary cities, MS-13 and the Confederate statues arguments over the final days...and the polling was all over the place. Pretty interesting that guns would come up as such a big issue at the last moment with all the talk about tax reform, ObamaCare repeal and the economy's performance (in general). It is hopeful to see that in a world where a race baiting campaign won the biggest election in our country at least it doesn't win every election.
  6. QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 08:25 PM) If Abreu and/or Avi is traded for underwhelming packages, fans aren't going to #TrustTheProcess like was done last season. Reason being? There isn't a compelling reason to trade either(given the package in question is underwhelming). And yet, even if people are trusting the process less, the fruits of it will be in front of those same fans during spring training, throwing 100+ and hitting everything in sight.
  7. QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) I've said it a few times, but unless the Sox hit a HR on the trade front with Avi/Abreu, I think the fan backlash will be a lot worse than what they experienced last year. I don't buy it. Even if I try to be mad for the season, there's a shiny new Eloy under the tree.
  8. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 06:24 PM) Same here. Didn't like it when the Sox would have to face him but he was still fun to watch. Really feel for his family. RIP Roy. one of only 2 people to throw a postseason no hitter
  9. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 08:07 PM) Will anyone buy his future as a 4 WAR player, though? I think the potential is there, because I think we will see positive regression on his power numbers coincidental to the negative BABIP regression that's likely to occur. Steamer's 2017 projection has him as a ~2 WAR player, but changing the HR output from 20 to 25 turns him into a ~4 WAR player, and that's something I think we could see from Avi in 2018 if the change we saw in 2017 is sustainable. If he's not a 4 WAR player but he's a 3 WAR player, that's still pretty valuable and worth trading for. One other note worth thinking about is that teams don't have a ton of free agent options if they are trying to fill those OF slots.
  10. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) Much easier said than done We have a good history of this and plenty of playing time. That's why I keep saying target 3 or 4 guys. We have plenty of open bullpen space. Have those scouts go do their jobs.
  11. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 04:01 PM) But that relatively young position player at an up the middle position = big $$$. IMO one of the cheapest and easiest ways for the White Sox to become competitivd again given their current state is to invest in pitching, more specifically the bullpen. I'd rather throw $100MM at four relievers like Reed, Minor, Shaw, and McGee than $150MM at a 33 year old Donaldson for example. I'd rather throw $20 million at 4 guys who have been cut loose or released or injured in recent seasons than throw $100 million at those relievers this year. I could readily be talked into throwing big money at a reliever or two next offseason. My goal would still be to find this year's Swarzak/Morrow - someone who breaks out when they're put in the bullpen in their late 20s or early 30s.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 04:41 PM) I initially thought about a 2 year deal, but I think that works against what both sides are trying to work towards. Swarzak will be trying to build his value so he can get at least one big contract in his career - he is 32, afterall, even if some relievers tend to last a bit longer - while the White Sox will try and keep as much off their payroll as possible heading into 2018 without it being a surefire piece for the future. If Swarzak comes out and has another 2 WAR season as a reliever, then you can look to give him maybe a 3/$30 contract so he can be your closer for the intermediate term, but if not, then there's no big loss. Do you think Swarzak would just say "this is my one shot" and accept 3/$15 or so?
  13. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) Tough call at this point on whether a team would rather have Acuna or Jimenez. Acuna has the better all around tools with speed and fielding, and could be a potential 30-30 guy in center field. Jimenez currently has the better hit tool and projects to have better power. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/260529020/pi...z-ronald-acuna/ Callis said it's very close, but he would lean Acuna due to the better speed and glove. Jimenez could very well be a player that absolutely tears the cover off the ball in 2018 as he starts to hone his power potential. We'll just have to settle for our 30/30 guy being at 2b.
  14. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) Maybe. But it seems like these conversations only occur when some mass shooting happens and nobody has come up with a way to stop those. Except for the rest of the world.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:44 AM) If there is a plan that I like including FAs this year, it's spending to get top BP arms now and then spending big on the class next year. In the BP arms case, truly feel we could get rid of them if needed even if they are lesser performing. I feel like the real trick this year is to try to find a Kahnle/Swarzak/Morrow/Wade Davis/Andrew Miller - a guy who is picked up for little cost who then breaks out in a relief role. There's a bunch of them around, but it seems like they come out of no where every year. If you find 1 or 2 of those in the next 2 seasons and then you throw in the one big money FA next to them, then you have the strong core of a bullpen. I'd like to go and sign like 3 or 4 guys who have ERAs above 4 as starters or relievers for moderately small money and see if 1 or 2 of them can break out into what Swarzak did last year. That or grab a guy or two in trades who similarly has some chance of breaking out.
  16. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:48 AM) it didn't go to the floor because of the language. “It shall be unlawful for any person to import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, a trigger crank, a bump-fire device or any part, combination of parts, component, device, attachment or accessory that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun,” the bill states. That bolded part is what kills it. You replace a trigger or a spring and the gun fires a half second faster, you now violated a law. Springs break and get replaced all the time. Some people need a lighter trigger pull, but in theory that makes the gun shoot faster, so off to jail for you! yeah, that's common sense alright. So...you do realize that if a bill is brought up before a committee, it is possible to offer something called an "Amendment" to the bill that would alter the language? Same thing on the floor of the House/Senate? And that amendments can be added by majority vote if that is something the majority wants to happen? The majority wants bump stocks legal right now. Las Vegas was great marketing. That is the majority opinion of the United States Congress as run by the Republican Party.
  17. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) Gun control means using 2 hands. And as long as this guy used 2 hands then the end result is positive and fine.
  18. For reference, thread moved, as I'm sure most expected.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:43 AM) Greg Monroe and a late first. Great deal for Bucks. I don't know why, I hate jason kidd as a man, but I'm kinda happy for the bucks. There seems to be plenty of reasons out there.
  20. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:43 AM) http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sen-feinste...ory?id=50276506 So what is the issue with this language? The law has to define what these things are in order to have the language be useful.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 10:39 AM) And that reply had absolutely not one f***ing thing to do with bump stocks that I talked about. You do realize that the Democrats can't bring a bill to the floor since your party controls both houses of Congress right? The good news is that Slidefire has completed dealing with the backlog of orders they received after their spectacular marketing successes in Vegas, so now there are tens of thousands more of those around.
  22. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) Next years free agent class might be better and those players will be super expensive. Does anybody really think that JR is going to throw out big money for them? If we're not willing to do so, then we've missed the point of these trades.
  23. So, per one of these analyses, the tax rate I'd have paid while in Graduate School would have been more than 50%. Graduate school would have been impossible and this tax package would literally have ruined any hope of doing what I wanted to do in my life.
  24. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 11:32 AM) Municipalities are being raped on the deals now a days see Atlanta for instance. Reinsdorf got a vanilla stadium that serves its purpose. Why the ISFA does not utilize the park is on them not the White Sox. Imagine the revenue it that was a retractable dome that could host he Super Bowl or a final four? Are there any baseball stadia that could actually host a modern super bowl? Don't you need like 70k seats?
  25. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 08:16 PM) 3 relievers and 1 CF/Util OF. Would be nice to have another vet for a couple years in the outfield as the young guys are working their way through the system and one that is also capable of playing CF. Oh, I thought you meant Addy with the Reed and assumed he was a FA. Anywho, I don't want a utility outfielder. Throw Engel and Leury out in CF and see if one of them can hold the job, and Tilson's shattered body, Polo, May, and Willy Garcia give enough depth there that I don't see why we need the extra warm body, at least for 2018.
