  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 07:54 PM) There are multiple definitions of the word "rigged" being used in arguments here. If you are talking about the DNC system, financially and via super delegates, being set up to favor pre-defined candidates... that's certainly accurate, and it is one version of "rigged". But that doesn't make it illegal. If you are talking about the maneuvering of money to prop up the DNC and give Clinton more control, that's not really "rigged" at all, that's a hostile takeover. For good or bad. If you are purporting some sort of conspiracy to make it impossible for anyone other than Hillary to have won the primaries... then you just like to use the word "rigged" to feel better. They made it harder for Sanders, but there is no evidence of doing anything outside the rules previously existing and that Bernie was aware of going in (or should have been). Brazille's book sort of alleged the bolded, which is where this conversation began, but the documents haven't supported the worst interpretations of her remarks. They seem to have pushed the rules, probably unnecessarily so.
  2. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 07:01 PM) Fine with me. Now sign Gomez, Reed, Swarzak, and McGee and I'm good. 4 relievers? I'll buy that if we get a starter somewhere (I still expect rule 5). With Rodon likely on the shelf to start the season we need at least 1 more who can start. Even if guys are called up, there's innings for a guy who can start.
  3. Even still - the guy breaks 5 of Paul's ribs and only gets the lowest misdemeanor assault charge? No one seems to have figured that out.
  4. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Nov 5, 2017 -> 07:29 PM) He's probably a $15 million / year guy now and is price tag will likely go up to about $22 million / year if we wait until the next offseason to sign him. Why bet on him to fail? I've seen enough to be convinced he's a future HOFer and we need to lock him up now for the next 6-8 seasons. Just so someone says this - we really ought to learn our lesson about projecting guys to be future HOFs because of one breakout season in their mid-20s. If Garcia did the same thing the next 7 years that he did in 2017, he's still probably pretty far from the HOF. In 2017 he was a borderline all star and being a borderline all star for 10 years doesn't put you in the HOF.
  5. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Nov 5, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) No reason to trade Avi this offseason unless you get completely blown away by something substantial (wont happen) Plenty of reason to trade Avi this offseason if we get something that counts as "fair", certainly not requiring being blown away. 2 years away from free agency, price going up, if he's this good then he's going to be very expensive to keep and we may not want to pay that price, if he isn't this good then the best deals available for him will be this offseason.
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 4, 2017 -> 12:39 PM) Rigging the DNC primary = petty bulls***. Immaterial amounts of Russian bought ads supporting Trump, Sanders and Stein over Clinton on Facebook = BIG DEAL. Whoever I am supporting in 2020 really needs to make sure they have a foreign government supporting them. Now that we know that actually buying ads to support a candidate on behalf of a foreign government is legal as long as it's "immaterial" that's a line of advantage we need to make sure we take advantage of.
  7. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 05:31 PM) With the Garcia/Kelly thing, I was just looking for a near ready top prospect who is blocked on a team that appears to be interested in OFs in free agency. Kelly appeared to be the best fit. Ryan McMahon looks like another. Is there anyone else who fits that bill? There is no reason why the White Sox right now need to focus on getting a major league ready guy back for Garcia. We have a ton of talent at the upper minor levels about to hit, and a ton of AAA guys who we need to try out over the next season. A-ball talent is fine if it is promising - that's where we have room to play guys anyway. Don't worry about guys being blocked, worry about the return.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 03:23 PM) He was probably mentally ill and never should have been let in the army. The "got people killed" thing is a bit of a stretch. What happened was that rescue missions were more likely to get approved, so they would toss in "oh and look for bergdahl" as a secondary objective. He also spent five years in captivity already so that seems like enough punishment. I feel like he should have gotten some additional punishment but you also have to take into account the President attempting to publicly influence the case.
  9. This would also be a gigantic tax increase (10-20% of total income increase) on every graduate student in the country. Huge cost to higher education.
  10. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) He's a guy who likes to go oppo field a lot right? He'd be a great fit for them if so. Except their lineup's biggest issue last year was described a lot as a lack of power.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) Abreu, Machado, and Garcia are all vets at that point, I feel like outside vets brought in haven't been working out for some recent WS teams: KC- Gomes CHC- Heyward, Montero HOU- Maybin, Beltran The vets themselves may not have worked but the teams still did. Heyward's legendary "Rain delay talk", Brian McCann this year. And I don't expect Garcia here when this team is competitive. If they hold him for another year and he performs like he did this year, he'll be 1 year from Free Agency and looking at a 9 figure deal that the White Sox will hesitate to give. Abreu...if he's not extended this year I expect him to be a FA also.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 10:11 AM) I think saying something like that in the context of discussing the players protests(and what they are about) is where it was really a poor choice of an analogy. And he butchered that with a "tell us what you really think of us" slip on top of it.
  13. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 10:27 AM) Honestly, I 100% came in here expecting injury news. Every time it bumps. Every time.
  14. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 10:00 AM) Be honest people... how many of you thought that a Trump presidency could be this bad. The checks and balances are working thus far but his cult of followers are the ones that concern me the most. They are like zombies. I'm surprised he hasn't trashed health care worse and I'm surprised he hasn't had much larger international conflicts so far. The rest of this is what the Republicans have been saying the've wanted to do for 8 years.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) Next election is going to be fun. Trump yelling racial slurs at his opponent and trying to have the DOJ investigate them. So 2016 all over again except race instead of woman? (or race + woman combined? Or woman again?)
  16. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) A family of 4 under that plan has more taxable income. Now, that's supposed to be offset by the new tax credit for each family member, but that credit has to sunset in 5 years for it to work within their framework. Isn't there also a "Child tax credit" that they're getting rid of that would matter in the family of 4 case?
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 08:00 AM) Church of Scientology has been running interference since 2004, that’s crazy I don't even know which person this is aimed at.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 08:20 AM) This labor market is absolutely bizarre How so? It seems pretty straightforward to me - solid growth, as has been the case for years, but enough people still on the sidelines due to the disaster that was 2008 that it limits inflation. Throw in a mix of a whole lot of people on opiods, an aging population, a whole lot of business owners too dumb to realize that you can't get people with masters degrees for $12 an hour with no benefits if the economy is roughly normal, and an executive branch at war with immigration as a concept, and you've got basically everything I spot today.
  19. QUOTE (Quin @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 11:03 PM) It's good for people that are rich. That's the GOP goal. I'm actually amazed at how specifically they targeted the tax increases to hurt people who vote democratic. Line for line.
  20. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 05:09 PM) Really, really, really hope JR goes all out and gets his guy in Machado and doesn't settle for Donaldson, Donaldson is already aging and would suck at the end of his long term deal Really hope JR goes 10/$300-ish for Machado, likely a little less Another note: all my targets are non-Boras guys What a haul Machado, Kimbrel, Allen would be next winter With as young as our team is...it might not hurt to have a veteran somewhere.
  21. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 04:34 PM) He could quite down the storm around him by giving him a contract for this season. Which is exactly why he'd hire us first.
  22. QUOTE (credezcrew24 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 04:19 PM) I don't see how the logic in signing anyone that takes away from Delmonico's reps in LF even if they are flipable and Avi is gone I would very much like to go into next year with a Delmonico, L. Garcia, Engel, and Cordell OF. I would like to see if Delmonico can continue hitting like he did last year, if Garcia can continue hitting like he did last year, if Engel could learn to hit, and if Cordell could stay healthy and be a decent ballplayer. If more than one of those guys flopped...or heck even if they succeeded, I would not expect them to be the only outfielders for long as Jiminez won't stay down long. If someone got hurt, then we have guys like Polo or whoever else I'm forgetting who could step in. Basically, I don't think I want to see us signing position players. We have too many guys who I want to get a shot.
  23. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:57 PM) 1 year flip candidates? If they're still out in January and we haven't added a starter by the Rule-5 or through some other means, sure. We need at least 1 more starter this offseason to cover for Rodon possibly not being ready.
