  1. QUOTE (Quin @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 10:20 AM) This is hysterically disingenuous and you know it. He took at 78 win team that lost a HOF level starter, have a season of a Top 15 pitcher, a gutted bullpen, an elite right fielder traded and a grieving SS for the first half. And there was only an 11 win drop. On paper it was us or the Padres as worst team in baseball coming into the season and we clearly played above that level, even though the team continued being gutted during the year.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 07:28 AM) Giving up THAT kind of talent, and taking on THAT contract? What at terrible waste of resources, all for a guy who isn't usually healthy as the center piece? Yuck. But....we've definitely seen deals exactly like that before. For example - the Blue Jays taking on Tulowitzki while giving up top talent. The Dodgers took on extra bad contracts in order to get Gonzalez. The White Sox gave up top talent to take on half of James Shields's deal.
  3. QUOTE (Special K @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 09:09 PM) Todd Ritchie (1); La Roche (2); Teahen (3) Which of those guys were center fielders?
  4. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 06:57 PM) I still think Mackowiak holds that title. Why the Sox ever though he could play there is beyond me. This. And it isn't close.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 01:47 PM) I don't think there's any chance the cheap ass Lerner's fork over the cash that it would take to hire Girardi QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) And if I am Girardi, I am looking for a long term deal to take that job with how quickly they fire people in DC. I could see the Marlins happily giving out a long term deal, but do the Marlins fit the money part of this? Even with new ownership?
  6. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 12:34 PM) Nationals are a good job...albeit they go through managers like crazy. Good point, and they have literally "1 last shot" before Harper hits FA.
  7. Wait so meth deaths are still going up too? I actually thought that was an "epidemic" that had been supplanted or turned around, haven't heard much about it since the industry-funded epidemic took over.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) Does Jerry still own the White Sox? Does this indicate he has something against Girardi personally or is it a more general "Reinsdorf is too cheap to hire this guy/Reinsdorf won't just change managers like that" comment?
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) I remember the first time it was posted. I just assumed he got injured again in the past month. This.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 08:18 PM) Over the last 17 years, dating back to when the Sox "got good," I think they've traded away all of like 3-5 prospects that really hurt at all. I'm just wondering why no one here is b****ing about the Sox trading for Brett Myers in 2012. Chris Devenski has only put up 4.3 WAR over his first two seasons as a reliever. There are times you trade away prospects who are toolsheds, and 9 times out of 10 those guys flare out almost immediately. Not having Tatis sucks, but it is what it is. Because, to put it mildly, what they have done over the last 11 years has not worked either.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 04:41 PM) They're taking a page out of Trump's playbook and attacking the mayor of San Juan on twitter now, threatening to pull out resources because she called for transparency. https://www.buzzfeed.com/davidmack/the-mont...PKMz#.krG4DYJnb I didn't want to post that because it wasn't a verified account, are we 100% sure that's from the company?
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 11:15 AM) If the Parks system is truly about the parks, the cottage industries of tourist towns are second to the needs of the parks. Living in a fully pledged tourist town, I understand the municipal dependency of tourism better than most. A lot of the parks themselves are suffering from the ridiculous amounts of people literally trampling them. Like I said the recovery of Mount Baldy over here was a big eye opener for me. So lets say that we need to cut back on the number of people visiting. Do you endorse that the best way to do that is to filter out people who can least afford it?
  13. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 11:48 AM) Yanks are hell bent on keeping Torres though, can't blame them. What about something like Jacoby Ellsbury + Miguel Andujar + $ for James Shields? Unfortunately this in my eyes makes no sense for the Yankees. The Yankees will save the most money if they can get under the luxury tax in 2018 - they're close, but have to avoid doing too much offseason damage. After 2018 we all know their payroll is going to explode and push them back into tax territory. If they swapped Ellsbury for Shields, they save $1.3 million against the luxury tax level in 2018. They save money on the tax in 2019 by having Ellsbury gone, but the multi-year penalty is going to be worth more than that to them if they can avoid it.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) Don't play him. Cut him after getting him or cut him early if he sucks. The whole point of that idea is getting the prospects. He only has one more year left on the deal. It's a better idea than taking on Ellsbury's 3 remaining years. Jesus christ that's a lot of money. $63 million guaranteed with a $5 million buyout to bring it up to $68.4 million total. I will happily take on that deal if they include Torres.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) Not sure where he would play here either. We already have a couple of DH's in the starting line up, with a couple of more potentially on the way in our top two draft picks last season. You're expecting Burger to be up this year?
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 08:30 AM) We knew that the dossier started its life with the Jeb and Cruz campaigns and after the primaries was then funded by "Democrat-associated people" but the DNC and Clinton camp denied direct involvement IIRC. Either way though, there's nothing unusual about conducting opposition research. The work appears to have been legit, and Mueller and Co. will investigate and substantiate what claims, if any, are true. And yeah it's still a couple of steps removed from receiving emails saying "would you like to collude with the Russian government's efforts to help you win" "yes!!!!" https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/nation...bbb9_story.html It is plausibly also worth noting that someone felt it important to send the name of the Democrat involved in paying for this opposition research to the Washington Post without sending the name of the Republican. Almost as if someone is scared of more of its contents being verified and trying to distract, but without damaging anyone on that side.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 05:58 PM) I probably should have clarified I meant current republican politicians. I think most of them have the same thoughts these 3 have, but are afraid of what they may lose if they say. There are obviously a few screwballs that bow to his every word, but the juvenile way he works can't go on. At some point more will break. They have to. It isn't like he is suddenly going to behave like an adult. And if they get their tax cuts, Trump will take full credit like he is the stock market. Yeah, but the Republicans have bigger priorities. After his brave speech yesterday about how we can't let this possibly go on any more, Jeff Flake Bravely stood up and said "if a bank steals $20 from a million customers, we should be ok with that. That's the kind of thing that makes America work, small time fraud on huge scales." Brave.
  18. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 03:23 AM) I honestly think that Trump in the long run will do more damage to the GOP than anyone can imagine right now. His behavior is just not sustainable. At some point the vast majority will reject Trumpism, it is already opposed by the majority of Americans. Either that or this country is truly dumber than we think and it's on full on decline. To the first - yeah, but the minority has made it so difficult for the rest to vote that it doesn't matter. To the latter, remember, if the whole country declines, the "Blah" peoples decline to. We've decided as a nation we're ok with that.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 02:50 PM) McCain who has nothing to lose, Corker who is retiring and Flake who is retiring all bashing Trump. I really wonder if he really has more than 10% actual support in the republican party if honesty actually ever meant anything. It sure looks to me like the Republican party is basically purging itself of anyone who doesn't wholeheartedly endorse Trumpism in word, thought, and deed. Just voting with them isn't enough.
  20. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 11:58 AM) On Garfien's podcast awhile back, he and Dan Hayes seemed pretty confident that the White Sox will hit big on this new TV deal. They even were making it seem as if they can use some of that $$ on the roster-- which is why they think Reinsdorf will go after some big time free agents in 2019! The Sox should be knocking on the playoffs door that year (if not getting closer to it). With Reinsdorf's age and desire to win one more WS, I just don't see a scenario where the Sox do NOT open up their wallets that year. Hmmm. A Manny Machado signing? A Chris Sale return? Dare I even say Clayton Kershaw? Chris Sale isn't a free agent until after the 2019 season.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 10:35 AM) WGN isn't broadcasting games nationally anymore. They are out of the sports business for the superstation. Those games only go locally into the Chicago market. I have not watched that network once since they stopped broadcasting the Bulls and White Sox nationally.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 11:18 AM) Not a lot of blame on GarPax in there Did you and I read the same article?
  23. Nick Friedell creates something like an 8 page term paper, 12-part story starting with the Rose-Bulls and outlining how things got this bad. I gawked a bit at this one from Butler's trainer:
  24. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 09:00 AM) Speaking from total ignorance on how these Tv deals are structured, I wouldn't mind the Sox somehow being ahead of the curve and pulling off some deal that makes sense not just for today, but the future landscape.. Meaning - is it possible to work a deal with the Netflix, Hulu, Facebook's of the world along with a TV deal?? I mean, I know absolutely nothing when it comes to this ... just seems that with all the cord cutting and drop in sports ratings that it would be refreshing to be the team that leads some kind of digital charge. Think about how the Cubs grew their fan base through WGN back in the day... they grew it through cable and everybody across the US being able to watch them.. essentially they became America's team this way for people without a market. Is there a way to team up w "new cable" aka digital world? So far it seems like these "networks" have been dealing with the league rather than individual teams, which sort of makes some sense because why would FB only carry one team rather than partnering with the whole league? Furthermore, any deal with any of those would also compete with MLB.com's streaming system (which is as good as anyone in the world btw).
