LET'S MAKE A LIST OCTOBER '11 - FAVORITE SPORTS MOVIES

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) I'm a little stumped as well outside of Major League and Field of Dreams. Sandlot? Remember the Titans? Oh yeah, Sandlot is probably on there. I think Remember The Titans was already up there. I don't feel like sifting through it -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) The most important thing Washington did was decide that he didn't want to be come a king/dictator. The army probably would have followed him if he'd wanted to. But that's hardly important. The fact that he set the framework for two terms being the max, to be referred to as Mr. President and not His Excellency, or to flat-out become the monarch of America is something that was set up by the legislators in Philadelphia. George Washington was merely selected because he was the leader of an army that owes its victory to French generals that set them up to win. And once he was selected, he was put into a framework that he could in no way alter by creating an entirely new monarchy.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:59 PM) Yes, if you dont actually read my post. Otherwise, good one. But then we can't judge a rookie for failing, or any hitter for underperforming, because we don't know the skills it takes to reach that level. We have never even made it to minor league ball, let alone the majors, so we can't even begin to understand how much talent you truly need.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:52 PM) And yet, going into 2010, less than 2 years ago, the Cardinals farm system was viewed to be a disaster. Here's baseball America putting them 29th. So, what you're saying is that the Sox needn't worry because the same thing will happen for them?

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:48 PM) In other words, everything put on this board by everyone ever is complete nonsense Unless it goes in favor of a point he's making

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:54 AM) fwiw, only Parent irks me. I'm glad McEwing is getting a promotion, and I like Manto. but Parent's hiring is terrible. It started with the Ventura hiring being terrible. But with hiring a guy with no experience whatsoever, they absolutely needed to bring in a veteran major league coach/former manager to be the bench coach. Again, they went with a guy with no major league experience whatsoever.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:14 AM) espnchijon jon greenberg So Ventura, Manto, McEwing and Parent have a combined two years coaching experience in the Majors _ Manto's 2 yrs as Pirates hitting coach. Wow

Buehrle, Castro, Omar, Pierre all file for FA
Milkman delivers replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think we'll learn a lot about Beuhrle this offseason. Sure, most guys will just take the highest amount of money, but MB has talked for years about retiring, being close to home, he's made plenty of money, etc. It's time for him to put his money where his mouth is. If he ends up signing with an East or West coast team for a stack of money, he's basically showing that he's full of s***. The only teams that make sense for him (with his hinting about playing in the NL) would have to be something like the Cardinals, Cubs, Brewers, Reds, and of course returning to the Sox. This is all from taking a cursory look at distance on a map of the United States. The Cardinals don't have the room for him, and I seriously doubt he'd go to the Cubs. I'm not too sure of the situations of the Brewers and Reds. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:02 AM) I agree that there is no place for Castro on the 2012 Sox, but his tenure was a very bright light compared to the utter crap that has been the Sox backup catchers for as long as I can remember. No doubt. Widger had a fluky season in 2005 and I think the backups were pretty decent in 2000, but Castro did just about everything expected of him while here. -
2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) Wow. mlbbowman Mark Bowman by Buster_ESPN Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa, Joe Torre, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas will all be HOF eligible in 2014. How? I'm guessing that the required waiting period is shorter for managers, but still how the hell would La Russa be eligible when both Cox and Torre last managed in 2010? Either way, this does not bode well for Frank's chances of getting inducted on the first ballot (Maddux and Glavine being media darlings and all of those legendary managers). -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:24 AM) GordonEdes Gordon Edes by Buster_ESPN FROM ELIAS: Tony La Russa is the only individual in major-league history to win a World Series in his final season as a manager. That's hard to believe.

I think the Cardinals winning it all makes Pujols re-signing a ton more likely. They have the extra money generated from the title and run, the media and fan focus on it, etc. I don't think they can let him walk now. Some might say the opposite, but I believe this to be the case. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 09:14 AM) Whoa. Did not see that coming. Way to go out in style, good for him. Really? Before they even won it all, I was thinking that this would be a perfect time for him to retire. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) The true reason he's retiring........the White Sox have already filled their managerial position. If he can't coach our team, may as well leave baseball. Obviously. All hope was lost to him. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) I would imagine that Bud will decide that. Or read it off of a cue card that someone else already decided.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) Tough call between John Adams, James Madison and Ben Franklin. Hard to compare them really, as they were such different animals, but all so crucial to making it work. Washington was a natural leader more so than any of those, but he was also far from a brilliant strategist. He was a tactician, and his input into the way the country was established, other than his military record, was less than stellar IMO. Like shaping the modern presidency?

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:50 AM) Field of Dreams has got to close to the top. Definitely. For some reason, I thought it was already on there. -
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:48 AM) Speaking of, what the hell was up with that Family Guy episode? They throw in some relatively serious ones on occasion. I don't know why. At this point, I watch it the same way I watch The Simpsons. It's got a couple of laughs in it, but it's a shell of its former self. I watch it because it's Family Guy/The Simpsons.

What's the ranking system? It just seems odd that Rudy can be on 7 lists with 3 at #1, but Hoosiers is ahead on 8 lists and just one #1 vote. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:38 AM) Very surprised to see Rudy and Hoosiers both outside the Top 5. Wow, me too. And the same goes for Slap Shot. I'm trying to figure out what the top ones will be. Major League has to be up there. Even though Rookie Of The Year is about the Cubs, anybody around my age has to have it on their lists. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:32 AM) I agree it looks like it may be pretty good and AMC surely delivers in the drama category. I'm just juggling too many shows right now and that would be 3 on Sunday night alone with Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire. It's a gametime decision at this point but I'm leaning towards giving it a shot. Tell me about it. I already watch Dexter, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire and the cartoon lineup on Fox. I'd like to watch Homeland, Hell On Wheels, and Boss (is that on Sunday or Friday, as I've heard both?). There's just too much good s*** right now.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 04:41 AM) Good Luck to the people who enjoy The Walking Dead. Hope it keeps entertaining you. I think I am out. I gave it the first season and the first 3 episodes and it just hasn't pulled me in outside of that Herd scene in the premiere. Acting is awful and most of the characters are uninteresting. Time for me to see other people. I still enjoy it, but to be honest, I can't put my finger on exactly why. You are correct in that the characters are uninteresting. They're mostly all just paper-thin, no depth at all (but it has only been 9 episodes, to be fair). And I agree with you that the acting is pretty bad, but that might be caused by the lack of any dimensions for the characters. The only actors that are drawing me in are Andrew Lincoln (though the stuff with the son being shot is weak), Jeffrey DeMunn, and surprisingly Norman Reedus. I think the characters will develop more with time, as with most shows. They just need to find their balance in mixing character development and zombie attacks (which is what will draw the vast majority of viewers). For this show to survive, they're basically going to have to have a zombie attack/close call in every episode, possibly even twice. And between that, add levels to the individual characters. It seems right now that they're covering the zombie part fine, but all of the in-between stuff is just getting you to the next zombie attack. They need to use the "boring" parts to really make you feel for the characters. EDIT: Take Otis for example. His death last night was unexpected (although you knew what happened basically as soon as Shane couldn't explain what went down). But it could have been much, much better if they had actually given that character time to grow. There was a lot of potential in Otis, and you really would have been drawn in if the same thing happened after you got attached to the character. And now it just seems rushed and not that big of a deal because we just met the guy. Man, I used a lot of parentheses.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 09:50 AM) I don't think that's true at all. Each has a specific set of skills that are required to master the sport. Sure any joe blow can pick up a bowling ball and heft it down the lane or smack a golf ball down a fairway but at the professional level either one takes a lot of practice to really be good at it. I know the pros on TV make it look really easy but to maintain the averages/handicaps they do it requires a ton of skill. I've been bowling for about 25 years and usually maintain right around a 200 avg give or take 5 pins or so. The pros usually maintain 220+. Plus they bowl on much more difficult oil patterns. Can you explain this? I don't even know what you mean by oil patterns. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 09:50 AM) I put it #1, but I really can't argue. I was a 16 year-old caddie when it came out. For me, it is virtually biographical (minus Lacey and the explosions). Dancing gophers? You also strike me as much younger.
