I don't want to get involved in this argument, as it seems that it's being taken care of extremely well already, but I can't believe that the logic isn't getting through to a couple of posters.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
Milkman delivers replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 07:56 AM) That is my biggest worry. I don't think there is any doubt that Frank is a first ballot guy IMO. But looking at the people on the ballot with him, that scares me. Taking the whole "first ballot" mentality, and adding to it the whole "exclusivity" argument, (I could see some people only voting for 2-3 guys), plus he wasn't a favorite guy amongst the media, it could be close. So, you're just repeating what I said, eh? QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 07:57 AM) I think the "Wasn't a favorite by the media" will be balanced out by the "called out the juicers" part. That fact is significantly overlooked by the national media. It sucks, but it's true. -
2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread

I fully expect Frank to get in on his second or third try. You all should, too, if you want to avoid your head exploding when he inevitably doesn't get in on the first ballot. -
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 12:12 AM) I know people were saying they were out of it in May when they were 10+ games out. But on the day before the trade deadline they were only 3 games back. Were they still out of it at that point? It obviously didn't pan out, but that is why more players were not traded off. At any point during the 2011 season would you have said the St. Louis Cardinals were "out of it"? The bold is exactly what I said you'd say. Yes, they were out of it. It was clear to anyone watching that wasn't a complete White Sox homer that they just didn't have what it would take to win it. They had horribly underperforming players all over the field, a manager that didn't care and constantly made the incorrect moves seemingly on purpose, and a team that didn't respect the manager anymore. It was obvious, but you'll never admit it. And oh great, the Cardinals again get to be the one in a million chance that we point to for years to come to hold out for a miracle that isn't coming.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) I think there are far less people who would have liked to see Thomas as hitting coach than who are pleased with the Ventura hiring. For me personally, Ventura hold just a little bit more credibility than Big Frank in terms of coaching skills right now. Agreed.

Reinsdorf’s U.S. Cellular Field Lease In Jeopardy?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:01 AM) I don't think I've ever pulled out this card, but this is the time and place... are you actually a Cubs fan? Because you seem to truly despise everything Sox. You even say it would have been not so bad if they left, and that the city would have gotten another team (which, by the way, I am not so sure of). And you really seem to have an irrationally over the top hatred of JR, to the point where you are divorced from reality. It's easier to just ignore this guy. He won't respond to what you say. He comes in (at roughly the same time every few days), picks a random assortment of threads, and adds his hatred to the end. He doesn't respond to responses to his own posts. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) Does anyone have any problems with Adobe wanting to update on their PC constantly? I just installed a few updates on my computer that I have been putting off(Java, Itunes/Quicktime, Adobe), and when I rebooted my computer, an Adobe popup shows up asking me to update my flash player. It happens every time I update Adobe, it feels like I update the software every 3 days That happened to me about a week ago. I updated it like 3 times in one week, but it has stopped since then.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal Jamie Moyer threw for scouts last Thursday in SD area. Reports from scouts excellent. Nearly a year removed from TJ. Turns 49 Nov. 18. I want him to pitch until he's 50. I really do. When Franco was still going strong, I thought he'd do it. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 10:54 AM) He would need at least 3 more season to do that, if not more. That would put him at 51 years old. The question is, if he does reach 300 wins, is he a Hall of Famer? I still say no. Not a chance in hell. I don't think he'd even come close. But, he'd get to go down in history (I think) as the only 300 game winner not in the Hall Of Fame. He's 33 wins away. It's probably not going to happen, but that could be done in two seasons.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) Who the hell is EJM? Edward James Olmos. I'm not sure why people started saying EJM, though. I think one mistake led to it being repeated.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:58 AM) Bowling alleys have oil on the lanes. I think that's pretty much a given, but there are different ways to put oil down onto the lane to change how the ball rolls down the lane. If you throw a straight ball, the oil pattern means absolutely nothing to you. However, when you actually hook the ball, there isn't some magic force that allows it to start "curving" three-quarters of the way down the lane...instead, what the ball is doing is attempting to curve but because there is no friction - due to the oil - it simply skids down the lane. As long as there is oil, the ball simply will not turn unless the weight block within the bowling ball itself flips over and changes the direction that the ball itself is rolling all together. There are several differently shaped weight blocks too, but that's a different topic for a different day. A pretty standard house is what I've always referred to as a Christmas tree pattern, which simply means that the oil on the lane looks almost exactly like that of a Christmas tree. This is an easy shot to throw on because there is a lot of room for error. If you get it too far outside, the ball will start hooking a bit sooner and come into the pocket. If you throw it too far inside, the ball will skid for a while and still come into the pocket. Here is a decent and quick read about oil patterns with some illustrations. This will help clear it up too if what I've written here hasn't. Once you get onto the professional level, those sport shots become even more ridiculous. If you are using the ratios and typical sport shot being 2:1, pros will shoot on stuff that is 1:1 or even less. That makes for an incredibly difficult shot and one that I would probably average about 130-150 on, where on the typical house shot I average about 180-200. I didn't know that so much went into it. Then again, I haven't bowled since grade school so I never attempted to learn anything about bowling. All I know is that I'd throw a strike pretty much every time to start a game, and would barely ever hit another one. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:35 AM) I don't know, I've seen it a few times, and I find it just as entertaining as in the past. Maybe it is the nostalgia factor taking over? Same here, and your reasoning is probably right. -
QUOTE (The Baconator @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:28 AM) Has anyone seen/heard of this movie Session 9 from a few years back? I was looking around and some horror movie lists and it popped up as one of the top 5 scariest. I watched a preview of it and was stunned to see that I just stayed the weekend at that insane asylum a couple weeks ago. Apparently it's filmed at the old asylum in Danvers, MA just outside of Boston; it's since been converted into luxury apartments/condos. The movie itself looks super creepy and I think it would be doubly so knowing that I've already walked around the premises. I lived there for a year. And yes, it's a good movie.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:17 PM) At what point during this past season would you say the White Sox were "out of it"? See, I know you'll never admit it since they were always within shooting range and you can just point to the fact that they were never ___ games out, but they were clearly a sub-par team for the length of the season and they were not coming back. I'm also sure someone will say that's revisionist, but there were plenty of people saying these things throughout the season.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:12 PM) Yes, I much prefer your circular argument better. There are arguments on both sides which supports the fact you need to wait and see until they actually play a f***ing game before you can judge their performance. Right now you have Coop with a s***load of MLB experience as a coach, Parent who has experience as both a player and manager and Joe McEwing who has experience all over the place and has been called one of the best manager prospects in the entire minor league system. There is a s***load of experience in that clubhouse both on the field and in the manager's chair. How is my argument circular? And yes, I understand that McEwing has a fine pedigree going to this point. Perhaps we would have been better served giving him the manager's seat, or at least have him as bench coach.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:00 PM) Clearly, the reference to a comedy is to be taken seriously. LOL I didn't even bother looking up who that was, just took your word for whoever the person was being bad. I didn't know his last name was Brown, but as soon as I looked at it just now I had to shake my head at how dumb I was.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) Yeah, I agree with you, its baseball and Ventura is probably an expert at baseball, besides half the people who think he needs experience want Frank Thomas and his zero experience to be the hitting coach. I think you're making a gross exaggeration. It seems that the majority of people in favor of hiring Thomas are the same ones who love the Ventura signing. There are obviously some exceptions. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 06:18 PM) It's just baseball, man. Lou Brown won a pennant. Ah yes, the best argument to date. Some pretty awful managers have had success at one point or another, thus this move is great.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) who can name the bench coach for Rangers or Cardinals? This is a lot of whining about a fairly irrelevant position. Cooper is the guy they obviously trust and he'll be important in the dugout. If ventura likes parent, that's good enough for me. Bench coach Jackie Moore for the Texas Rangers: Bench coach Joe Pettini for the St. Louis Cardinals: In other words, they each have a f***ing s***load of experience.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 08:48 PM) I thought The Conspirator was very well done. Ebert, in his review, compared the Tom Wilkinson role (Sen. Reverdy Johnson of MD) to Obama, thought that was amusing. Have always liked Robin Wright since her days on Santa Barbara and The Princess Bride...but McAvoy was really the actor who dominates the proceedings. Called a "smart" movie, I think that largely explains why it never found a wide release. Also never knew her son (John Surratt) was "exonerated" a year later, an 8-to-4 hung jury. Kevin Kline's Stanton was obviously over the top, but you can understand it due to his close personal friendship with Lincoln which began as a rivalry. I was hoping that Wilkinson would have a bigger role, as he's my favorite regularly-working actor.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) lol at the Sandlot being over Rocky on any type of movie list. Is everyone on this site 12 years old? I was 8 when it came out. It's a movie every person born from probably 1980 to now grew up cherishing. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 07:47 AM) There was a lot done in Dexter last night to throw us off the idea that EJM is a dark passenger or figment of Colin Hanks imagination. I still think he is, but I thought it was very odd when I still think that he is a dark passenger, but I think he is more of a split personality a la Tyler Durden. That's where I now think it's going.

Just watched Dexter and Boardwalk Empire. Dexter was good, Boardwalk Empire was really good. Even though nobody acknowledged EJO, it's starting to look like he actually does exist. Of course, this can still be purposeful misleading by the writers. I'm really loving the addition of William Forsythe. And I'm left confused on where Van Alden's storyline is going. QUOTE (juddling @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 07:38 PM) Agreement Well.....in a totally not surprising move...Fox and Direct tv kissed and made up...... That's surprising.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 05:41 PM) A. I don't think a group of guys that have spent their adult lives in a dugout are going to be overwhelmed by the daunting decisions that happen during a baseball game. OMG...should we hit and run? I can't take it. Do we pull this pitcher? Maybe they can poll the audience. We'll make sure they don't f*** up. B. If they think Dunn simply had an off year, then they aren't doing their homework. I don't watch much NL ball, but I can't believe he was missing so many balls by a foot or more prior to last year. He's all kinds of f***ed up. Like, me riding my bike home on a Friday night f***ed up. So, they could have hired absolutely anybody who has played for a reasonable amount of time, and it's an OK move?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) I honestly do not know the difference nor the specific duties of a bench coach vs a 3B coach, at least not enough to make assumptions on who is more effective where. He has surrounded himself with a great managerial candidate in Mcewing and then picked a former catcher to be his bench coach who has 2 years of successful minor league manager experience in a very good organization. BTW, the "favorite" candidate for the Manager's position, Dave Martinez, has ZERO years experience managing at any level. I have said over and over again that experience can come in the form of managing in the minors and being a coach in the majors. Mark Parent would be a fine bench coach, if the manager were a veteran that could teach him. But when your manager has literally no managing experience at any level of professional baseball, then the bench coach should be someone with managing/coaching experience at the major league level.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 05:23 PM) 2/3 + 1/2 1.16 years. That more accurate? Less than Mark Parent. It says he spent the whole first year in a combination of managing in the minors and being a coach in the majors. The second year he was the minor league manager for 2/3 of the season, then was named the major league manager. Keep in mind, all of this happened because of just awful play by the team that seems to have forced the move. But that's still 1 2/3 years of experience before becoming the manager. And also over 30 years ago.
