  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:57 AM) Except of course that Manny Thome. So no, nothing like the same. Oh I'm sure the ticket sales difference is not likely to make up his full salary. A combination of that, and the Sox being more likely to stay in marginal contention, might. But it isn't purely a financial decision either or course. Just like a lot of people want the Sox to draft more high risk, high ceiling guys... I want the organization to keep fighting when there is a real chance (and when the team ahead of us isn't that good). Now, if in a couple weeks the team is 8 or 9 games out, then yeah, it is time to change gears. What do you consider a real chance? The last time someone posted their chances at the playoffs, wasn't it something like 10-15%? That's like the same chance you'd have of living playing Russian roulette with 5 bullets in the 6 chambers. That's a real chance? QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:00 AM) Tigers are so underrated on here. 12 games over .500 now, and recent acquisitions have improved the team. Getting to add Coke to bullpen was huge for them. They certainly are. They've gotten better since the trade deadline when they were already better than us.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:53 AM) I'm of the opinion that the cost of adding Thome (which isn't a concern) the rest of this year would outweigh the ticket sale increase the Sox would see by adding Thome. I doubt there's a lot of fans out there who are going to want to go to the game just to see Thome play right now. Hell, I'd be much more willing to go to a game or two down the stretch if I knew I'd see Viciedo play instead of Dunn or Thome. It won't do much for ticket sales at all. It's just a weak justification. I hope that Thome declines the trade. That'd be a nice, deserved slap in this franchise's face.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) I guess I don't see it as being the bad guy. KW has a job to do. He and Ozzie failed to do it properly when they let him go back then... so that means he should screw up again now, intentionally? Screw that. As long as the team has a shot, and as long as he helps bring crowds, the Sox should do it.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:48 AM) I'm actually pretty happy the Sox claimed Thome. The team is on the brink, chances of winning the division are dwindling fast, but it is not quite over yet. Besides, Thome being there will put more butts in the seats, which helps the team's payroll situation (partially offsetting his cost). And Thome has said he enjoyed his time with the Sox. So the only reason to hesitate, really, is the whole thing with getting Jim a shot at a ring. I can understand that, I'd love to see him get a ring, but it isn't exactly a known thing he'd go somewhere else and have a better shot anyway. And if Jim doesn't want to come here, he can just say no. Such a cop out. If this organization had any respect for the man, they would've allowed him to slip past us and see where he goes. Just because someone else might have been the bad guy, doesn't justify us being it.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) So we let a 21-year old phenom waste away at AAA for months when he could've made a difference in the standings, yet we're trying to acquire a 42-year old DH with a little over a month left in the season and our playoff hopes all but done? It's a joke. I will cherish the day that Ozzie and Kenny are gone. As for the waiver claim, this says it all:
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 07:28 AM) "I'd love to add Jim Thome back, to be honest with you," said Guillen, who was looking for a more versatile designated hitter that also could play the field when Thome left for Minnesota in 2010. "A lot of people think I don't want Jimmy. It was just at that time we didn't have any place for him. "But I have said day in and day out that Jimmy is one of my favorite guys in baseball. That's up to [general manger] Kenny [Williams]. I don't know if we're going to have five DHs. I don't expect him to be here, but if they want to bring him here, if you ask anybody wearing this uniform if they want Jim Thome back, everybody here would say yes. But that's not our department." Scott Merkin Sure, we have Adam Dunn but we don't actually need him anymore. Who are the other 5 DH's? Viciedo? Konerko? Flowers? Lillibridge? Quentin? The prevailing hypocrisy, double-speak and knife in the back routine with KW and Guillen this year and has been more interesting than the play in the field. Sometimes (such as last night's MLB "game"), you really think Ozzie is daring Reindsdorf and/or KW to fire him. Funny and sad, but true.
  7. It seems that Konerko DOES have a legitimate shot at 500. I didn't think it was possible.
  8. Haha, such a Sox move. I think they've done everything they possibly could this year to make me like them less and less.
  9. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) If he's ever called up. Haha, imagine if he doesn't even get a September call-up.
  10. Pierre is probably our best option when a man is in scoring position, minus Konerko.
  11. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) Hawk is clueless. That throw was too far to the right of the plate for Flowers to catch it and still tag Kendrick at home. Bingo. Hawk, just like Ozzie, much prefers veterans and will tear a rookie apart if he can to defend an older guy. They are also both morons.
  12. Another thing we never do is throw people out at home, even with how shallow that was hit. And it seems like we get thrown out a disproportionately high number of times. Of course Hawk puts the blame entirely on the rookie, completely leaving Rios' bad throw out.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) Buerhle has had troubles pitching around errors for years. LOL, I always said his ERA was good, but his RA would probably be 2 points higher.
  14. Ohman is a LOOGY, and a good one at that. Look up the definition of that, and you'll see that he's only good against lefties and that's all he's supposed to be used for. Our manager is the only one that doesn't see that.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 02:18 PM) It is hard to find anything "good" on him. Most of the works that get done on him center on the more bizarre occult stuff that is out there. I remember you posted something about another book a few months back. It was about obscure history or something along those lines. What was it again?
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:52 PM) Agreed. Tesla's life story is just amazing. Edison is pretty much the 19th century version of Bill Gates. Know of any good books about him? Because that is definitely something I could fly through. I once heard that Tesla was the closest thing the world has ever known to a true "mad scientist", and it really is about as close as you'll ever get.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Bonus points for the reference. If only Edison didn't use his influence to bury him, who knows how different the world would be right now. Off topic, but still incredibly interesting.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Anyone know why? jcrasnick Jerry Crasnick #BlueJays general manager Alex Anthopoulos is holding a press conference at 3:30 p.m. They've reacquired Alex Rios on the waiver wire
  19. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:46 PM) Not unless Gaddhafi unleashed some sort of earthquake causing secret weapon as his farewell act So that's where Tesla's diagrams went to!
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:42 PM) I was on a conference call with people in NJ and NYC, and they suddenly said the building is shaking, and all jumped off. At first I thought maybe some sort of attack. Sort of odd, a few hours earlier, there was a quake in southern Colorado that was the strongest that state has had in like 40 years. Coincidence? As hard as it is for me to believe that the world will end in 2012, it definitely seems like more and more crap like this is happening everyday
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) I dont think its a good idea to bash people who are optimistic for the rest of the season. Thats THEIR prerogative and frankly its nice to have positive people on this boards. That should not be a reason to personally attack them or their position IMO. Personally attack?
  22. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) yeah that was just an oversight I can use history to support my argument too. The tigers blowing a late season lead? The only time the Sox ever finish strong is when they're already eliminated, minus the one constant outlier of 2005. They choke away leads in August and September until they're out, then they have a nice week or two to finish the season.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:29 PM) I'm in Illinois, and at around 1, I was sitting at my desk chair, and I wondered if I was feeling an earthquake, because I was involuntarily moving in my chair. So I'm going to say I felt it and it wasn't a bad lunch. Poltergeist are the more likely cause.
