Weaver signs 5 yr/$85 million extension
Milkman delivers replied to fathom's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 09:30 AM) Mark was looking at least at 5 years on the open market. Honestly he probably could have gotten something similar to what Weaver just did at the very top end. Weaver left way more on the table. There is an outside chance he could have left 50% of the total on the table. Could he have pushed it to say 7 years at $25 mil per season? Especially if CC opted out and looked to go somewhere else. Not likely, but possible, especially if the Yanks didn't win the WS. That's roughly the number I had in mind. I can't say enough about how much I respect Weaver now. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 09:08 AM) I have posted a Drive trailer in the past, this is the newly released international trailer. I have really come to appreciate Gosling. He could have easily fallen into the Rom-Com group and increased his exposure, but he has been pretty selective in his choices. I like pretty much all of his work I agree on Gosling. He's actually pretty great. As to Drive, I usually hate those stupid racing/getaway movies, but I want to see this one based solely on the cast. It's definitely a great cast.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 04:41 AM) Mark Buehrle signing a 4/$56 deal that essentially ensured he would stay in Chicago (due to his salary increasing by $1 mill a year along with an additional year at $15 mill attached) was pretty incredible hometown discount considering he probably could have gotten 6 years or more money in general on the free agent market. He's not nearly as good as Weaver is, but I would say he is a top 50 pitcher in the game. I'd guess the difference with Buehrle is mainly the years. Weaver could have gotten more years and more money per year. -

Cmon guys, show some positivity! We still have one more inning to tie this up. Our negativity surely helps nothing, and it probably hurts our team. So turn those frowns upside down and get your rally caps on -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:03 PM) Sox getting worked over pretty good by Angels. This is another obvious thing that had to happen in this s*** season. We need to get that road record back to about .500 where it belongs to go with our lousy home record. Because f*** 'em. Sorry, just channeling Will Hunting. But seriously, I'm sure the team doesn't even give a s*** anymore, just like us. -

I can't believe how big a fool I was to doubt this team's ability to come back and take the division. I hope everyone got their playoff money in. Lol -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:23 PM) This would have been one of those nights you'd have had to bet against the Sox if you were a gambler. With the Angels smelling a race again with the Rangers and Weaver going...no way they were going to lose this one. Glad it was blacked out in Iowa and I had no way to actually see the dismal results. Iowa? Caulfield, where the hell are you right now? I swear you've been in Singapore and like China, Vietnam, or Indonesia in the last few months. -

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 10:04 PM) If PK cannot run any faster than that go on the DL he is not helping the team at all. Despite losing, yesterday's game still disproves this. I'm liking Flowers behind the plate more and more. -

Wow, half an hour into the game and not a single post about it. People have REALLY stopped caring. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 07:04 PM) Then again, if Nick Swisher or Alex Rios were to say that, we'd probably think their PR person or agent wrote it and that it was entirely disengenuous. Anybody can say it, but he walked the walk by signing a sweetheart deal. I can't recall anyone who has taken a deal THAT under market value, even our hero Konerko. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 04:52 PM) "If $85 (million) is not enough to take care of my family and other generations of families then I'm pretty stupid, but how much money do you really need in life?" Weaver said Tuesday. "I've never played this game for the money. I played it for the love and the competitive part of it. It just so happens that baseball's going to be taking care of me for the rest of my life." Jered Weaver just became one of my top 5 current players. I seriously might have to consider him #1. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 02:51 PM) Also... am I the only person who clicks on this thread almost excited to see who died? Then I find out most of the time I have no idea who it is so I need not bother tweeting or posting something about it? How f***ed up is that? Nope, I'm right there with you. Morbid, ain't it?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 12:10 PM) I'm enjoying the Mike/Jesse relationship a ton. I enjoy Mike, period. That guy is awesome and I really want him to survive the events of the show. My other favorite character is Hank. Not the smartass guy from the first two seasons, but the scared/brooding Hank of the more recent seasons.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) I'm still a bit baffled by this "Detroit is solid" talk. They have a total run differential on the season of +5. They're leading what is clearly the worst division in MLB. They've had a weak schedule, which is of course a function of playing the AL Central, and they have a unique ballpark that gives them a pretty large homefield advantage against weaker teams The Sox aren't going to catch them barring a miracle, but I can't see how people have decided a team that can't run away with this year's AL Central is a monster. There's quite a large difference between solid and monster. People are calling them solid, as you said. I'm not sure what argument you're even trying to make.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:48 AM) It's been good, but I think the show was at its best when Walt and Jesse had more scenes together, and Walt was a sympathetic character. Obviously as time goes on, Walt is morphing into a badass, and that's part of the character development, but I think the show has lost something because of it. Hopefully they can finish this season on a high note, and go out in style next year. They've still got like 7 episodes left this season. I am certain that some big things are coming, but I hope they don't save all of it for the last two or three episodes. Give us something kinda explosive in the next week or so.

You think Weaver will win the Cy Young over Verlander? -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Thats literally the subject of my letter to the ticket dept after they sent my postseason invoice. I hope a lot more season ticket holders are doing the same thing. Money talks.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:18 AM) I was offered free tickets 10 rows off the field for a date in September. I declined. This sucks. I went to 7 games in April/May, then realized this f***ing team blows. I wish management would have realized that and gone through with a blowup prior to the deadline. God damn KW, always down with the ship instead of hopping on a raft and manning the next one. This team is f***ed for a long time. I'm quite sure the management knew what they had. I think they thought they could fool the fans into believing they were "in contention" so that they could make up their losses. It seems to have worked, too, judging by the amount of gullible posters on this site alone.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) I'll give you some free ones so you can go and weep yourself to sleep after a loss. Hey, if you're giving out free tickets... I've gone to 3 games this year, which is outlandishly low for me. And those 3 I attended were free, which is the only way I'll go. I will not pay a dime towards ticket sales until Ozzie's gone.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:05 AM) Serious question...what roster spot does Thome get? It's been made abundantly clear that Dunn can't go on the DL if he's not hurt, and he can't go there right now anyway since we need someone to play 1b while Konerko is hobbled. Flowers and Lucy aren't going, that leaves Lillibridge, De Aza, and Vizquel. I guess I'd move Vizquel, but man, I'm not sure dumping any of those for a part time DH actually makes this a stronger roster. There is no chance they move Vizquel.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) This season should become a case study for business schools. The mismanagement/paralysis of gutlessness/failure to recognize sunk costs have undermined any chance to compete. A resistance to change that is stupefying. Having two top level managers at odds, but not establishing a clear hierarchy, has been the festering boil of this franchise for a few years. Thome makes no sense. I've never been more frustrated as a Sox fan than this year, and somehow it keeps getting worse. Wow, Stan. I always like your posts, but this one is so f***ing good. Honestly, one of the best posts I've seen this year and in my whole time here.
