  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) Yeah, so as usual, the actual geologist feels nothing. Sigh.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) Someone claimed Wandy Rodriguez... With his contract & the Astros need to save money, I wonder if they would just hand him over for free, Alex Rios style I think you have to.
  3. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:22 PM) Maybe you do. I don't buy into the idea that our past performance this year is indicative of what will happen for the next 6 weeks. It may provide us with an answer on what is likely, but not what will actually happen. You know what they say. Those who don't learn from history... And when you say two months, are you including the potential playoffs? Because there is only slightly more than a month left of the regular season. EDIT: Oops, you edited it lol
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) I would bet a lot of teams would take him as is. Heck the Tigers would give their collective left testicle to have him a set up man. That would have to be a huge testicle.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) See, now I'm excited, so I had to go check some maps. Are you sure that it was the 2.2? I think that was earlier in the day. A legitimate one actually just struck near D.C., Northern Virginia, 15 minutes ago, I'd guess that was actually what you felt. Current estimated magnitude is 5.9. I was about to ask if a 2.2 could even be considered a monster earthquake It seems like that would be more equivalent to a truck driving by your house.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) I'm sure they do. But with no reason to watch, why bother? Because I'm a fan of the team. I don't have to believe they're something special to watch them. Like I said, I watched all of 2007. I don't have to delude myself into thinking they're in competition to watch them.
  7. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) That's the one I mentioned earlier. Had no idea they had plaques out there. That's pretty cool. 410 feet doesn't seem too big.
  8. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) The math assumes a lot. The tigers might play 7 games under for all we know. And the Sox might continue what they've done all season or worse. I think being almost 5/6 of the way through the season, though, we have a pretty good idea of what's coming.
  9. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 01:02 PM) lol in the end I think there is about a 20 percent chance we claim him. I hope you see my rationale, as I'm pretty sure I understand yours. It comes down to you and others thinking that there still is a legitimate shot for the Sox to both win the division and go deep into the playoffs. Therefore, Thome would help in that. On the other hand, I don't think they have any chance at all to win a series in the playoffs and that they'd be extremely lucky to even make it there. Therefore, it would be useless to pick up Thome and it would screw him over as well.
  10. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) Yes Im sorry that I havent given up on the team yet....even though we still are in the hunt. I'm sorry that you haven't given up
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) It'll take a minor sports miracle for the Sox to win the division, I will agree with you there. However, looking at this race in a large generality like that is often deceiving. If the Sox go 4-2 against the Tigers in their final 6, that would mean the Tigers would have to play 3 games over .500 to win the division and the Sox would probably only have to play .600 ball...just guessing here. If the Sox take 5 of 6, then the Tigers have to play 5 games over .500 in the rest of their matchups to get to that elusive 87 win mark, and leaves the Sox probably having to win anywhere between 55-57.5% of their games. If somehow the Sox were to win all 6, then the Sox just have to play 1 game better than Detroit because they'd be in first place. Beyond any of that, if the Sox were to put a claim in on Thome and the Twins were to allow him to go freely, it would take a bat away from a divisional opponent that the Sox still have to face 6 more times this year. We are all aware, for several reasons, that Thome can change the outcome of a game with one swing of the bat. That likely makes Minnesota an easier opponent from this point forward as well (of course, this also affects Cleveland and Detroit too). So, yeah, you can look at the ridiculous records the teams would have to go, but at the end of the day, it's going to be head to head matchups that are going to determine the winner of the division. The two teams will probably split, leaving the Sox in a huge hole that they won't be able to climb out of, but, even as badly as I want to, I simply can't write this team off until they have finished up those divisional games. Well, I hope fathom was right about there being no way the Sox claim him.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:54 PM) To be fair we also have six games left against the Tigers which means our fate really is still up to us. These all just seem like cliches, to be honest.
  13. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:52 PM) Ah the I dont have anything to add to the argument mentality I've added a ton to this argument already. You're the one taking the cop out.
  14. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) All but...so yeah like I said Ah, the Cub fan mentality.
  15. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:45 PM) Good thing the math is all that counts at the end of the day And I just showed how the math all but declares the Tigers the winner.
  16. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:34 PM) lol ok, now you're just a hater and there is no point in trying to discuss this with you.. the Orioles are damn near 30 games out of first place, were not.. What I'm saying is that, yes, it would make their team better. But it doesn't matter because it's already over. For the Orioles, it is in stone that it is already over. For the Sox, it's over in all but the mathematical sense. The Tigers need to play one game over .500 just to get to 87 wins. The Sox need to win 2/3 of their games to get to that same number. It's just not going to happen.
  17. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:30 PM) Really? There is no benefit from claiming him? Would he not be an upgrade over a guy in our lineup hitting .169? He'd be an upgrade for the Orioles, too. But there's no point. We'd be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. If we acquired Thome, say, 2 months ago, it'd be a benefit. At this point, it's too little too late.
  18. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:26 PM) Yes, the fact that the division is s***ty is a perfect example of why we can still win it with so many games left against these same s***ty teams.. But we would do nothing in the playoffs. We're already basically out of it, let's not drag Thome to the depths with us.
  19. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) You know what if he doesnt like that we claimed him if we do then he can retire. Hell we may not even claim him and there really is no loss for the White Sox if we do. That has been my point this entire time. It does not benefit the Sox to claim him, so why do it? It only serves to screw him out of a chance to win a title.
  20. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:23 PM) The thought that we shouldn't take him because we might hurt his chances at a championship never crossed my mind because as I said, its too unpredictable to pick a champion right now. I'm not even certain which teams are going to be in the playoffs save a few. I thought the thread was made to discuss if the white sox would benefit from claiming him in the long and short term. You can certainly predict who won't win a championship, though. By the way, about 6 of the 8 playoff spots are already all but locked up.
  21. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:22 PM) Yawn.. you gave up on the seasons in April, so I don't really care what kind of witty green responses you have for me.. were 5.5 games out with 6 games against Detroit and the rest of em against KC/CLE/MIN so yes there is still a very real chance we can win the division if we can take care of business.. And I've been extremely right so far. The only reason we've remained "in" the race is because of the s***tiness of the division. And since then, the Tigers have gotten even better. I've also said since the beginning that the Sox could still win the division, due only to how bad it is, but that we would do absolutely nothing if we miraculously made the playoffs. I don't think we've gained on the Tigers in over a month or two. I see nothing changing.
  22. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) Then perhaps he shouldn't have sign with the Twins in the first place? The Twins seemed like a contender at the beginning of the year. Not sure what you even mean.
  23. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) Yeah playing for the Chicago White Sox who are playing for a playoff spot. Geez what a drag. As opposed to playing for the Yankees/Red Sox/Phillies/Brewers/Braves who are locks for the playoffs and actually have a chance to make it to the World Series. Yes, it is a drag in comparison.
  24. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) Seems like there has been only speculation about a variety of things . . . in this thread. Well, the title is "Should White Sox place a waiver claim on Jim Thome?" It's an entirely hypothetical situation, so what else would there be besides speculation?
  25. QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) I think its more s***ty to just let someone who could help your team out go to an arranged team so they can sit on the bench and get a WS title he didn't even earn just so he can have one.. that is whats s***ty.. He'd be a pinch hitter, and likely a good one. And I can't believe you actually would believe that's s***tier. But then again, I can't believe you actually think there's a chance the Sox still win this thing.
