QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) Did he say he was going to retire? There's been much speculation. It really doesn't even make sense for him to come back. He's already a part-time player having trouble staying healthy even at that, and now he has his 600 homers.
-
QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) Its about making the effort for that.. they already decided they were going for it when they didn't make any real moves at the deadline, so whats the point of b****ing about it now you might as well just hope they can sneak into the playoffs and see what happens.. Thome would help that push, I don't think hed be upset coming here Because you're basically screwing the classiest player in baseball (possibly in the entire history of the game) from getting his final shot at a title just because you're too stubborn to admit that you don't really have a chance.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) Yeah you arent Jim Thome or Jim Thome's wife. So really you know as much as anyone on here about his thoughts if we were to claim him. I bet he also wouldn't like to have his leg caught in a bear trap. I'll never get to know for sure, though, as I'm not him or his spouse.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:09 PM) Well if you truly believe we are still contenders for a WS title then so be it. I do not hold the same belief whatsoever. As well you shouldn't. It's just being willfully ignorant at this point.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:08 PM) I love when people guarantee how a player will feel when something happens. Do you sleep next to him at night? Hell for all you know he could be absolutely thrilled. YES! I GET TO GO BACK TO A .500 TEAM! It's OK, I never really wanted to win a title in my 21-year career.
-
QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) Exactly...its not like were out of contention. Haha, Jesus Tittyf***ing Christ. We're in contention the same way that the Cubs are in contention at the beginning of every single year. Sure, there's a mathematical chance, but there really isn't.
-
QUOTE (Papa Tru @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) And were trying to do that, and if he can help us in trying to do that there is nothing s***ty about that.. Ugh, the only people with that attitude are the very few fans of the Sox who still think we're in it. I guarantee even Thome would breathe a sigh of disappointment if he heard that the Sox claimed him, and probably his teammates on both the Twins and Sox.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:02 PM) Matt will be on the block this winter, which is exactly when we should think about having conversations. If they dont get that return then he is more valuable to us next season. Consequently, Chris Sale may be asked to start next season depending on the deals made in the offseason and we would need another good lefty in the pen for the late innings, and that guy is not Will Ohman. I didn't mean that we have to get rid of him during the waiver period. Just that it should be done sooner rather than later.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) It doesnt have to be fair, but still it would be a s***ty move to block Thome from going somewhere where he could win that title. One of the best guys in baseball history deserves that chance IMO. Exactly. I don't want to be the petty fat kid who gets eliminated first, takes his ball and goes home, ruining it for everyone else just because we suck.

Look, the fact of the matter is that claiming Thome is like chaining him to the deck of the Titanic. This ship is going down, and it's just plain unfair to him to bring him down with us. Let him try to find a lifeboat that will bring him to the promised land.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:48 AM) If you are all in then you are in the hunt for Thome. I would not be averse to that move and would welcome it. As far as the earlier post on Ozzie and KW looking like double idiots. Well, if it's the truth then wear that badge Ozzie adn KW. That move of the rotating DH using who we had was ridiculous. I can't believe anybody is still all in.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:45 AM) You really don't think any other team has a chance to beat the Phillies? Not many. The Phillies are just the perfect team for him, as they need the guy off of the bench and he's played there before. I don't think Boston has a spot for him, and I'm not sure about the Yankees.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:03 AM) I think you guys are infatuated with his 96 mph fastball. He's had an up and down year to be kind and I don't think the market for a 34 y.o. setup guy who is owed $12M over the next two years will be anywhere near what you think it will be. I don't often agree with you, but I agree that we need to get rid of Thornton ASAP. I don't want us to pull another Jenks, where many of us wanted him gone a couple of years earlier than he was let go. We failed to get any value for him when we could have gotten a nice return.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 07:17 AM) this is you, no? He's certainly someone with a vendetta against Reinsdorf. I don't believe I'm exaggerating when I say that 90% of his posts are in regards to JR, and in an extremely negative light. He reminds me of those old guys you might see at a bar who blame everything on the "Jew" owner.
-
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:35 AM) If people around baseball have as much respect for the man as they seem to, they'll let him get to the Phillies. That man, more than any other player in the game, deserves to be given that chance.

Without reading through the rest of the thread first, the answer is absolutely not. Jim Thome deserves a chance to get to another World Series. He would not have that chance here. It should be our job as a loyal former team to allow him to pass by us. If the Indians want to play the bad guy and pick him up, despite also having no chance at a title, then let them.

I just notice things like that. I certainly didn't mean anything by it. We've both been posting on the same site for 6 years (you for more), so you get to know posters and recognize their tendencies.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) That's an idea - Backup C, rotate at DH assuming Dunn still struggles against lefties, maybe cover 1B occasionally. Ozzie tends to not want to do that though, have his backup C play elsewhere in regular season play, in case AJ gets hurt. But really, that is such a rare occurance, I personally wouldn't care about maybe losing the DH for part of one game in a season. That also assumes that Ozzie is back next year. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 03:32 PM) The title of this thread reminds me of a Caulfield style post. -
I doubt Thome even wants to go back there. 1.) The constant boos when he's returned 2.) He will want a chance to win a World Series

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 03:05 PM) Can you show me another example of when I have posted such a thing? Besides Entourage this morning when Sloan was brought up first? Well, I went through a few pages just from this thread. Remember that this is something I've picked up over years of reading people's posts on this thread. I get a sense of things like this from many people, certainly not just you QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 08:03 AM) Nice boobs as well. I was shocked they showed the hot blond nude in the tube this week. Rejoiceful but shocked. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 28, 2011 -> 07:54 PM) Saw that earlier. Will Jessica Alba ever become unattractive? I see her like a Heather Locklear type. Sex as hell til she's 50. Jessica Beal is overrated IMO. QUOTE (Brian @ May 3, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Her older sister makes up for it. QUOTE (Brian @ May 5, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) I heard Alsion Brie's cleavage should get its own billing. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 13, 2011 -> 05:18 PM) This. Sandra winning was a shame. Parvati playing both idols that one tribal and not telling Russell was awesome. She looks good in a bikini as well.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 01:46 PM) Because Kenny "The Genius" Williams has saddled them with three incredibly bad contracts. So now Williams is a genius? Make up your mind.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 02:57 PM) No clue what you mean. I don't go searching for hot girls to draw me into shows. True Blood has steady nudity. I watch the show but am not into it like others and was just hoping to see her naked once. I am a guy after all. Teach me to be more sophisticated and cultured, sir. I'm obviously not that cultured, as I watch my fair share of porn. It just seems that whenever a TV show or movie is mentioned, you jump right to the ____ is so hot in it.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 22, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) I'm not suggesting Felix Patterson v 2.0, but I get the feeling that Castro will never fulfill expectations. *shrugs* I'll be taking in the game at Wrigley tonight. A combination of Felix Pie and Corey Patterson?
