Bears impending QB "controversy"?
White Sox Josh replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 09:20 AM) I think that the expectations for both quarterbacks are pretty silly and off base. We have two rookie quarterbacks basically, and both of them are unknown quantities in the NFL. We havent seen enough from Grossman to say that he should be the definitive starter, and Orton has taken his rookie lumps, and still has a 5-3 record. Its strange that so many people in Chicago have written off Orton already, yet the Critics love him and say he gets better every week. Does anyone remember how bad Peyton Manning was in his first season? 28 interceptions vs 26 TDs, 3739 yards, 56.7 completion percentage, 6.5 YPA(not to mention 3-13). At this point Ortons numbers are extremely similar to Mannings rookie year. At this point Orton has 7 TDs vs 9 INTs, 1186 yards, 54.2 CMP%, and a 5.4 YPA, Now dont misconstrue this, Orton is not going to be the next Peyton Manning. Im just trying to point out that rookie numbers should not be the death of Kyle Orton. He has done some really good things, and taken very big steps in his management of a game. I really think that the Bears need to ride this one out with Orton. Not only is it big in the development of Orton, it is big in the development of the Bears as a team. Grossman isnt going to just be ready because his ankle healed. He is going to have to adjust to the speed of the NFL again, no matter what anyone says. And to throw him in the middle of a playoff race really will do Grossman a disservice, its not fair to expect him to jump off the bench and take over. Plus, if the Bears somehow collapsed, it is Grossmans fault, and we are all kicking ourselves for not letting Orton finish the job he started. There are plenty of second guesses for us Bears fans right now, but I for one am hoping that those second guesses come next year in training camp. Oh yes, before I forget Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Bearsssssssss thank you. That is what i have been trying to say. Very rarely will a rookie have a great season. -
QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 01:33 AM) The two situations are like apples and oranges. not really actually: AJ had a tough time finding a team to play with and I suspect that if Frank doesn't come back to the Sox he might be in that same position.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 01:00 AM) lol, they may have interest in him but I can almost gaurantee he'd have no interest in them. After all those years of playing for the White Sox, I just don't see Frank going to a rival like that. Two Words: A.J. Pierzynski! Now I ain't saying it is going to happen, in fact I doubt it but who thought Pierzynski would be a White Sox.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 12:42 AM) Orton is a mediocre/adequate QB. He is a long ways from great, and I don't see him getting there either. did you see the TD Pass to Moose against Detroit. That looked like it was thrown by Dan Marino in his prime. Bet you Grossman couldn't of placed that ball where Orton did. -

Umm ok but what if Moose is double covered. Whatever #2 receiver that is out there is crap. And if he is double covered it is going to be very hard to throw to him. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) If the Bears had a really good QB, how many more receptions do you think Muhsin Muhammed would have? Never Said Orton was really good but he is ok right now. He will be a great QB sooner or later. I don't think Grossman is great though. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 12:20 AM) Booker was never a go to reciever though.... Muhsin is much better than Booker ever could be.... The best thing about Booker was he had those monster hands though lol he seemed to always own against Tampa. And Terrell would be a decent number 2 but he drops every single thing thrown to him and he got cut by us, the patriots, and is way low on the depth chart for the Broncos so I fail to see how you consider him a solid #2. because of the Receiving yards he put up and how much he made. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 11:57 PM) But then you'd see the likes of Muhammed getting a lot more receptions, especially with the play-action pass, and Grossman being able to throw a much better deep ball. but how do you know this. It's not like Grossman had a bunch of hacks as Receivers. I think Booker was a Pro Bowler once and Terrell was a solid #2 Receiver. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 11:56 PM) Quincy Carter lead his team to the playoffs. Did you see where that ended up? Trent Dilfer lead his team to the playoffs. Sense a pattern here? As for your diagnosis once again, you don't KNOW for 100% that the next time Grossman steps out onto a football field, he's going to do his ACL, or break his leg. Quincy Carter got cut by the Cowboys because he had cocaine problems. Trent Dilfer led his team to the Super Bowl. And the Ravens IMHO made a big mistake in not bringing him back. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 10:58 PM) What games are you watching?....... Orton isnt leading us anywhere he is managing the game. Look the bears would still be running the ball 65% of the time with Grossman in there anyways. This was built as a run first team. -

What is so special about Grossman? I mean I am serious. His stats are very average. So he has a strong arm. He can never stay healthy. If i am the coach it is Orton and if he gets hurt you go to Jeff Blake. Than you can have a QB competition if you want. I would say though that if Orton leads this team to the playoffs what is the point of a QB battle at Training Camp. -
Frank Thomas to the Indians? No free agents to the Sox? What kind of Crack is the guy doing. ESPN should have drug tests from now on.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 01:01 PM) Good for the Card fans! Good for Rooney! I am happy that it was reported that the Sox want an ex-player to step in. That means it WON'T be North. I actually kind of (slightly) like North in small doses, but I could NOT imagine him calling a game. Stoney? He had 2 stints with the Sox i think? -

If it was up to me the next time Grossman steps foot on the field will be in 06. You go with Orton and if he is injured Jeff Blake is your QB. You can't trust Grossman to stay healthy right now. -
I met a lot of Cardinals at a hotel that i was staying at a couple of years ago. THey stayed at the same hotel that i did. I met these players: Edgar Renteria: Doesn't speak much English but seemed like a nice guy. J.D. Drew: Very Nice guy. Very personable. Mark McGwire: Another nice guy. Didn't sign autographs but was nice to all the fans. Tony LaRussa: Great guy. Met him in the elevator as i rode the same one down to the lobby that he was in. Dave Duncan: Was with LaRussa Other players I have met: Ray King: Really cool guy. Saw him as he was getting into a cab when he was with the Braves. Gary Sheffield: A real Prick Sox players I have met: Joe Borchard: Really nice guy. I met him while i was on the escalator at Sox Fest. Hope he does well elsewhere. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) He's talking about his Superbowl game. Not any of this media s*** he's gone through. You're going to have a hell of a time convincing anyone on here that TO's Superbowl was not gutsy. oh i agree with you. I think it was more gutsy than Schilling but isn't Sportsmen of the year supposed to count for some of the off the field stuff you do. I mean after the s*** he did last week. -
QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) Lyle has a great speaking voice.... and he played the game. Side note.. John & family moved into their new pad in the western burb's over the weekend.. interesting. I assume you are talking about Rooney.

QUOTE(BigEdWalsh @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 04:02 PM) Jack Nicholson as Bobby Dupea in Five Easy Pieces: The movie's most famous scene takes place in a roadside diner, where Bobby tries to get a waitress to bring him toast with his breakfast (it's not on the menu). Despite appeals to logic and common sense, the waitress adamantly sticks to the rules of the restaurant, so Bobby comes up with a plan of his own: Bobby: I'd like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee. Waitress: A #2, chicken sal san. Hold the butter, the lettuce, the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else? Bobby: Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules. Waitress: You want me to hold the chicken, huh? Bobby: I want you to hold it between your knees. I saw that movie and I was very dissapointed. Expected a lot out of that movie.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 12:11 PM) A betting site that I frequent has the Bears favored by 12 1/2 points. The Orton factor means that this game is damn near sure money if you bet on the 49ers minus the points. why are you so anti-orton.
