Now, as the baseball axiom goes, good pitching beats good hitting. And lucky for us, we have three pretty damn good pitchers right now. Come postseason time, we should be in pretty good shape in that department. But, the axiom is GOOD pitching beats GOOD hitting. Well, I hate to say it, but we don't have good hitting. We have average hitting. Come playoff time, all you face is good pitching. So can you imagine what good pitching is going to do to us? And as evidenced by what we do against good pitching (Prior) and average pitching (Dessens) I think we are in serious trouble. I really don't see a way, with the lineup as it is now, we are going to score more than 3 runs in any postseason game. Let's say we play the Angels in the first round. That means we get Bartolo twice. We are more than likely going to score two runs or less in those games. The same can be said for the Yankees (Unit) or the Red Sox (Schilling). I know you all love this team and we have the best record and all that, but come postseason time, I think our bats are going to be in serious trouble. If we have to fight to score runs against Scott Elarton, what are we going to do when matched up with Bartolo Colon? And sadly, I don't see how we're going to get much better offensively. If things don't change, we are ripe for a first-round exit.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 06:07 PM) I would guess it was one of the slowest group of guys in MLB history to bat consecutively. lol wouldn't it be great if they kept track of that sort of thing? white sox 4-9 hitters, June 25, 2005, avg. 40 speed 6.6* yankees 4-9 hitters, April 16, 1931, avg. 40 speed 6.5 * new major league record

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 06:03 PM) If not for Rowand's clutch hitting this year, I would have been really disappointed in his offensive prodcution. Like I've said all year and earlier in this thread, he should never be hitting 3rd against rhp. Against lhp, that's fine. However, he's nowhere near good enough against rhp to be in the 3rd spot. totally agree. he's not a no. 3 hitter. your no. 3 guy should be your best hitter in the lineup. if frank's not going to be there, i'd have paulie there.

ryan "cum" dempster. least scary closer in baseball.

i'm in the mood for a rally. at least get the tying run to the plate for me.

i'm at work, watching on mlb.com, and roberto novoa looks like mike tyson in a cubs hat in his pic. at least that's some sort of joy i can take from this game.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:29 PM) This game reminded me of some of those @ Tampa games we had earlier this year where we had warning track power is some crucial spots, as well as some hard hits balls at people. That H'worth catch was the turning point in this game, and even more important than the grand slam. you're gonna have those games now and again. you just can't let them start snowballing is all. btw, i don't know what goes on out there, but back east, i keep hearing about how the white sox are the mariners of a few years ago when they won all those games and got bounced in the first round. you guys catching that crap in the midwest?
-
btw, i'm an idiot. i meant politte in the 8th and hermanson in the 9th. i forgot what side of chicago we're on today.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:18 PM) I have no clue why Ozzie does some of the things he does. However, as long as we continue to have a great record, there's not a chance in HELL that he changes the way he does things. that's all well and good, but if hermanson gets knocked around in his next appearance and it happens to be a one-run game, don't say i didn't warn you.
-
damn it. this one's over. never should have let contreras start the inning. then again, this is all moot if we don't score again.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:14 PM) Ozzie has been quoted recently as saying Hermanson would only be used in save situations for the time being. He wants to keep Hermanson fresh for the second half of the season. using a guy twice in a week wouldn't be overworking him. i'm all for keeping guys fresh, so why doesn't take that same tact with the starters?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) I'd rather keep Hermanson fresh for tomorrow's game for a save opportunity. I see no problem with using Shingo in a game like this and try to see if he can continue his solid stretch. hermanson hasn't pitched since MONDAY. he could use an inning today, and still have plenty left for tomorrow if needed. the lack of work is going to hurt when real save chances come up.
