2008 General Election Discussion Thread

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 11:12 AM) I wonder how you are going to stop the Cubans who are slant drilling 60 miles off the coast of Florida. The Bad American companies are shutdown by the gov, however the Cubans and their friends can drill the same waters and in some cases, drill on a slant to get our oil. I guess the Hurricanes only wipe out the American Oil Rigs, and the Cuban oil rigs are the picture of safety I am sure. So you're using the "if they do it we should do it too" argument? Why not be the innovators and leaders in alternative fuels? Why keeping clasping to an outdated and limited resource? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) I already live in a town with a gigantic garbage dump, a coal cooling tower, and not too far away from steel mills and the 3rd largest refinary in the country. I don't see much of a difference to be honest. In reality its that NIMBY attitude that has been as much of a factor in energy prices in this country versus anything other than demand. Everyone wants more of energy, until it involves them. Just like people want the high classes to pay more taxes, until that includes them... then they somehow are over taxed. Personally I wouldn't mind solar panel or wind turbine farms nearby. Oil is not sustainable and produces greenhouse gases. But as an ultra liberal everyone already knows how I feel so I'll just shut up on this topic. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 10:18 AM) FL aside, I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to explore for oil if it's here in the country assuming it won't do significant damage to the environment or populated areas. But even still, we need to just stop thinking about oil, period. Even if we did start drilling here, and in Alaska etc. that doesn't really help because oil is not the future. I was listening to Giuliani talk this morning and I swear you could replace "oil" with the word "crack" and it sounded the same. That's my whole issue with it. Seems like such a short-sighted option. There needs to be way more emphasis on renewable/alternative energy. I personally feel there are more cons than pros with additional oil exploration. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 09:58 AM) Why don't they want to allow the drilling? I honestly don't know. Florida relies heavily on tourism. Oil rigs and potential oils spills would not fare well on its many beaches. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 18, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) you beat me to it. i just saw those numbers. I'd figure Obama's Florida numbers will rise a bit in the short term because of the offshore drilling talk. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 07:55 PM) Dodger announcers said their visit to the Tiger clubhouse today revealed that they were "unimpressed" with the White Sox. How could they have been impressed after the mediocre effort we gave in Detroit? -
I loved watching MTP each Sunday morning. I'll definitely miss him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) Funny in 2004 the Democrats all told me that chaging your mind was a good thing, and it meant you were open to new lines of thought... And Republicans told me that it was a sign of weakness.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 08:30 AM) I don't think this Laker team is weak though. I think they're actually a championship-caliber team, and I thought they were actually better than the Celtics. Gasol isn't exactly a nobody either, acquiring him freed up that offense in a big way. Also I can't think of any weak teams that have made the Finals recently. I mean, maybe the Pistons would fit that definition, but they are pretty much a solid ensemble without a superstar driving them and they're the exception and not the rule. There is no superstar who can single-handedly take his team to the championship, not Kobe, not LeBron, not even Jordan. I'd compare this Laker team to last year's Cavs. One superstar and some inconsistent role players with little experience in championship situations.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 06:56 PM) Like I said a few pages back...McCain is really going to wind up in a bit of trouble because of the media's constant adoration of him...he's constantly, over and over again, been booked on shows over and over again...and within the last few years has had a chance to answer questions on every issue probably a dozen times, over and over again, to the point where you can stick just about every clip together and wind up with things that contradict. Over and over again. And here's another perfect example. He might blow Kerry away in the flip-flop contest with all the years of sound bites they have on him.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 13, 2008 -> 09:09 AM) I think the point is that Shaq had a lot to do with those championships than Kobe did, and Kobe's legacy should reflect that, but it's not, and being compared to Jordan's instead. Could you imagine if, say, the Cavs right now had Shaq in his prime? They'd be unstoppable. Or with the T-Wolves when Garnett was there? Hell, the fading Shaq even brought a championship to not-really-that-good Miami (although obviously with the help of the refs calling fouls on people who breathed too hard near Wade). But we also saw that Jordan required a mature Pippen to finally get over the hump. This Laker team is pretty weak and they still made it to the finals. We never saw Michael take a weak Bulls team to the finals. They had a mature team with Pippen and Grant (Rodman later).

QUOTE (3E8 @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 10:03 PM) Check out Wale's 'Mixtape About Nothing'. Yes, a hip-hop mixtape inspired by Seinfeld. Sounds super-gimmicky, but I'm really digging it. Wale has nice flow. The opening track has "What's the deal with.." verses a la Jerry's act. The other tracks have clips and themes from the show Listen/Free Download Thanks for the heads up. I'm enjoying it so far.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 11:01 PM) Kobe has to win a bunch of rings without a dominant big man as well. This Laker team is not even remotely close to being as well-rounded as any of the 6 Bulls championship teams.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) From bicycleretailer.com Wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall at this event. I'd love to hear Obama's ideas on this matter. Found this on Obama's website: Didn't seem like much bicycling discussion was involved...
