  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 11:18 AM) Why is a snow day called based on reasonable weather forecasts the night before causing you to flip your s*** so much? Because he was a brave soul who drove on LSD during snow storm 2011. If he can do that, these kids should all be in school!
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 11:07 AM) Not really, I actually got a good education. While, I admit, as a kid I would have loved for school to be canceled every day, or every time a few inches of snow fell, as an adult I realize that I'm better off that it wasn't. Also, when I was a kid, being that in the early 80's, we didn't have front wheel drive, or snow plows going down every city street all hours of the day/night, either. Yet somehow we made it alive. Like I said, wussification. Go buy yourself a trophy for being alive, not because you earned one. You're better off as an adult because you didn't have an extra snow day or two as a 2nd grader? LMAO. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 11:10 AM) Alot of it is the child care issue. The are lot more dual income families now then "back then." The stay at home parent is not the norm anymore so there needs to be more planning otherwise they will all complain to the school about not being able to get childcare in time. That being said cancelling school before the snow even starts is ridiculous. We found out at 6pm last night and snow did not start falling here until 8am. There still isn't much on the roads and the school day is about 1/2 over. My main point is #1. Sometimes you are going to make a call and it won't turn up as bad as originally though. But it's better to have a sure-fire plan in place, let people have the time to figure it out, then push right up against a deadline of sorts. The blizzard 2 years ago...companies were closing down the day before just to be safe. You didn't know quite how ridiculous it would be when you woke up, but it was a lot easier to plan around it and just call everything off. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 11:11 AM) I gonna go with it mainly being about the ISAT testing and how bad that'd f*** the scheduling up compared to playing it safe for a day. eta: when I went to bed last night, the snow was still anticipated to start around 3am and get worse throughout the morning. If you're reasonably anticipating have issues with late buses, absent children or getting everyone home without an early dismissal, it's much more convenient for everyone to call it the night before so arrangements can be made. ISAT would make a lot of sense. And yeah, it was supposed to snow overnight.
  3. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 11:03 AM) Hit yourself with a stick. Someone's really upset they didn't have enough snow days as a kid.
  4. So it has to be life-threatening to cancel school. OK.
  5. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 5, 2013 -> 08:17 AM) See the "wussification of America thread" in the Buster for your answer. When I was a kid, it had to actually, you know snow ... about 10+ inches for schools to be closed. In my ENTIRE K-8 "career", school was canceled 2 times because of snow. Today, the sheer possibility of snow cancels school...for a measly 6 inches...or 3 now. Ridiculous. And don't give me that, "when I was a kid" crap either...this isn't some absurd example of having to walk uphill (somehow), both ways in a blizzard. This is schools being canceled before snow even begins falling, despite it only being 6 measly inches. In general, we're a lot more worried about kid's safety/transportation issues, which is always a positive. Buses don't exactly cruise through the snow. It's also a lot easier to make a call and cancel it based on forecast and allow families to plan. If the kids are going to be home, you may need to stay home from work, find a babysitter, etc. It's a lot easier to do that night before or really early in the morning instead of playing chicken with them figuring out whether to cancel or not. It's also not too easy to have them get into school, have them call it an early dismissal day, and you either need to pick them up from school, or again, make arrangements for someone to be home for them after their long bus ride home. It's snowing right now, apparently places will get 4-8 inches and the worst part will be in the afternoon for the ride home. I don't really understand how canceling is such a "wussification" issue.
  6. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 09:37 PM) I've heard him say several times that his index is based on how teams are playing now. Maybe you gotta listen a little better! The fact it changes every week and sometimes drastically, should tell you something! ;-) I get what he bases it off of, I even said it in my post. I just don't understand the point of it. All he does it take the teams that won that week and they go to the top. He could just call it the "teams who won this week index."
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down LOL detained for 3 hours? A quick question and a google search would have solved it in about 2 minutes.
  8. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 08:10 PM) Wisconsin had been doing well until they decided to basically destroy their season losing to Purdue. The problem with his index is like he says its about what teams are playing good that day. And any system built on what have you done for me lately is bound to have inconsistency. I've never understood the point of it considering that's what he uses to judge it. OK, Illinois beats Indiana, they are clearly #1 that day. Big deal. He should just say "this is my power rankings...not necessarily based on standings, but how good I think these teams are and how well I could see them doing in the tournament." Or something to that effect.
  9. You sure comment on them a lot for not being a listener. The jokes aren't exactly inside, either.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) Carcillo is the worst forward on the team, and it's not even close. The guy is clueless out there, and I'm still pissed they originally signed him, and that they for some reason keep bringing him back. Plus you can tell he's not 100%. He just looks so slow out there. I know he's not the fastest guy to begin with, but you can tell he's slower than usual. Stop. Playing. On. Top. Line.
  11. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Wasn't clear in my initial post. I meant avoiding the 8/9 game in the Big Ten Tournament. You are correct that the committee tries to prevent teams in the same conference from meeting before the Sweet 16. Got it. I thought you had fast-forwarded to NCAA seeds. If we play IU, so be it - it's a gravy game at that point, so the worst that can happen is we lose as expected.
  12. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 4, 2013 -> 09:47 AM) I think Iowa probably needs 4 more wins to get in the tournament. Beat Illinois and Nebraska should make them the 7 seed (tiebreaker over Illinois by virtue of one head to head). Beat Northwestern or Nebraska Thursday and then whoever is the two seed on Friday and that might do it with a very weak bubble. Hopfully Illinois wins on Tuesday and avoids the 8/9 game. I want no part of playing Indiana again this year... Doesn't the committee make every effort to separate teams from the same conference until the sweet 16? I wouldn't see us as the 8/9 against Indiana considering they'll likely be the only #1 seed from the Big Ten.
  13. QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 10:25 PM) When flipping through the channel guide yesterday, I saw that the Big Ten Network had put on Monday's schedule a B1G Classic episode of today's Michigan-Michigan State game. What. They show replays regardless. You can find almost any game from the week on there labeled as B1G Classic. It's an odd name, should just say B1G Replay or something.
  14. QUOTE (TomSeaverFan @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 04:26 PM) Is this Blackhawk team the best potentially in NHL history? I'll let you know in July. Talent-wise they certainly aren't.
  15. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) Why do people do the polar plunge? Why do people run on ice?
  16. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) The Dakich Index is his opinion of how teams are playing now and it changes weekly. It doesn't reflect season accomplishments. It's basically a floating list of the last 3-5 games. Yeah, Illinois was like 3 last Sunday...so it's a weird index. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 3, 2013 -> 01:37 PM) Wisconsin really screwing themselves today. Wow, that's a really bad loss. WTF?
  17. QUOTE (zenryan @ Mar 2, 2013 -> 07:27 PM) Mildly entertaining hearing Vitale say how Duke is a different team with Ryan Kelly back. Never mind the fact that if Kelly just puts up his average, Miami wins by 10+ points in Cameron. So Duke better hope Kelly goes off for close to 40 every night if they have hopes of a title this year. Well...they ARE a different team with Ryan Kelly, regardless of him putting up 3 or 36 tonight.
  18. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 2, 2013 -> 09:12 PM) Boom dawgs win. Mo state on Thursday. Worked out perfect! 10 seed, just how you drew it up.
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 2, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) Penn State's good. Wow.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 28, 2013 -> 06:50 AM) When I used to drive down to school in Champaign, I would always try to keep it in the 70-72 range, never got stopped. Same here, never an issue. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 28, 2013 -> 08:17 AM) Can't wait to be extra paranoid on my trip to champaign tomorrow. I'm going to be checking my rearview mirror for an f16 gunning me down for going 74. Also, I'm too old for unofficial. Ha, good luck with that.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 10:16 PM) He's a gifted son of a beep. Best part of it, which only about 1% of people found relevant? He burned Aucoin.
  22. Love B&B, but it's not for everyone. But, when they talk sports, they can talk it at a higher level than anyone else in town. But let me just say that some of the best parts of the show is when they aren't talking sports at all, and just talking about random stuff. Sometimes those segments are just epic.
  23. QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 05:08 PM) Depending on who they draw and who's in their bracket, I think they could get farther if they get hot. Problem is when we end up on the 8/9 line, we have to beat a 1 seed to do it. I'd give it about a 20% chance if we can win the first game, which will be a toss up, too. Obviously we can beat that caliber of team, I just don't think it's very likely.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 1, 2013 -> 01:15 PM) Hey I actually like B&B, I listen to them every day. But to act like they give any call-in dissenting opinion a chance is completely disengenuous. Bernstein fell in love with himself over the past 4 years. Bernstein has been in love with himself for however long he's been on, I wouldn't limit it to 4 years. They don't do it in a second. But you can usually tell pretty early if the guy has a dumb opinion, once he's given it, they counter it. There aren't many times where I say "that guy was right/had a good point, they really should have heard him out." They put good callers on too, but idiots is what makes the show "sell" better. 5 hours of "great point guys I agree with you" doesn't do a lot, unfortunately.
