Yes, he picked Duke for the education. That's exactly it. I know you are trying to hang on to superstars being "student-athletes," but they aren't. They are there for one purpose, like it or not. He'll be there for a year, and class will just get in the way of his time to hone his craft. Let's not pretend he's there for anything different. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 08:46 AM) They really need to condense teams or do something real to fix this thing. When you lose two season in a rather short period of time something major is broken. This isn't a percentage point difference in revenue sharing. Actually...it is, among other things. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 21, 2012 -> 07:26 AM) I'm off work today and awake before 7 AM, what the f***? I guess I am getting old. So maybe the world is actually coming to an end...

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 06:24 PM) Best friend just got engaged, so that's kind of cool. True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego...

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 03:43 PM) They need to just get there already. Yup, I'm there. As much as no season would suck, it would get rid of my ever-so-small optimism that they'll figure it out and we can have hockey. Just f***ing rip the band-aid off and let me stop worrying about it every day. -

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) Our players are way too nice when they sack QB's. I saw Peppers yesterday sack Rodgers, wrap him up, take him down and then pat him on the back and exchange some friendly words. WTF is that s***? When other teams sack our QB, they go for his head or his legs, there's almost none of this "wrapping up then friendly banter" type ish you see out of our guys. Just weak sauce. If ever there was a time to find some meanness in you, its in a Bears/Packers game Meatball Bears fan on line 3. Next time use all caps for emphasis.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) Jay Bilas sez Indiana is not a top 25 team. Weird. Where'd he say that at? I usually love Bilas' insights and opinions but that's silly. -

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 16, 2012 -> 06:38 PM) Apparently we can't shoot well vs these lesser teams. Just pull out the W. We're just saving all the makes for this Saturday...right? Pretty ugly, but at least they put it together down the stretch. What'd we end up with, 35 turnovers? -

Absolutely pathetic that they lost after it got to OT. Wonder what happens when they play an actual road game. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2012 -> 10:17 AM) That is definitely the rub. I think if you really have a fear of someone armed breaking into your home, you really need to move. That would be the best way to protect your family. People break into homes in good neighborhoods in Chicago, nice suburbs, etc. Unless you live on a farm 40 miles from civilization, I'm not quite sure where you can be safe.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 15, 2012 -> 09:21 AM) This is the part that is unacceptable to me. There is no reason for a child to be able to access a gun. I have a number of rifles and shotguns. We go shooting and hunting on a regular basis. The guns are never out of the safe at home. I have the key in a spot they cannot find let alone reach. You read about this thing happening so often and it's the parent's fault for not teaching the children properly and not securing them. I agree with this. Here's the thing, if you actually need to defend yourself, you need quick access to that gun. I don't know how people can have quick access but also have it locked away so well that no one else can get to it.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:50 PM) I am desensitized, I deal with bad things all the time. Part of reflection is asking what could have be done differently. I just do not like defeatest attitudes. If we as a society believe that less guns would improve society, then 300 million, 100 billion or 1 billion trillion guns should not deter us from trying to reach that goal. But that is the first step in this discussion, do we really want to give up guns? I am willing to. I would rather die myself, than have a weapon I owned be involved in the death of someone else. I am probably not in the majority, I recognize this. But that is where the discussion really needs to start. How many of us would be okay with destroying all civilian guns tomorrow. In my opinion the answer is not the majority. So until then we are stuck with what we have. Which is why in my opinion the best solution is to allow states, cities, etc to create their own rules. If citizens of Chicago are okay with only criminals having guns and are fine with that risk, so be it. If Texas wants to allow rocket launchers, so be it. I do not believe I can change the mind of everyone in America, but I do believe that as American's we should have the right to determine whether we can collectively agree that we do not need to have guns to survive. Good post here. I compare this to the steroid era in baseball. Everyone else is using...do it or fall behind. Everyone else has guns, you need one to be safe (not me, but that's a mentality). And it just multiplies. If you knew no one around you had a gun, there wouldn't be a great need to have one. It's getting to the point where it's almost Darwinism to some. Too many guns and too many people out there breaking the law, stealing, harming others, etc., so adapt and survive.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:58 PM) Then its pretty bad that they let him in the school if his mom wasnt even there... I guess well have to wait and see. To many variables. I already came up with a way he could get in if his mom wasnt there "Hey my mom said I should come and pick some things up from her classroom". Or "hey see this gun? Let me in." If he wanted in, he'd get in, it's not a building made for security purposes. Heck, he could have killed the person protecting the buzzer and let himself in.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) No suspension for Quinton Dial for his above the shoulders, helmet to helmet hit on Georgia QB Aaron Murray. So, in the NFL this costs a player probably at least 15K. In college, no flag is thrown, and no penalty levied by the conference. Makes total sense. That's the exact bulls*** hit that needs to be out of football at every level. Everyone wants free shots. A lot of these concussion issues could be cleaned up if guys had more respect for each other. -
I don't think anyone's saying guns are the problem that causes this. We know it's the person. So to use that as a counter-argument is silly. Guns bring things from a possible level 1 or 2 to a 10, and make it a whole hell of a lot easier to accomplish things. Even an argument on the street or at a bar. Instead of yelling, fighting, whatever, hey look, I have a gun, here's an easy way to end it. Can't help but think of the Ben Wilson story. Completely escalated by a gun being in play.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) It really compounds this situation. Earlier today I bought a 7 game plan for me and my kids as a Christmas gift, I felt really good about things and then this really just sucks the life right out of you. My God, this time of the year is incredibly special for young children and families, parents and schools feel a renowned sense of innocence at this time of the year. As I got older Christmas spirit passes but with three young kids, my Christmas spirit is as great as it even was. Stuff like this though makes you think about what kind of world you are bringing these kids into. God help them all. Good post. Someone just talked about how most of these families' homes probably have holiday stuff up, and presents under the tree for children that will never come home.

27 is the "new and preliminary" number. At least 18 children. He's been described as "not a stranger to the school."
