The 2007 Big Ten/ACC Challenge
IlliniKrush replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I'll throw this in here since there is no bball thread, and most big ten fans will see it here: Per Tupper's blog: "Three, the Big Ten Conference hasn’t announced it yet, but the league will be going to an 18-game men’s basketball schedule (expanding from 16 games). That means each school will have only one opponent it plays once at home, and only one opponent it plays once on the road. That’s nearly a full round robin. The question: When does Big Ten play begin, in late December or in January as it does now? If it starts in January, it likely means the end of the “bye” week. It also means two less non-conference games." -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) So, if Pie works for the Cubs while Soriano is down, I would no problem taking Murton off the Cubs hands, and stick him in LF. Those splits vs. LHP are sexy. I wouldn't either, though I think they are grooming him to play RF as Soriano could perhaps move to LF eventually. Don't know if they'd give him up.

These 2 late signings really make me feel better about this class. Looks like Bruce has some decent talent to work with. It will be interesting to see the kind of minutes they get next year.

The thing i like about indoor is that missed shots don't end up out of bounds...and well, there is no out of bounds, really, so it keeps the game moving. It's just more like hockey/basketball to me. Same with indoor soccer, i always preferred that to outdoor when i played. -

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 11:00 PM) Should have sent a note canceling classes "due to an incident, details to be released later, remain indoors." But its still not all that easy to contact 30000+ people. Plenty of people don't check their emails or are away from their computers, especially during those times of day. Many students and professors would have carried on their day as usual and headed to class. And the population is still spread out pretty far, at least here. Campus itself is several square miles, and the size of area where most students live is pretty big. You're probably talking a 5 mile radius from the center of campus. That's a huge area. A note would have done serious damage, I believe. Sure not everyone checks their emails, but I think the vast majority of students do when they wake up, before they had to class. Maybe i'm wrong. Furthermore, I think word of mouth, on a college campus, has the power to reach many of these people who otherwise wouldn't get the message. UIUC is big, but it's not unreachable. A vast majority of the students live between the 6 pack and springfield and 1st and wright in that huge block. Word could travel pretty fast with the help of email or other notification systems, as people have mentioned. I am not familiar with VT, and obviously campuses across the nation are quite different. Nothing would have worked perfectly, but I think it could have helped in certain instances. It's hard to think about a possible fact that some of the people who died were attending their first class of the day after this first shooting occured. If I were a parent, I'd sure be looking for answers. Hell if I was a student that survived in this situation, I'd be wondering why I was sitting in a class room at that point. This will likely change the way colleges handle situations, and things may be overblown here or there, but I don't see a huge downside to taking proper (if not extreme, if that's how you want to look at it) caution. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) Damn that was a fantastic idea. The only problem is that they are only building a temporary stadium, as a permanent one would make Soldier field and many others in the city worthless for parts of the year. Whose money does that subtract from? They should have put a retractable roof on soldier field in the first place. Good point, but you'd bring in a boatload of money hosting super bowls, ff's, and college bowls. You would have to think something could be worked out, perhaps. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) Let's put this into perspective regarding lock downs etc. With staff, the campus population is approximately the size of Highland Park, Niles, Northbrook, or Oak Forest. Do you really expect the police to lock down those cities if they come upon what looks to be a domestic murder? Can you imagine the reaction from local businesses? IMO, you are comparing apples and oranges. Canceling classes and keeping kids in dorms/apts/wherever isn't the same as closing local businesses or whatever else you want to do. Not to mention that the population, while as big, isn't as spread out as any of those listed towns, making it much easier to contact all involved. Hindsight is 20/20, but there have been school shootings all over the place in recent years. When 2 or more people are murdered in a dorm room and the gunman isn't caught, that means someone, likely a college student IMO, is out there with a gun and has the potential to harm others. Might as well be careful in this situation. If I were a student I would have expected to wake up to an email telling me there was a murder in a local dorm, we have no idea where this guy with a gun is nor what he might want to accomplish, so don't bother going to class and stay where you are. Something that simple. If nothing else happens, you missed a day of classes. If not, well... -

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 09:21 PM) The more I think about, the more I agree with the course of action that the school took. Was there any reason for them to believe that the first incident was anything but an isolated case? Why would they shut down this whole campus and incite this big panic before they could figure out the details of the case? U of I doesn't shut down every time there's an armed robbery (and there was 5 just the other weekend). A city doesn't shut down and alert every one within minutes or even hours every time a murder happens. Given the size of the school, its much like its own city. 5 armed robberies? What places? Getting back on topic, until you have a gunman and you maybe understand the motive, you need to do something besides keep people in the dark. People can say they don't want people running around outside, but walking around outside and entering classes is putting people in harms way. They'll take every single precaution after the 2nd shooting, including arresting people of the media, apparently, and locking people in class rooms for 3 hours, but after a shooting in a dorm and you have no idea who did it, business as usual? I can't see how they were flawless here. -

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Apr 16, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) I really think they chould build an indoor stadium to be used for late season football, and early/late season baseball by both tthe cubs and Sox, Final Fours and the Superbowl. Hell, shot for a BCS game. s***, this ain't a bad idea, specifically the FF and Bowls part. If they are going to have to build a stadium anyway, might as well kill 2+ birds with one stone, if at all possible. Having FF's, super bowls, and college bowls here would be sweet. -

Pens/Sens game 2 most entertaining game of the playoffs so far. Crosby gets the game winner, Pens win 4-3. Fleury was remarkable late.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 14, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) No, no, I think your approach is far more logical. Let us psychoanalyze every move he makes during the course of the season, and pay no attention to the win totals, or his ring finger. You are most right. This is a very baseball savvy approach. But that's what we can all see with our own eyes. And those things do contribute heavily to wins and losses - what they are getting paid to do. Again, if you want to use the pure 'ring' argument, Brenly has one. I think the guy sucked during that year he won it and throughout those playoffs, but he has one. Now, if you want to evaluate a manager based on tangible things, then we're gonna be on ozzie where appropriate. Furthermore, talent alone can get you wins, as does your pitching staff taking the ball and running with it in the 2005 postseason. I mean did you say Piniella sucks as a manager when he was with the Drays? That team had zero talent. So you can't go off win totals there, either.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 14, 2007 -> 02:49 PM) ...there's a difference between indoor and outdoor??? How so? That seems rather silly. The Shamrocks are part of the NLL, whatever that is. Heck, I've been looking forward to seeing what the Sears Center is like, so this is pretty cool to me just for that. Sad that I am mostly interested in the place they play. Huh...just like 90% of the people at a Cubs game. The Sears Centre is a great 'small' venue. I think you'll like it. -

Yeah i'm not a fan or anything, i've just seen it a few times. I can't get into it seriously either. You are right - they allow wicked slashes up and down the field, it's kind of weird. Also, the goalies look freakin hilarious because their chest protectors are absolutely gigantic, even compared to a hockey goalie. -

You can somewhat call it hockey on grass, though it takes more of a power play form and it has a shot clock. It's kind of like hockey and basketball combined, especially when it gets into the offensive zone and gets set up. There usually isn't too much fighting nor as much hitting as there is in hockey. But it is entertaining, and you should see a ton of goals, and some unique ones at that. -
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 14, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) This thread has been hilarious. Guillen has been nothing short of spectacular for a first-time manager, bringing a World Series to a city that has been without one for 88 years; and yet, people will still question his defensive substitutions (or lack thereof), bullpen decisions, and lineup card on a daily basis. Part of me wants Guillen to get axed just so all of you can sit through a manager that does everything by the book. Go ask Bob Brenly how that worked our for him and his career. Ask Bobby Cox how he was able to manage the same franchise for 17 years--by playing every decision by the book? Hardly...and, yet, Guillen developed his managerial prospectives while under Cox's tutelage. If managers' decisions are worth roughly 10 wins or losses per year, Guillen has earned this team far more wins than he has losses. You want Bob Brenly, you can have him. Get real. 1. Bob Brenly won the same ring Ozzie did. If you want to use the ring argument, keep Brenly out of the equation, fired or not. And Brenly knows a whole hell of a lot about baseball, just listening to him during Cubs games. The guy gets it. Moving on, I didn't know Ozzie shouldn't play it by the obvious book when it comes to defensive substitutions. There was absolutely, positively zero reason Pods should have been out there that game, and look what happened. No one's been able to defend that, nor should they be able to. I'm sick of people waving the "ozzie won a ring" flag and saying we can't criticize anything he does. There's been plenty a time when he's been wrong (especially last year), and he deserved to get ripped for it. This is a message board, after all.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 13, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) Hahahaha. Oh yes, I wish we had him instead of Ozzie, please!!!!!!! When will the stupidity stop? When ozzie's stupidity stops.
