QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) I know this isn't what you mean, but I must say, I won't get tired of winning. Yeah, nor will I. It's just that you look up at the end of the game and the Sox just pounded your ass again, in a very takin-care-of-business fashion. I know we've had some dramatic wins, but this team just pounds teams into the ground.

The sox are so good they are almost boring at this point, if you know what i mean.

Jeremy Roenick sounds off about fans
IlliniKrush replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I'm a hockey purist you could say. Fighting is part of the game. There is a difference between "goonery" and fighting, though. The number of pure fighters has gone down in recent years, as has the number of fights, IIRC. Hockey is a rough sport, and checking is a beautiful part of the game. As a result, fisticuffs take place. The problem is, Rex, if you completely take fighting out of the game, you know what's going to happen? Stickwork and cheapshots will go up. Yeah, you can threaten them with suspensions all you like. But i've played the game for years, and even at travel and high school levels, it gets very intense. In the NHL, fighting is an outlet to let the guys let off some steam. I don't like the fans who are only there for the fighting. Are fights exciting? Sure. Am i there just to see them? Certainly not. It has it's time and place. I don't like brawls, and i don't like cheap play. There's a reason fighting basically disappears in the playoffs. -
Big Ten/ACC Challenge lineup is set

I'll be very interested to see this game, should be a good one. You'll sure have your hands full Greasy, but it will be a good game. IU has some potential this year, that's for sure. I still don't believe in Davis, but that's just me. I want to see if this team really is different without Bracey, like many of you have been saying. -

First off, i've been to over 300 Blackhawks games in my life (dad had season tickets in the old stadium for years), and i'm as big a hockey fan as there is. There is some truth to what he said, and i can see where he's going...but he went about it in the wrong way, and at the wrong time. I can't believe he'd say some of that s***, especially after we lost a season. It wasn't smart at all. Sometimes JR just needs to shutup...but that's JR for you. As far as hockey goes, i know it's barely part of the 4 major sports right now, but it can be back on the map in a few years. They have to work on marketing the sport better (look what marketing has done for NASCAR), and they have to change the game to make it more exciting (or have more scoring). They have to enable the great players to make great plays, by cracking down on obstruction. They have to crackdown on the goalie equipment. They'll institute a shootout, you can bank on it. These aren't drastic changes to the game. Making the net bigger or something like that would be ridiculous. But they need to start attracting the non-hockey fan (not people like me) to the sport. I like some of the stuff ESPN was doing with their "hockey rules" segment. Every few weeks they'd have a game where there would be constant graphics explaining hockey terms, rules, and strategy. For someone who doesn't know hockey very well, it would be a great learning tool. I honestly think some people can't stand hockey because they don't understand it. Bear with me here...i'm not ripping on you non-hockey fans. But hockey is a very complex game. There's more s*** going on at one time than you realize - it's not just an unorganized clusterf***. Kap described it nicely earlier in this thread. I've played the game for about 17 years now, and it's a great game. I used to hate basketball, to be honest. Once i understood the game better, i started to love it. I think it's a great game. I hate the NBA, but i love college basketball. All i'm saying is that hockey has it's problems, but people need to give it a chance. I'm sure ticket prices will be down this season - if they aren't, something's terribly wrong. But hockey is a great sport, and the playoffs are the best of the four major sports - whether you think that's a biased statement or not. Each sport is great in it's own way. Some may like certain sports more than others. But to rip on something out of ignorance is just wrong. For those of you not familiar with the game, don't watch it on TV before you attend it live a few times. If you are a student, go to a hawks game for 8 bucks with a student ID. Hell, it might even be less than that after this lockout. Many people think live hockey is the only way to go. Obviously, i can watch it on tv just the same. But i think in person it will be much more 'bearable' for you to watch. Also, if you go with someone who knows the game well, it will enhance you experience greatly. -

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:20 PM) Illinois vs. Wake Forest. I waited 5 hours outside the stadium in the krush line and still didn't get floor seats. IlliniKrush was there at 8 AM that day. Right before tipoff, I've never heard any place get louder in my life. Yeah, that was great game, worth the wait. Off the top of my head: Best: Illinois/Arizona this year Others: 91-92: All-Star game at Chicago Stadium and Stanley Cup Finals at Chicago Stadium Illinois at Purdue 2004, OT win Illinois/Wake Forest Illinois/Ohio St, our first loss Final Four vs Louisville National Championship vs UNC Illinois/Ohio St football in 2002, took the champs to OT and lost Michigan at NW football, the A-Train fumble game Bears vs 49ers ridiculous OT win

Tallon named GM of Blackhawks
IlliniKrush replied to CanOfCorn's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Sutter gone is just huge. It took way too long to do this. Sutter was obsessed with s***ty veterans and hated youngsters. With the Hawks, that's no direction to be going in. I want Yawney in here, and i think we're going to get it in the near future. I think Tallon has a good eye for talent and knows how to run a scouting team, something the Hawks haven't had a clue about for the past 10 years. If you don't believe me, wait until you see the youngsters that contribute on the Hawks roster earlier than later. For once our farm system isn't completely s***ty. I like what Kap is saying about Wirtz maybe surprising me. Regardless, there's a salary cap. So it's not going to take Wirtz 80 million to compete with detroit and NYR to sign key free agents. Everyone is playing under the sam rules. That doesn't mean you have to spend to the cap, of course - but a cap will make it easier to compete for these free agents, and i could see the Hawks spending more than we all think they will. A few years from now we will look back on this day as a huge day in Hawks history, bank on it. You may not think so now, but just watch. And trust me, there have been changes before where people have been excited - suhonen, sutter, smith, et al. - but i wasn't excited about any of those. This one i am, because i'm a huge Tallon fan/fan of getting Pulford out of the GM role. Also, if Yawney is given the keys to this team, we could really be going somewhere. He's the perfect fit for a young team, and everyone that has played for him in Norfolk has loved him. Damn, i'm excited for the lockout to end more than ever right now. This summer is going to be crazy once it ends. -
That's not even close to correct.

QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 11:20 AM) Pardon my ignorance. If the rule isn't 'a tie goes to the runner', what is it? I thought that was a pretty basic rule. There is no rule that says "tie goes to the runner." Besides that, though, it just sounds lame. It makes me think the people who wrote the rule book sat around and said "what if it's a tie?" and they came up with "well, we'll give it to the runner because we like offense" or something lame. Ball has to beat you to the bag, or you are safe. Period. IMO, if you "tie" the throw, you beat the throw.

I'm an umpire, but i'm still trying to figure this one out. It's one base from the rubber, 2 off...so i'm thinking that the ump determined that he stepped off the rubber to throw (pivoted his foot to the side, off the rubber). He definitely balked before hand though, as his left foot came up before his right one did. Now, i am completely unsure whether or not what Jabroni said is correct - i don't know if it's possible to give a base runner a base for a pickoff and an overthrow from the rubber at the same time, nor do i know if that's how they ruled it. I don't remember hearing that on the telecast.

Glad i don't umpire in Texas...wow

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 12:39 PM) I think I've finally convinced some people to see some Sox games. I think I'll be at the Saturday game against Boston in July. I think I might see 1 or 2 during September too. Maybe we can meet up for some games in September...steve and i will be taking some trips up from u of i for pennant race games...and also for play...........
-
Like Steve, i was in Krush this year... have been all 3 years down at school. Been on multiple road trips, tournament games, etc, in addition to all home games. It's the most attached to a team i've ever been. So yeah, it still hurts. I'll find myself thinking about the game and my emotions when i have a quiet moment just watching TV or something. It's brutal. I was at the game, and i'll never forget the feeling as time expired. I can remember every minute detail of that experience. I'll never, ever, truly be over that game. I just try not to think about it...or try to think about all the positives of the season - like just think back to the Arizona game, and how it was the greatest game i've ever witnessed.
-
Playing in Europe would be pretty lame, and i don't think that's what he wants. What hasn't he proved? That's easy - that he can play the point. That is the main thing he has to prove next year...and then someone will for sure draft him and show him some money.
