  1. The main problem with ID is that its fundamental underlying precept is that some intelligent power (and make no bones about it, each and every proponent of ID believes that the intelligent power is God, usually the Christian god) set up all the laws of nature which led us to this point in the history of the universe. That, in and of itself, is not scientifically testable. You can gather as much information as you want about the natural world, you can study what those natural laws are, you can use them to infer other information, but you can't ever get to a point where it's possible to scientifically prove that God... excuse me, an Intelligent Designer set up the rules. You can believe whatever you want to believe about why the laws of nature are what they are. Just so long as that doesn't interfere with the scientific study of those laws.
  2. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 10:16 PM) With respect to the majority of the time it's a pretty simple pattern: 1) I create a post supporting a conservative viewpoint which almost always includes a factual basis. 2) A reply quotes my post & makes defamatory & derogatory references to me personally. 3) I reply with a forceful effort to destroy the argument put forth by the offensive reply. 4) A mod takes action ONLY on my reply. 5) I make note of that in a subsequent reply & the mod might take further action. I added the emphasis in the quoted text. I have not been a member of this board for very long, but I have to disagree with your self-assessment. I have not seen you post any politically-themed post which has a valid factual basis. When this is drawn to your attention, you seem to escalate the rhetoric, without providing any facts, and seem to think (as you've posted above) that you've "destroy[ed]" the counter-argument. So you've described a pattern you're experiencing when dealing with the other posters here. You take a course of action, and the other posters here uniformly react unfavorably to your points of view. You then choose to believe that the problem is all the other posters on the board, who are united against you, bent on persecuting you for your beliefs. Have you considered that the one with the problem just might be you? Have you considered that when people disagree with you, there's an off chance that you might be wrong? The vast majority of people on this and any other internet discussion board are able to discuss controversial issues with each other, from various different points of view, without it becoming a huge incident. From what SouthSider2k5 has posted, it appears that you're the only person who draws the kind of vitriol, animosity, and complaints to the degree that you do. Now, you can choose to believe that you're the persecuted victim. You can go to bed pouting. I can't see why you'd want to stick around in such an environment, when there are lots of other internet forums filled with people who share your views. Or you can honestly evaluate what's going on, and see if there might be a way you can present yourself and your arguments without drawing a bull's eye on your chest. In the end, it's up to you. I hope I've helped.
  3. Cake, Barbara? You say you want to let them eat cake?
  4. Busy day at work. I can't say I'm not glad to have missed this firestorm. The mods appropriately edited my post. I apologize for calling Juggernaut ignorant. I let my emotions get the better of me. I will watch myself from here on.
  5. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) IDists arrive at that conclusion based on scientific facts. Utter hogwash. Name a scientific fact on which ID is based. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) The differential in the genome of a chimp & a human pales in significance to the differential in their brains. The complexity of the human brain is so much greater than that of a chimp's that natural selection is at best a secondary influence in it's evolution. Likewise the frequency of mutation that occured within man's evolution is many million times greater than that of a chimps. That is not a fact. It is speculation, completely unsupported by facts of any kind. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) The science of genetics is based on calculations of probability matrices & complexity of design. Such calculations are proving that it is improbable to suggest that mutation arising from natural selection is the primary influence in man's evolution.Again, that is your impression of the issue, not fact. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) So that is essentially what this debate is about. Should the misguided, improbable, & unsubstantiated claim that mutation arising from natural selection is the primary influence in man's evolution continue to be taught in our public schools or should it be downgraded to a secondary influence & the primary influence remain unknown? This post has been edited by the Soxtalk staff to remove objectionable material. Thank you. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Sep 4, 2005 -> 04:23 PM) Treating natural selection as a secondary influence opens the door to enlightening the students to what we know about other influences & how they affected our evolution. Based on recent polls 64% of Americans believe ID should be taught in the classrooms. If 64% of Americans wanted to teach our children that there are 30 letters in the English alphabet, should we teach that? If 64% of Americans wanted to teach our children that God does not exist, how would you feel about that? Furthermore, what would an ID lesson look like? What would go into the book? Would the Bible be a textbook? What evidence would the lesson include?
  6. B&B are great to listen to. They aren't as sycophantic as many talk shows are. And they're too drinky!
  7. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) Hmmm, we just dropped Koren Robinson...let's pick up Peter Warrick! It's funny how you used "Koren Robinson" and "dropped" so close to each other in the sentence....
  8. No question, it's price-gouging. Even so, we should do all we can to reduce our fuel consumption.
  9. My vote's for a player who is currently on the active roster and not the 15-day DL. C'mon, everybody! What we do on this board doesn't affect what happens in the games!
  10. I think we need to look at Mariotti as what he is- he stirs up controversy to sell his column and (with it) copies of the Sun Times. I don't think we should get too worked up over what he, or anyone else, has to say about the team. The Sox are going to do what they're going to do, no matter what anyone here posts on the bulletin board, no matter whether we've got the Joe Crede title graphic up again, and so on. I'm worried about the Sox' chances, based on the lousy month they just had. We all knew August would be brutal. But it's possible that the Sox were exposed against the elite of the AL. I'm very hopeful that they turn it around, but I'm very worried that they won't.
  11. Holy crap, things went downhill fast. I'm going to do something else, maybe turn the luck around.
  12. Peter Warrick always had great talent, but the attitude of David Terrell. I wouldn't go out of my way to get him on this team, but then, you never know....
  13. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 28, 2005 -> 08:12 PM) All I know is that listening to Mike North is like nails on a chalkboard. I cannot believe that he is so popular and he heads their morning show. B&B and Lawrence Holmes are good enough reason... really if you work it right, there is a full day of scheduling to listen to ESPN 1000 - Mike & Mike in the morning (until 9) Silvy and Carmen until 10 SCORE - Boers and Bernstein 10-2 Mully and Buffone until 3 (this gives you your days Bears fill) ESPN 1000 - Mac, Jurko, and Harry 3-Sox game this usually works very well, mixes up the discussion, and keeps me happpy all day! That's exactly how I would do it, if I could listen to the radio at work. Mike North is fine when he's talking about sports, but I stopped listening to him when he joined the George W. Bush Asslicking Society (to borrow a B&B phrase).
  14. Who's pitching for the Twinks right now? (MLB.com is very slow....)
  15. O'Reilly, Limbaugh, et al. Paragons of truth and virtue, they.
  16. If anything, maybe this will encourage people to stop buying those damn SUVs. My car gets 26-27 mpg, on average (combined city and highway).
  17. Thanks for coming. If you want to see good baseball (the last month or so notwithstanding), the South Side is where you want to be.

    Test for men only

Dave Barry is a funny writer.
  19. I take the CTA every day, and I predict that it is going to get more crowded as a result. The bottom line is that we, as a nation, need to focus a hell of a lot more on energy conservation. The latest energy bill focuses on expansion and extraction of new oil, while does nothing to encourage conservation. Which, of course, is what you get when you get a Texas oilman in the White House.
  20. I've gotta be optimistic. I think they'll break through in the Yanks series. But I'm not feeling great about the team right now.
  21. Dead arm? Injury? Taking it easy? In any case, his Cy Young credentials are slipping away, fast.
