May a curse be on your house, oh tribe of Cleveland!
LVSoxFan replied to knightni's topic in 2008 Season in Review
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) No you will be sick when he is hitting .227 into August, and Hawk starts a montra on how Uribe can carry a team. He will hit .350 in September to push him to .240. LOL!!! Yes, Juan "Too Little, Too Late" Uribe. Or is it: Juan "One Pump Chump" Uribe (as in, has one good month then goes over the cliff)? Ugh. -
Make a wild or bold predicition for the 2008 Sox
LVSoxFan replied to santo=dorf's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My prediction is that the team succeeds or fails depending on Contreras. If he has another 2007 we are doomed. If he has anything like his 05/first half 06 stuff we could make some noise. I still think we're going to be third place at best but WHO CARES it's baseball time, baby!!!! -
So what's the latest on the game? BTW I highly doubt anybody's going on the DL for wisdom teeth. I had all four out at once and I could have played the next day.

Oh to be on a game thread again!!!!! Hello to everybody!!!!

QUOTE(Disco72 @ Mar 26, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) That is another question - and one that can only be answered over 162 games. Clearly, on paper, the Sox are, at best, the third team in the division. Like others have said, it really depends on the 3-4-5 starters. An optimist would see that Count's split finger looked like it used to, Floyd showed some talent at the end of last year, and that Danks should be better in his second season. I really don't know if any of that is true, but I like to be optimistic heading into a season. Then again, after living through those terrible 80s teams, I like having a competitive team to root for! I'm looking forward to our third-place finish in the division. Oh wait: did I say third? Why does everybody assume we'll finish ahead of... Minnesota? Anyhoo my problem is we're old and we're SLOOOOOOOW. I'll have time to go to the bathroom and back by the time Paulie, Thome, JD, AJ or Swisher get to second base on a double. Of course I'm not going to write off the season before it even starts, but I have very diminished expectations. I will say that if this is another bad year, dump 'em, dump 'em all (except the Buehrle & Vasquez) and start over with the kids.

Every year I go on, needing just one ticket (we stand in a group on the concourse) and for a long time until opening day it will say you must buy the Ozzie plan or bigger to get opening day. If you wait it out, like last year, a few days before I got in and literally purchased at face value (well, plus the $12 in TM charges) a ticket. Today I go in and the plans are gone and it directs you straight to... Stubhub! Anything on the lower level starts at $80. Everything below that is UD. What... the...

All I'll add is that opening week last year, I went to the Saturday game (and opening day). It was the coldest &!^!%! baseball game I have ever been to, bar none (-20 wind chill). A few of us were excited because there was talk of moving the game up to Milwaukee--inside--but that didn't happen. After that game, crappy 40 degree days don't phase me a bit. Bring it.

I like the idea of some type of identifying bracelet because for two years now at the game where we and the WSI people have the get-together, I don't know who anybody is or what they look like so I never meet anybody from here.

The only inkling I had that Juan might be a goner is when Ozzie made some unusually critical comments about him when talking about what the starting lineup would be. He said something to the effect of: Uribe's a great spring training player, but then the season comes and he becomes a different player. Ouch. Not sure what the entire backstory is on that, but to call out one of your vets like that? Writing was on the wall...

Oof. Another Mariotti thread. No thanks. But he's right in asking how long Stoney will last if he's not a suck-up like the Hawkeroo.
-
If KW said he can do this in two weeks I hope that IS the goal if we have another bad season.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 12:56 PM) Is it just me, or are they not hitting many homers at all? That seems somewhat strange, with all of the two-baggers into the gaps. I consider this a good thing.

QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 09:45 AM) I want Hawk and Stone! That was a great combination! Hawk doesn't respect DJ and it shows in the booth. I liked Singleton just fine but Stone is the cream of the crop. That's awesome. I'd love him in the booth: with DJ. If you hear DJ when the Hawkeroo isn't there (like once when he did the Sox on a FOX game) he's a totally different person. But Stoney? Best in the biz. I'm turning off the sound and turning on the radio, bet on it.

You know what's funny? I was talking to my hardcore Sox fan mom yesterday and telling her what I thought this year's team's chances were. Then I said, if we have another 2007-type season we might as well dump 'em all (well not Buehrle!) and rebuild with our young guys. And then I remembered: what young guys? What farm system? Oof.
-
I remember reading the "discounts" for group rates when they mailed me the brochure this spring and thinking: wow THANKS guys! Greedy!

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Feb 26, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) Why did it take management a full season to figure that "we run hard in Chicago?" It all sounds good, but we will see how it translates into wins and a championship first. LOL!!! I remember thinking the same thing.
-
Certainly those were problems but can you really deny that the team last year; with its talented players and those less talented, was absolutely without edge? Lifeless? Without emotion? I certainly don't have to think too hard to remember games I was at where you were HOPING they'd put in the benchers--anybody, anybody to play with some emotion. I specfically recall being at a Friday doubleheader where we got shelled--and I mean shelled--not once but twice by the Twins. And I also remember saying more than once--of course you can't win 'em all but could you guys at least TRY? Hopefully this is now a thing of the past if KW's p.o.'d and Konerko's acknowledging this sort of thing did exist.
-
I have to agree with Greg. If there are players who can't even get motivated to do what they're paid obscene money to do, I find that appalling. Let's hope this is indeed a "new" year; I would hate to go through 2007 ever again. That was embarassing.
-
Can you explain that reference?

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/slezak/8125...carol26.article Interesting. Obviously the team last year completely sucked but you had your pick of things that went wrong: the bullpen, Contreras, the horrible hitting, etc. This is the first I've heard of this sort of thing (although I believe Steff has hinted at it). The one person left out, though, is Ozzie. If I were running this club and I saw this kind of thing, I'd rip them a new one, or get a new club. I wonder who the "leader" will be this year seeing that there wasn't one last year. My money's on Swisher, although he's already been chewed out by KW for not running it out to first base, LOL. Thoughts?
-
YAY! Thank God The Tradition is backc where it should be.
-
I have yet to hear anybody who thought we should have paid $90 for Torii. I don't blame KW for that; it sure seemed like we had him at $75MM. I guess we'll find out pretty quick this year if we're "contenders" or not.
-
My guess is he will be onstage with Ozzie and KW for the Q&A part, which I hope to be at.

Which day is the KW/Ozzie/Hawk question-fest? I'm assuming Swisher will be onstage as well. That's what I want to be at. I believe it's on the Saturday, yes? -
There well I think we all were more in agreement than we thought. And the more I think about this trade, the more I'm starting to like it.
