QUOTE(iamshack @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) Especially considering that despite his defensive shortcomings, Jermaine has looked awfully good at the plate this series. The Ranger was just speaking to this a few minutes ago, saying he envisions Dye taking over at DH next season. Which begs the question, would we rather have Dye at DH for $11 million, or Thome at DH for $13 million, and what will we do with the other one? Keep in mind Thome's option automatically triggers if Thome reaches 600 PA's this year, or 1,100 PA's between 07' and 08'. I believe Thome had 536 PA's last season, so he would need 564 this season to reach 1,100. A lineup with Dye at DH and a combination of our young outfielders in the OF would be better than Thome at DH and Dye in RF, I think. Our defense would be drastically improved, and we'd probably take a step back offensively in the start, but it would come along as the year went on for the young guys. Thome's getting up there in the years, and with his powerful swing, I can't imagine him being able to stay healthy for that much longer.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 12:47 PM) Some team is going to get a bargain when they trade for Anderson in a month. That's for sure. Fantastic defense, and his offense is going to be coming around sooner rather than later.

QUOTE(lostfan @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) I guess that would depend on what your plans would be if Anderson hits .235 for the first half of the season and Quentin gets hurt again and/or stays hitting around his career average. I mean, yeah, ideally it'd be nice to see both of those guys performing to their full potential but what about when you don't have access to a crystal ball? I don't disagree that it wouldn't be the best decision if we were a championship caliber team right now. However, realistically, we aren't going to win anything big this year. I think that you have to accept that fact, and based off of that, we should give our young players that have some potential some time getting regular playing time in the bigs. If we keep using them as backups, they aren't going to get their regular play, making it that much tougher for them to get into a groove and build up their confidence. Instead, we gave a statue a multi-year extension when we already have both a 1B and DH. Defense is very important for a team whose pitching staff doesn't strike people out, which is definitely the case with all of our starters with the exception of possibly Vasquez.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) He doesn't know how to get the f*** out of the way when there's a high flyball in the gap. There's absolutely no excuse for playing him in RF with Carlos Quentin in the lineup. Jermaine is probably the 4th best RF on this team right now. Sounds about right. I still don't understand why Dye is still on this team, or why we gave him that extension. An OF of Swisher-BA-Quentin would be much better, both offensively and defensively.

Listening to the post-game, it sounds like Jermaine had a terrible day out there in RF. Any details from those who watched it?

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) I hope AJ keeps hitting. He looks like a completely different batter. He was one of the guys that needed to improve this year. If he continues to swing with a contact swing as opposed to his balls-to-the-wall-HR-or-nothing swing, he can be a good offensive player. It's when he just swings for the fences that his offensive game really drops.
-
It'd be great to see Danks continue these types of performances throughout the year. Keep in mind, he was a top prospect not too long ago, and did just add another pitch. Hopefully he can stay consistent, a good third starter would be HUGE for this team.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) The Sox gave up 2 hits. Danks gave up 2 hits and 2 walks in 6.2. The bullpen performed quite well. Sox had a few chances to open the game up & didn't capitalize, Crede & Uribe with solo shots. Westbrook really slowed us down, both starters had strings of 11 in a row retired. Sounds like an encouraging game for the Sox. Danks being good could be huge for this team, as is the bullpen doing as well as the box score suggests.

I apparently missed the whole game, but does anyone want to give me a recap? Looks like Danks did well.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) Why the Ozuna hate? People seem to forget, Pablo was a solid bench guy in 05 and 06 when he was healthy. He hit .328 with a .365 OBP in 2006, which was his last full season. He adds some speed, and he's not bad defensively at 2B and 3B. Hopefully they won't put him in the OF much though, because he's pretty bad out there. I've always hated Ozuna as a starter. As a backup, he's somewhat valuable (assuming his speed is back, which I don't think is a given after that injury last year) as a backup infielder with a spot start every now and then. However, as a starter, he offers absolutely no patience at the plate, as well are hardly any power. Those two things combined are a very bad thing, as its unlikely that he's going to keep up the hitting at a high average. When that happens, the OBP and SLG drop, which is not encouraging at all. I don't forget what he did in 2006, he was good. Problem is, that's the only time he's been good in his entire career. Prior to that, his highest career OPS in a season was .708 in 24 AB during his rookie year (oh, and to refute any "OPS isn't the way to value these types of players" argument, it was also a good 50 points higher than his career average, and he's a very AVG driven player). All things considered, when he's 31 and having his "breakout" year in 189 AB, I find it hard to be excited about him, especially with our managements fascination with putting him in LF (which makes him even worse of a player, although I doubt he'll be out there that much this year with our OF "depth").

QUOTE(lostfan @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 08:57 AM) The difference between Ozuna and Uribe at the plate is that Ozuna actually makes contact sometimes instead of whiffing so hard at a pitch above his eye level that he blows a hat off a nearby fan's head. I don't disagree, but the Ozuna hype on these boards gets ridiculous at times. There's a reason he's a backup.. he's not a good player. Don't get me wrong, neither is Uribe, but given his power when he does make contact with the ball, there isn't going to be a huge difference between the two starting.

A win... please. I'm tired of these losses. QUOTE(Allsox @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) I just hope we see Anderson and Ozuna in place of Ramirez/Uribe. Need a little life from the 7-9 slots as Joe is still not there yet. Something tells me you won't see any extra life with Ozuna in the lineup, unless you want someone that'll run really hard to first while grounding out.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 10:37 PM) You have made your choice to stay alcohol free. That's great and I commend you for it. However, you should get off your high horse when it comes the choices that others have made. If you're a non-drinker, then maybe you should consider staying out of alcohol related threads. That's what I was going to reply with. I mean, really, what did you expect a thread called "i am drunk" to be about? Why even enter it in the first place, let alone reply to it?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 1, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) That's low, I am clueless in the class and I felt the karma that the Sox were going to lose anyways because they were getting f***ed. So I have legit reasons. I know the feeling, and don't blame you at all in reality. I just felt obligated to make that comment, given the situation.

I'll try to join in on these this year. Any reason why it won't let me be "Felix" when I join it? It makes me enter a password, which apparently isn't the same as my forum pw, causing me to be Felix#### instead (where # is some number).
