  1. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 05:27 PM) Actually haven't recent finds determined that the people that built the pyramids were actually paid laborers? I'm pretty sure I remember watching a show where they found a small city nearby one of the work sites that kinda showed they were paid - they had taverns, doctors offices, bakeries, etc. - enough commercial activity to assume they had some money to spend. You are correct. They were not slaves. Well, some might have been, but generally not.
  2. Freel has only played in 123 games in the past 2 seasons. Looks like he's a utility player on the Reds, backing up Corey Patterson. Plus he's 32. I can't imagine that would be the other player.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) I'm not sure really applies when you have a huge contract ($10 million+), then Griffey would be walking away from a lot more money from the White Sox (and Reds with some money coming to us) than he would have a prayer of getting from any other team. That's the players' union's business, but Selig wouldn't care and the CBA doesn't prevent it. But, you may be right, in that Griffey may not want to take the heat for turning that deal down.
  4. I was under the impression that it was common practice to offer a player arbitration under an agreement that he won't accept. And since when was it clear that Cabrera will be offered arbitration?
  5. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 09:08 PM) I know this sounds cruel on my part, but in the end it was just dogs. Idonno how I feel about people doing serious jail time because of animals, which if he wasnt a superstar probably would be in jail for a much longer time. Realize that people who torture animals have a tendency to, later, kill people. It's not a matter of simply killing an animal for food, but the actual desire to witness the agony of the animal.
  6. QUOTE (shipps @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 08:44 PM) The funny thing is there just so happened to be an off duty police officer that seen it happen and he came to make sure I was ok than he went looking for the guy.He found the pickup a few blocks down but who ever was in it fled.I imagine they are going to get back to me on it,if not the police my insurance company is gonna hunt the guy down.Not really sure yet if Iam going to get royaly screwed out of this whole deal or not. Unfortunately the people who flee the scene usually have no insurance or money. If they find him he will be arrested for the hit and run.
  7. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 07:34 PM) I had the SCORE on all afternoon... from Murphy's show until about 6pm and never once heard them mention anything about Dye or Tampa. The only WhiteSox news they reported at all was the Viciedo signing. So... help me out... were there any reputable baseball reporters talking about this today? If so... who and when? Same here. This is all non-sense from Levine I guess.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 05:03 PM) How is it that the radio's have been reporting this, but not a word on it on the internet, especially on mlbtraderumors which reports if someone on the northside sneezes and it sounds like Peavy. While I'm surprise that mlbtraderumors doesn't have it, other writers might be waiting to get a scoop before reporting. They might be waiting to get some new info...or there is nothing to any of this.
  9. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 05:21 PM) I agree with who said that Pelfrey won't be in the deal. I just can't see the Mets trading a 24 year old SP who posted a 3.8 ERA last year. Plus, he's a Boras client. If that happens, we'd have to get Heilmann, Murphy, and someone else, but the Mets would be robbing us then. BTW, Dan Murphy strained his hamstring yesterday and is skipping winter ball. I don't know what effect that has. Linky
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 05:16 PM) Apparently they've never heard of John Danks, nor did they realize that Quentin is 100 percent untouchable. People who live in NY don't know anything about the Sox unless ESPN told them. I live in NY and that stereotype is not a myth.
  11. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) That makes 2 of us. Probably the only 2. It's f***ing stupid. I'm not on it. Make it 3.
  12. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 10:36 PM) Are they this weekend? December 8-11.
  13. So what happens to this promotion on the Score's website: I don't actually care, but I like the picture.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) I can’t understand why anyone would ever want to root for a team that can just go out and buy all the talent. There’ no competitive spirit, no underdog mentality, it’s just we have the money, and we’re gonna put it to good use. uh...how about because they win.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) REPOIRE Rally McBoone/Dougal. LOL. I think some money must have changed hands from the Red Sox to the Royals...we'll find out later I guess. I hope you aren't correcting his spelling. It's "rapport."
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) Well...if the kid's a legit 19, I just can't imagine Cashman or Epstein thinking he would possibly be ready, maturity-wise or physically, for the mental grind of dealing with playing in either of those two cities (or Philly, for that matter). Cashman, I would have thought, should have learned his lesson/s from Contreras. You really need to do the background work and due diligence before bringing a Swisher or Viciedo onto your roster. Personally, my read on all this is that the ACTUAL concrete offers they have received until now were pretty underwhelming...if they had something that knocked their socks off, there would be some more "fire/smoke" about the signing being imminent. Maybe they are just playing teams against each other and weighing their options, but I can't imagine Torres preferring to stick him in NY or BOS unless he's 100% confident he can handle the pressure there. He knows that the White Sox, with Guillen/Contreras/Ramirez, would be a much better and more natural fit. Even as a RFer, with Dye possibly trade bait and definitely out of the picture in Chicago after 2010. I agree. Either there is a bidding war or the offers aren't very good. By now, we would have heard something if there was a bidding war.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 02:08 AM) My bad. But your comment is baffling as well. Why will they undoubtedly regress? Why can't they do as well or better? isn't that what competition is about? Improving? I was wondering about them being one-year wonders but hoping they would be as good or better. Not surely regressing. Their innings pitched increased dramatically last year. Injury is more likely than "regression" though the outcome will be about the same.
  18. The scouts better be right about Beckham because that would mean the Sox don't target Hudson, leaving Getz, Nix, and Betemit manning second to start the season. That's fine defensively, but they all seem to be 9th hitters, which Beckham may be as well for a while. Lead-off will have to come from center field. I'd say that limits KW's options.
  19. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 06:03 PM) How about the Garland wasn't very good in 2008 argument? Isn't that one pretty convincing? Cabrera was right around his career averages (slightly better OBP, slightly worse average) while Garland had a 4.90 ERA, his worst since his first year in the majors (and pretty close to his 2004). Garland also took himself out of the Angels post season rotation. Imagine if Javy had done that? (actually, there may have been applause)
  20. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 10:15 AM) Arent Boston and New York set at 3B for the foreseeable future? I know they like to just pile on the talent, but it doesnt seem like Viciendo would get a fair shot to compete at the job with either of those two teams, and that could play pretty heavily into the White Sox favor. Tores has said that Viciedo would play RF if he is paid extra. I'm sure the Yankees are overbidding for the kid.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) So what the f*** is going on with Viciedo!? Torres said last week that he wanted to be done with it today, but it sounds like there was more interest than even he expected.
  22. Interesting stuff. Although I guess we already considered this information. Fox Sports
  23. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) I believe the contract is null. He doesn't get a dime. The sentence prior to the one you highlighted is the operable phrase. The player is unencumbered and free to contract.
  24. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 16, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) This list of Scott Boras clients is one of MLBTradeRumors' best contributions to the world of armchair GM's. Prince is on there, so no dice. The Sox won't give up the talent required if there's no hope for an extension. Boras is the reason the Brewers will trade him in the first place. Not necessarily true. He'd be under control for a couple seasons and we've seen Uribe and Danks change agents. If not, then he could be moved for good value later. That said, you're probably right. In any event the Brewers would want younger pitchers than Javy. Like Danks and Floyd.
