QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 27, 2012 -> 06:57 PM) Forgive my ignorance, but why the f*** are Somali pirates such a problem? Why aren't we just having the Navy sink them left and right? I think diplomatically it is better to have them arrested and tried in African countries like Kenya. That raises a whole different set of issues.

Ok is anyone else hearing that weird background twanging noise? It's driving me nuts.
  3. So I finally went and made a second batch of ginger beer using a wine yeast designed for lower temps. It worked! Well close enough. The Morgenthaler recipe calls for 48 hour fermentation but that wasn't enough. It needed 72 hours to maintain carbonation. The swing top worked well. My ingredients were lacking. The lemon was a bit old and the ginger, while fresh from the store, had a lot of green which tends to lead to that weird white solid stuff that doesn't taste right. Anyway, I used what I had, and my primary goal was getting carbonation. If it sucked but was carbonated I figured my recipe would still be one step closer to being right. My first batch tasted great but wasn't carbonated at all. This batch is decent enough (drinkable and carbonated). I added a squeeze of fresh lime (about .5oz) to get the balance on a nice Dark and Stormy. I then found out that PF Changes uses something called Elixir G and soda for their ginger beer. I love their ginger beer and suspected they cheated to get the right taste consistently. Fresh ginger seems...finicky. Anyway, here's a toast with a Dark and Stormy. Also had a Founders Breakfast Stout today but that's a tale for later.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Feb 26, 2012 -> 01:40 PM) On a whole or nationally, yes. But apparently in bigger cities, the ratio is much more dramatic. Yeah maybe to like 1.5:1 but not 8:1
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 25, 2012 -> 07:09 PM) If you walk outside right now on the East coast and look to the South, you'll see a gorgeous crescent Moon, with a bright light very close to it. That light is Venus. If you then look up and to the East just slightly, the next bright object you'll see is Jupiter. Great trio out there tonight. All I see are black clouds while the wind is knocking me over and my dog is trying to eat rabbit s***. How's that for a trio?
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 09:27 PM) Death.....by staplegun QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 09:40 PM) People say mean things about them on the internet. I don't know which is worse.
  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 06:21 PM) Nope. You generate this type of hype, you better live up to it long-term...or else. Or else what?
  8. From reading the procedures posted earlier (link), here are the sections that were probably at issue: (page 37) (page 38) This was on Saturday I think. (page 39) I suspect that the collector assumed that the last section covered him. But I think there are places at each park to store samples which would not break COC. He took them home.
  9. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 23, 2012 -> 09:28 PM) Thats what I thought, so the test is already very unreliable (in terms of drug tests its the worst reliability, 1 is hair and 2 is blood), there was a reading that was far outside of the normal range (even for failed tests,, at least thats what I believe I read when it came out) and there was poor handling of the sample. Surprised that it was 2-1 Panels are always 2-1.
  10. What I don't understand it, is it enough to just break the chain of custody? Shouldn't there be some evidence that contamination was likely to occur? My problem is, even if it was sitting around, refrigerated or not, what could have happened that it could be contaminated with a banned substance? Or were they literally unable to introduce the sample into evidence because the COC was broken?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 21, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) Hah, my Great Dane will pull and choke himself if he is on a leash but if I take him off it he'll just walk next to me...and never really go too far from me if we are in the park or hiking in the mountains. I guess it's because I rarely take him for walks on his leash, but instead have always taken him to places where he can be off leash. We walk him a lot on leash at parks because we have to. But he has been trained to play off leash so he can fetch and play with other dogs and not run off. Fetch might be the most important thing you can teach a dog for your sanity and for his health. They have a lot more energy than we do and it makes life a lot easier when you can throw a ball and he will tire himself out and get good exercise. But they do push boundaries when you first let them off the leash. That's a bit scary.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Feb 21, 2012 -> 12:23 PM) I understand how it's supposed to be done. But I've also seen that it's possible for people that are supposed to know what they are doing to do it incorrectly. The other methods I described take that risk away. There were other things the trainers did that I didn't like as well. One of them was getting the dog to sit when you stop by literally stepping on their back foot. No training method is perfect for every dog, but some trainers are just abusive. The best method I found is to have treats to make sure the dog keeps his focus on you and not on everything around him. You just give fewer treats as he gets more successful at it. When my dog was young he was great at walking on the leash but as he grew up he was interested in other things. I don't live in a city setting so his safety isn't constantly dependant on good leash manners. My dog really doesn't care about walking around my neighborhood. He would rather sniff everything and roll in the grass or play fetch. But, if I take him on a hike somewhere he never goes I can trust him to be off leash and never get more than 20 feet from me while he explores. If he gets too far he responds well to commands and he can have that freedom. He has visited several cities and he will walk next to me without much hassle. He ignore people unless they approach him. Again, he is interested in the new place and handles it very well. Edit: I don't know what the point of this post was. I guess, it's more important that the dog adapt to your lifestyle rather than ensuring he can do everything perfectly (because he won't).
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 21, 2012 -> 11:58 AM) That reads really odd: make it exceedingly difficult to maintain that independent expenditures by corporations “do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” Id., at ___(slip op., at 42). A petition for certiorari will give the Court an opportunity to consider whether, in light of the huge sums currently deployed to buy candidates’ allegiance, Citizens United should continue to hold sway. That would seem to suggest the Court is actually going to consider whether Citizens United was a good ruling. A stay is probably necessary all things considered. Yeah that's a weird thing and I'm not familiar with "statements" from the SC in such cases. Notice though that the statement appears to be made by Ginsburg and Breyer, both of whom dissented in Citizens United. So expect a fight.

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 20, 2012 -> 03:19 PM) Maybe take the puppy pads he has peed on outside with him so he can sniff them out there and associate the two? Has to be hard house training a puppy when you work all day. I got my puppy during the summer when the most he was alone was two hours in his crate. Easier to train. Be firm with your NOs towards the mess, not the pup. Praise like crazy with rewards when he goes outside. That makes no sense. There is no purpose to yelling at the mess. The dog isn't going to understand. You just clean it and don't acknowledge it at all. Giving any form of reaction to the problem is just as likely to give him the impression that he can piss you off by doing that.

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 19, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) I give him bones but I can see some plaque on his back teeth. Wasn't sure if it was a big deal or I should take him in for a cleaning. Will try a greenie to see how it works. Hope it doesn't mess with his bowels. Not sure he would let me brush his teeth or not. Is there doggy toothpaste? Never thought about it. Yes. There are tons of cleaning options. My dog used to love getting his teeth brushed because he liked taste of mint. But he's lost his fondness for the toothbrush.

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 19, 2012 -> 11:23 AM) Anyone ever use those Greenie treats to try and get your dogs teeth cleaned? Do you just let the dog chew on them or do you brush their teeth with it? It's a chew. It just looks like a toothbrush. We've tried that stuff in the past but I don't really think they work. Dog liked it though as a treat. I should add that brushing works because of the friction that helps remove plaque. Those things arent hard enough to get the dog scrapping it's teeth on it. A good bone will work better than those. Or just use a brush.
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 19, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) There is no specific "Right to Privacy" amendment in the Bill of Rights or anywhere else in the constitution. So, I'm wondering along what lines this will be argued. If it is going any higher up, there has to be a constitutional claim. It will be argued under the line of cases that created the notion of a right to privacy. Roe said it was created under the penumbra of the 4th, 5th, 9th, 1st or something like that. So it is really about how far the cases will be extended.

  22. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Feb 18, 2012 -> 05:46 PM) They're just getting out-hustled, I think the Bulls will make a run and probably make a game of it, at least I hope so. They did make a run. They got to within 7 and let the nets blow the game open again. Because they've lost 8 straight Williams and Humphies aren't going to see much of the bench.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 18, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) Time to turn this game off. Bulls didn't come to play today I don't know why I have this on still. I feel bad for anyone paying to watch this. And how can a contending team be this bad at free throws?
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 18, 2012 -> 10:48 AM) Most of what we call right to privacy seems to be under the 4th, 5th, or 9th each always seem like a stretch to me. You are correct though, perhaps the 5th Amendment would fit better. 5th applies to criminal investigations as well.

So we have a dog with very serious possession issues with bones. When he is tired and has a bone he will guard it like a hawk. He will growl and bite if he feels threatened. He won't go out of his way to hurt anyone. My real fear is that some kid is going to get near him at the wrong time and he will bite. We don't have kids so we just ignore him but I'm kinda sick of this. Anyone deal with this?
