QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 7, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) What kind law do you practice G&T? Health law. But I have an LLM in Government Administration and Regulation. I want to eventually be in house at a hospital or health department. Representing people is a necessary evil right now.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 7, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) When you are sending a resume make sure it looks good on the paper. By that I mean formatting etc. I just went through a stack of resumes, and to be honest I barely even read what was in them, I just was looking for what year were they graduating. Some of them looked terrible though, and if I was being more discerning it would have cost them an opportunity. I agree here. I haven't had occasion to do a lot of hiring, but the number of people who either have bad formatting or put experience that is so totally irrelevant to the project that it is off-putting is amazing. I had someone (who I eventually hired) for a legal research project put life guarding down as experience. Since they were all students, I figured I'd let it slide. Meanwhile, I had a phone interview today at a place I thought would be perfect for me. During the interview it became clear that the listed responsibilities I was most excited about aren't really the primary responsibilities...and might not be part of the job at all. I was interested in compliance and policy work, but it turned out to be representation, and case load supervision. So the next time I get concerned about over selling my experience on my resume, I am going to remember that they probably have over sold the job responsibilities.

  5. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 11:07 PM) I just tried a new orgeat recipe and it hands-down produced the best batch of orgeat I have ever made. Not too dark or too cloudy to screw up the aesthetics of a Mai Tai in the glass, it still has tons more flavor than the cruddy chemo-commercial alternatives like Fee Bros. and Torani. A variation of a recipe buried deep in the Appleton Rums website, My scaled down and slightly altered recipe was as follows: • Blanch 12 oz whole raw almonds in water brought to boil and then removed from heat for 1 minute • Remove skins (easy to do after blanching) and place almonds in a blender with 30 oz water. Blend • Filter almond milk through cotton or cheesecloth filters, squeezing out as much milk as possible from the spent nuts. • Heat collected almond milk along with sugar (I used plain light granulated because I wanted a lighter finished product, original recipe called for Demerara) at a 2:1 sugar to liquid ratio until sugar is completely dissolved. • Allow to cool and then add: 1.5 oz Appleton V/X rum (original recipe calls for 12 year Extra), 1.5 oz amaretto, 0.75 oz rose water, 1/4 tsp. almond extract. Yield: ~ 1.25 L The wife and I are now enjoying a couple of the best Mai Tais we have ever made. Awesome find! That actually looks like a fairly simple recipe...except for the rose water...

My dog hated his crate so we felt awful using it. But he never chewed anything so the couch has proven to be fine for him. How long are you gone during the day and have you acclimated her to being alone?
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) Obama isnt Jewish, he cant be the Messiah. You want the US economy to go back into overdrive, let more immigrants in. Its simple economics, when you screw with the supply of labor you artificially increase the cost of labor. That means companies go to other markets for labor where there is not inefficient regulation. Its a pretty fun historical comparison when you look at the US economy and compare it to immigration totals. http://web.missouri.edu/~brente/immigr.htm Immigration restricted in 1924.... But its more fun to say immigrants steal our jobs! Something isn't right about that graph. Because according to the Census Bureau: Which is corroborated by Table 1 at this link. In fact in 2010, "The U.S. foreign-born population has risen to its highest level since 1920, with 13% of all those living in the nation in 2010 having been born elsewhere, a new report from the Census Bureau shows."

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:32 AM) I've not utilized one connection I made in law school in the 4 years it has been since I graduated. I hate to say it, but I don't trust people in the legal field as far as I can throw them. Funny thing is, when I started working at that firm my dad told me to be careful. I was working a lot of hours because I wanted to prove myself, but he kept saying they are going to work me into the ground, then screw me over. He's a doctor so he hates lawyers anyway, but he was right. However, I've met a ton of great people since.

Problem with networking for me was that my network was full of jags when I graduated from law school. I worked for a firm for two years in school but when the market tanked, the managing partner's friend came looking for work and I didn't get the open associate position. I worked my ass off for them but that meant nothing. Then they basically left me out to dry. They were happy to be references when necessary but wouldn't make a call to get me an interview or anything. While it sucked not getting that job I've always suspected that it was a good thing. That's not a good network. Since then I got a masters degree and took whatever jobs I could to rebuild a network. Everyone I've met since has been the opposite. They make calls on my behalf, write recommendations if they can, etc. I took a job at the law school in an academic capacity and started working in their law clinics to make sure I had client experience as well. My network is now law professors and deans from around the country that I've met at conferences I ran (not just attended) in addition to those I've worked for. We moved back to WI and my network actually has connections here and are willing to put my resume in front of anyone they can for me. That's a good network. I don't know if it will land me a job, but it's nice to know that someone is willing to vouch for my work. And I have experience in academia (a posh landing spot for sure). Meanwhile, by working in the clinics and actually leading cases I learned what I liked and didn't like about litigation which has pointed me towards a career path that I think I'd excel in. So essentially, I'm 29 and my career has never really lifted off. But I feel that I'm closer to landing in a perfect spot that I would have otherwise been if things had gone as "planned".
  10. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ May 30, 2012 -> 04:07 PM) That image of the one eyeball with no eyelid that looks like it's just floating there on some strawberry jello will be with me for a long time. That's enough for me not to click that link.

  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 29, 2012 -> 09:22 PM) DJ and Farmer are funny as hell. They kind of suck at describing the game (especially DJ), but they have good chemistry and can be fun to listen to. So they are bad at what they are paid to do...
  14. This is dumb. Unless Kevin Hickey made PK hit .500. Which I doubt. But if he did, then we should sacrifice an ex-player every year to give PK continued life.
  15. You are wrong. Stoney is amazing but Hawk got board with him. However, DJ and Farmer have to be launched. They are awful bad. To be clear, I have nothing against Paciorek, but Hawk always pushes guys out eventually.
  16. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 29, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) that really was a fun team that kind of came out of nowhere. good comparison. Looking back at it is unreal. Ray Durham, Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko, Magglio Ordonez, AND Carlos Lee in the same lineup. They hit .286 .356 .470 .826 as a TEAM

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ May 29, 2012 -> 09:18 AM) It is also still in the healing process, I was going to see how it ended up after a couple of months of using Mederma and letting it heal completely before I do anything Uh...no. Take pictures of it now. Maybe it heals and you don't care later on, but if it doesn't heal you need evidence of how it looked. Make sure there's a date stamp on the pics.
  19. QUOTE (knightni @ May 28, 2012 -> 07:06 PM) Of course, being in WI now, you'll need to stock up on the New Glarus Spotted Cow. Spotted Cow is coming up through the sewers around here (not that I'm complaining), but if you have a selection of New Glarus, there's a lot more. The Dancing Man Wheat and Black Top are amazing. The Raspberry Tart is quite good, though pricey. And I have a lot left to try. Then there's Capital Brewing (best maibock I've had), Ale Asylum (Bedlam is the best Belgian IPA I've tasted), Tyranena, and Central Waters....plus I finally have full access to Bells, Founders and 3 Floyds which, for some reason, no one else seems to be drinking. Ah yes...it's a hell of a place. And now I need a job...dammit.
  20. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ May 26, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) Good luck on the transition from the east coast to the Midwest. And good luck on the job hunt! I can absolutely see a small splash of dram punching up a Gin and Tonic nicely, and I am absolutely in favor of a scant dash of Ango in mine. My big Finer Things phenomena of late include having a fantastic time with the wife at Hukilau — the highlight of which for me was Beachbum Berry's Zombie history seminar. I am also over-the-moon happy that Lemon Hart 151 is now finally here in Florida and I don't have to keep pestering my family to bring me bottles from up north. Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale has already ditched the inferior 151 (probably Bacardi) they had been using for the last 15 years and have reformulated many of their classic drinks with the newly available Lemon Hart 151 that they originally called for. A commando return trip ti Mai Kai last week on my way home from a Miami work trip confirmed that in a drink like the Jet Pilot, the presence of the LH 151 makes all the difference in the world. I had a Jet Pilot just the month before at Hukilau and it was relatively forgettable, but with the LH 151 it is now among my favorite drinks on their menu. Speaking of Mai Kai, G&T if you have not yet discovered Jim "Hurricane" Hayward's Atomic Grog website, you are in for a treat. Hurricane (with whom I struck up a friendship online and at Hukilau) has spent the last year reviewing, researching the history of, and in many cases formulating "tribute recipes" for every single drink on the Mai Kai menu and even a couple of retired special cocktails. He has one more drink to go and then in two weeks he'll celebrate the accomplishment by hosting the first ever Mai Kai Mixer in the Molokai Bar at the restaurant where they will serve several different special tiki cocktail flights and give a bit of a seminar on the drinks. I am desperately hoping I can get back down there for it, but not sure yet. At any rate, check out the blog and start mixing up some of his tribute recipes – especially for some of the drinks whose ancestor recipes you already know from Beachbum's books. LH 151 was not available in NY but it turns out it is available in WI. Crazy. And it will be in my recipes soon...but right now I have a ridiculous beer world to explore. How a town this size can have this much good beer is totally beyond my understanding. I'm checking out that blog. Really cook stuff. Certainly wish I was a bit closer to Mai Kai but I suppose the blog will do. Thanks!
  21. Happy (hoppy?) Birthday!
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2012 -> 02:55 PM) How long has it been since they lost 12 in a row? I'd like some milestone updates here. I think we are just in the 1997 0-14 start territory.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 26, 2012 -> 11:01 PM) Is that legal? Player & ball ended up in HR territory. If you were to to jump the fence & then catch the ball in the stands, would that be an out or a homer? A part of your body must in the field of play to record an out.
  24. Oh Boy. So many things. I moved to WI which means I have a whole new world to explore, but I am resurrecting this thread based on a discovery. I may be drunk (I am bc I'm unemployed now) but a Gin and Tonic with the addition of a bottle cap (literally I used a beer bottle cap) of pimento dram is a winner. I happened to also have 2 dashes of Angostura. I'm not sure if the bitters are needed but the dram is good stuff. I also had my first Gumballhead (disappointing but that's for another time), Raspberry Tart, Dancing Man Wheat (amazing) and some other stuff that deserves mention. And in time, I will update.
  25. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 24, 2012 -> 06:39 AM) Never had more than one beer at a Sox game if I was driving. There's this handy thing called the 'L' that takes people home without having to drive. I'm in favor of having two 'levels' of DUI. As it stands now (in every state I know of) someone who is .09 and someone who is .18 are both committing the exact same crime, but I think we'd all agree that the person who is .18 is much more likely to cause an injury/death and to some extent is making a much more irresponsible decision by driving. Most states have "aggravated DUI" based on various factors including BAC levels.
