  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 08:56 AM) Palmeiro, McGwire, Giambi immediately came to mind. That's about 10 all star appearances during Frank's run just from those 3. There's also a Mo Vaughn start in there and a Tino Martinez start. Not saying those guys juiced, but Mo wouldn't shock me...and Tino wasn't as good as Frank whether he played in NYC or not. McGwire Was in the NL by 1998. The only guys who screwed him were probably Giambi and Edgar Martinez. Frank wasn't healthy some years and he primarily a DH. Unfortunately he also paid for not being very kind to the media.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) It all part of his genius, keeping the pressure off his team and the spotlight on himself. I can't believe intelligent people actually bought that for years, but they did. I guess it was just hard to accept Ozzie wasn't about the White Sox or now the Marlins, Ozzie is about Ozzie. Does anyone think its just a coincidence the 2012 Marlins are really going like the Sox teams after 2005 with the same expectations? I think deep down Loria knows Ozzie isn't a very good manager and hasn't sold the tickets he was hoping. He's probably holding on for some sort of miracle and hoping the people in south Florida hop on the Ozzie bandwagon, but its becoming more remote by the day. I still think it did work in 2005 and 2006. Once they started bringing in rookies and younger players things went wrong. Plus I'm not real sure he was trying after 2008.

    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 3, 2012 -> 10:55 PM) Anyone out there ever faced the possibility of relocating somewhere all by yourself? I've been applying to jobs all over the country, and the prospect of moving to a town in Wyoming or something is kind of intimidating. I moved to upstate NY for school alone. We just moved back to Wisconsin. People are people everywhere but the way of live changes. I find it fun.
  4. Sox are now 4 games worse than their Pythagorean. Worst in the AL, second to the Cardinals. Hopefully they correct to that level in the second half.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 2, 2012 -> 08:15 AM) Catching a game at Miller Park on Wednesday. Ozzie & his band of misfits happen to be the opponent, although looks like I miss #56 by one day. The tailgating is epic. Even though they make you go into the game now.
  6. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 30, 2012 -> 02:22 PM) Jake is now 1-3 in complete games this season. He must hate this offense. No one pays attention to wins. When he negotiates a new contract, those complete games will be just as valuable.
  7. QUOTE (RZZZA @ Jun 30, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) Quintana gave up 4 runs in one inning last night and the offense had his back. All these guys better apologize to Peavy after this game is over. They were facing a rookie. When you are the ace of the staff your team is almost certainly facing one of the opponent's best pitchers every time you pitch. Tough s***.
  8. QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 30, 2012 -> 10:51 AM) I won't really make anything out of it either, but AJ did get a day off this Tuesday and against Kuroda who has held righties to a .220 avg this yr it doesn't bode well for us having Flowers behind the mound. Is he joining Henry Blanco behind the mound?
  9. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 11:11 PM) Ya I know, its just kind of a bummer that the guy who actually shoot a kid with a BB gun got no felony while I, the driver of the car did. I was 18 at the time. That sounds strange.
  10. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 02:02 PM) How does 1 get an assisting a criminal charge if the guy he "assisted" didnt even get a felony...Is assisting a criminal even a felony?? Aiding and abetting type crimes are punishable in the same manner as the underlying offense.
  11. Looked like a pretty wide strike zone being called. That plays well for Axelrod and they took advantage. That works for me.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 24, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) They are either trying to prove he is healthy or we asked them to play him. I can't imagine a team playing a guy on request where he is an injury risk.
  13. So after years of avoiding facebook...i've joined facebook.
  14. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jun 21, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) Good Lord. I just read that he was prepared to testify. I can't fathom why he wasn't called. He probably came forward after the prosecution rested. He would have been used if Sandusky testified to how much he cared about his children, etc.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 01:29 PM) Its complicated. Something across state lines should almost always be federal jurisdiction. But there is a possibility that there was some state law "illegal transportation of a minor" that could potentially bar the federal claim. Without seeing a federal complaint, its impossible to guess whether double jeopardy would be a problem. I also wouldnt be so sure that the federal govt will be the knight in shining armor. 2nd Mile had a lot of rich/famous people, the govt doesnt always want to go down that rabbit hole. Or at least not during an election year. Double jeopardy doesn't apply to different sovereigns. Regardless of the state laws, the federal suit can continue.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 11:51 AM) I still don't know how he could possibly have a successful defense without him on the stand, unless the old "protect penn state" happens to the jury.l Frankly, the defense was, first, to intimidate the witnesses (but that didn't seem to work) and, second, hope that the jury won't convict (which is still possible). Otherwise, it doesn't seem that they ever denied that the contact occurred.

    The Pet Thread

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 04:37 PM) Anyone have any experience with bark collars? We have a pug/shar-pei mix and she barks at pretty much anything that moves. When she is in the backyard she barks at the neighbors, the neighbor's dogs, people walking on the sidewalk, a leaf blowing by in the wind... When we take her camping with us she's almost as bad. We've even had our neighbors come over and meet her. They'll give her treats and she will literally wag her tail and bark at them at the same time. She's even barked at my wife and I if it's dark and she doesn't realize it's us walking towards her. I think it's partly a mix of excitement and her being very territorial and going into protect mode. She has never bitten anyone though. We've discovered that a spray bottle filled with water works ok when we are around to catch her. I know there are some collars that spray them so that's where I got the idea from. There are also the shock collars. I just want something so we can let her outside for 10 minutes or so and not have to be right there to keep her from barking at everyone and everything. Try a thundershirt first.
  18. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 12:56 PM) Really stupid question from somebody who is not tech savvy: I have a laptop and an HDTV. Is there a way to connect the two so that something I am watching on the laptop (such as mlb.tv) displays on the TV? If I can do this, it make me more likely to buy mlb.tv. If you have an internet enabled blu-ray it should get mlb.tv as well.
  19. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) Just curious if the victims sued PSU, they were also suing the state. Or if PSU and the State University system in Penn was a separate entity. I think the best answer is, yes, they will also be suing the state. Whether the victims will be able to recover against the state is more complicated. I imagine there will be a fight between PSU and PA to determine where any recovery will come from. I imagine, in the end, PSU will be paying out of their endowment.
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:08 PM) I think patent lawyers can make pretty good money, especially because you have to have a science degree to even take the patent bar, which eliminates a ton of competition. I have a friend making ludicrous money in patent law. Hates her life, but money is money. And there are few women in the field. There are so many patent law (and other IP) jobs that I'd recommend that anyone with a science degree should go to law school if they can't find anything else. It's the only thing I'd go to law school for if I knew what I know now.
  21. QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 06:09 PM) I have an engineering degree-and even I am questioning whether or not college was worth it. Due to some personal issues, I was unable to work or get an internship during the time in which I was enrolled. I have student loans to pay and no job. The great majority of the jobs that I find while job searching I don't qualify for because they ask for at least 5 years experience. I have found, while job searching, an average of one entry level engineering job in my field per month. I have applied to them and did not get any response. When I follow up, they tell me either they have already hired someone or they don't need any fresh grads anymore. I don't want to go to grad school because I don't want to go anymore in debt than I already am, but I feel that the economy is so bad that I'll be unemployed for over a year, and will not remember half of the stuff I learned in college. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't feel that I have borrowed too much for the degree that I have, but at the same time the degree is only a piece of paper if I have no job. I am starting to think that even though I have the brainpower to be an engineer, that I wasted the the time that I was in school. It seems that in this economy, a degree is just a piece of paper, and the only thing that matters is the fact that you are willing and able to work for virtually nothing(compared to the market for your profession) and that you have a ton of experience in your field. It also seems that there are not enough jobs to go around for those who are graduating college these days It seems everyone has a college degree now, and it doesn't matter what it is in, all that matters to employers is that you have some sort of work experience in the field that you are applying to. My response to that is "How am I supposed to get experience if no one will give me a chance when I don't have any?" Am I completely off base here? Volunteer. There has to be someone willing to take on an unpaid person for 20 hours a week or something. I know it sucks but since you don't have internships you won't have solid references (I'm assuming). It will be good for your job search, and maybe more importantly, your psyche.
  22. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 02:31 PM) Wow. Also...since this is a state university, can the state be held responsible? Meaning, could the victims sue the state of Penn.? It's actually some sort of quasi-state university.
  23. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) The Paterno will stuff is nonsense. Yes its rare, but not when they are a celebrity and they dont want the public to be able to pull their will and find out who they gave their money too. Or they have a will that merely says, everything to my trust and the trust isnt a public record. This I agree with and wanted to post a couple days ago. It's a real easy thing to attack, but the will doesn't have much information in it and the largest distributions would have avoided probate anyway. And remember, Paterno was alive when the scandal broke. If anything was in the will that would have been detrimental, he would have changed it.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 13, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) There's this new thing called Google. You should check it out. www.google.com I'm sorry, where do I find that?
  25. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 12, 2012 -> 08:04 AM) Apple's maps in iOS6 probably won't even be available until the iPhone5 is out...that will give 2 generations support for turn by turn (4S and 5). As it is now, NO iPhone gets turn by turn with the Google maps software they currently use...so I don't see how you can possibly pretend this is a negative. Currently, nobody gets turn by turn unless they buy a GPS specific app, such as Garmin, etc...for over 50$. After the change, 4S and 5 users will get turn by turn via built in maps software. Pretty sure the mapquest app does turn by turn. Of course, the app kinda sucks so I never use it.
