QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) Terrible idea. I'll probably regret this, but... I disagree. I think its an excellent idea. He'd be better defensively, have similar speed, way better offensively... I see no downside. Enlighten me.

This has been brought up in here multiple times before. I think maggsmaggs even has a club for it. Did you search for other threads?

The Ozzie Guillen Battleground Thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ozzie article from today's Trib (don't think its been posted yet, but I could be wrong): http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...i-sportsnew-hed I do see one thing that is interesting - Ozzie's tone is changing. He is starting to aim his ire and fire at the pitching, execution and the team in general now (as opposed to everyone else on the face of the earth). I saw this last year in September, and the team picked it up. I saw it this year in April or May, and the team picked it up. I am hoping this will happen again. -
QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 09:51 AM) Wait til next year. I'm surprised that you, of all people, just used that phrase.

Judge who presided over wiretapping case
NorthSideSox72 replied to EvilMonkey's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 09:39 AM) As little as it seems she still made a poor ethical choice. She should have, at the very least, told the parties involved about it and they could have requested she be replaced. Why? She was not directly involved with the litigants. Whats the conflict? If we are to go that far with every judge as to conflict, then no judge will ever be able to preside over any case, ever. Think not? Imagine you are lawyer or judge, and therefore part of all sorts of professional societies and charitable organizations. Consider every organization you are part of now or have been a part of. Now think of all the organizations that those organizations donated to or were connected to in some other way. What do you have there? You have a conflict with virtually every stance on every issue. Seriously. If this judge's organization was actually party to the suit, WHICH THEY ARE NOT, then you'd certainly have a case for conflict of interest. But they aren't. There is no foundation in fact for the accusation. -

Still in. I'll predict... we continue the up and down the rest of the season, and go on a run the last couple weeks, winning the wild card with about 95-97 wins. With that energy finally in place, we make our playoff run, sore bits and all. The only question is - when will they run out of gas, and when will the tiredness knock them back down. I'll guess we make the ALCS and lose.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 11:12 PM) Yeah Tex, I would think something like simple assault would be sufficient. Aggravated Assault would be about the max I would expect. Circumstances of aggravation are a little complicated. Usually for Ag Assault to be used, an assault has to occur with a special circumstance or instrument in addition to the act itself. An instrument would be a deadly weapon, for example, which this may or may not qualify for. A circumstance would be that the victim was a law officer (in most states, any assault or battery on a law officer automatically gets upgraded to aggravated). Not sure if this would qualify. Either way, Ag Assault could be a felony. Not sure this rises to that level. I'd go simple assault.

New Terror Threat: Violins On-Board Plans
NorthSideSox72 replied to Texsox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 08:39 PM) Noy having the musical ability to play a violin, is it really necessary to spend $57,000 on a quality instrument? I know there is a difference between say a $100 violin and a $1000 violin, but where does the added money stop adding value? I used to play tennis, and could tell the difference between a $50 K-mart special and a good $250 racquet, but there is a point where the added money just doesn't provide that big of a difference. Or is it just for 'status', like a rappers bling? I think you make a good point, and I think the analogy works well with lots of sporting equipment. And yeah, musicians are often concerned with appearance and status (yes, even classical musicians, who I've known a few of). But, like with sporting equipment, I think that it depends on what level you play at. To 99% of people, for example, anything above a $300 tennis racket will probably give you almost the exact same results. The extra thousand you pay for a $1500 racket only buys you a small sliver of improvement. But, if you are a high end pro, doesn't that small sliver make a difference? Even though it is very costly? -
Does this sound like a 'professional'?

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 11:12 PM) http://poynter.org/forum/view_post.asp?id=11749 This sounds like "you don't like us, so we won't care about you. " These are PEOPLE that were kidnapped, and just because they worked for FoxNews, there is no 'reservoir of good will'? What about basic human fu*king compassion? Bob Laurence, may you someday be kidnapped and be a non-story as well, you pissant waste of human flesh. Your inability to set aside your contempt and/or jealousy of a competitor speaks volumes about your soul. At DU, posters openly hope for their beheadding. You would seem right at home with the bottomfeeders there. His points are all correct - if embarrassing. Do you think he is trying to defend that fact? If he is, then I agree, that makes him pretty slimy. But I think maybe he was just reporting the fact, and not so much saying it was right. If that is the case, then be angry with the Beirut bureau reporters for ignoring the kidnapping - not this writer. DU? -
Judge who presided over wiretapping case

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 08:58 PM) http://www.judicialwatch.org/printer_5862.shtml So it seems that she is presiding over cases where a group she belongs to is one of the litigants. This seems ready-made for alot of appeals. Culture of corruption: its not just for Republicans. No, she isn't. Read the article more carefully, trying to detect the facts instead of the implications and hints. She is part of a charitable foundation, which happens to make donations to the ACLU, who happen to be party to the suit. She is NOT part of an organization who is party to the suit. A community organization makes donations to the ACLU? Big surprise. Culture of corruption my big hairy behind. Of course a culture of corruption exists, on both sides of the aisle - but this doesn't have the slightest bearing on that. Of all the stretches I've seen in here, this rises towards the tops. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 05:27 PM) One of my backpacking discussion lists got on waterproof stuff sacks versus pack covers. Have you ever left the pack cover at home and went with dry sacks? I always pack in zip lock bags, and have considered adding those white trash compactor bags to line the inside. But always take a cover. If I'm doing a trip on the water (canoe or kayak), or if I'm going somewhere that rain is unlikely (like the desert), then I just pack the stuff I need to keep try in waterproof bags (ditty bags, dry compression bags, or just trash bags) and forget about the pack cover. If I'm backpacking in a place where rain is semi-possible or likely, then I do the pack cover as well. This is twice in the last two days that you and I have hijacked a thread.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 04:08 PM) As a public service announcement. BYW snakes usually do not release venom when they strike humans. They need the venom to take down food. That bitof information will probably not be of much comfort if you gwt struck. Rattlesnakes are very pretty. I love seeing them in the wild. But I am sure you realize as much as anyone that the rules of first aid don't necessarily apply if you are in the backcountry, Mr. Big Bend. I'd recommend you carry a Sawyer Extractor Kit, soft constrictive bands, and some antihistimines. If you have room, chemical cold packs are handy too.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:44 PM) There are going to be a few idiots who blame Williams, but if the Sox fail to make the post season, IMO its ALL on the players and staff. Williams built a WS club, and ADDED to it in 06. Absolutely agree. I could make a list of at least 10 factors that may be contributing to the small (that's right, I said small, given we are still in a playoff position) gap between this team's performance and expectations. KW is not one of them.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 01:58 PM) Internal poll Here, so take with a grain of salt (usually there's some level of truth to internal polls that are relased, but only the good internals actually are released), but it is quite consistent with a recent Rassmussen poll showing the race dramatically tightening. I said it a few weeks ago. Ford will win. Book it.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 08:33 AM) What religion are we fighting for? We are "One Nation Under God". I guess all our actions are in the name of Christianity. I am sure you are aware that the "Under God" part of the pledge was added in the 50's by a red-scared Congress.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 02:27 PM) Once I even used a little duct tape on a small blister. Left it on for a couple days and it saved a bigger heel problem from forming. After one very rough trip, I actually fear blisters. Over Christmas break I am leading this trip to Big Bend Looks awesome. I've done desert hiking before - it can be a big challenge. If you have young scouts, that will be a serious trip for them. Make sure you have your 2 gallons per day.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) Most of the foot related problems I have seen are caused by wet feet, socks, and shoes. I always tell people I am leading that it is much better to take 5 minutes and take care of a hot spot then be hobbled by blisters. With the Scouts, I even go so far as schedule to foot break if we have a number of newbies on a trek. And if its just a hot spot, then the donut works great as protection.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) I usually do the moleskin donut, but honestly have been blister free for years (at least on my feet) Smartwool and poly liners with a pair of boots that just flat out fit my foot. When I bought them I thought they would be more for day hikes and knocking around in, but pressed them into service on an impromptu trip and love them. Timberland something or others I picked up at their outlet. They replaced some Merrils. What's the trick? OK... Cut a small hole or slit in the blister (towards the top or highest point versus gravity). Drain partially. Use an irrigation syringe or tube tip to re-fill the blister with Tincture of Benzoin (otherwise labeled as Benzoid Tincture). Seal the hole with something strong (stitch tape or similar), but leave otherwise uncovered. Sleep. Next morning, its a callous (sp?). WARNING: The benzoin will likely sting like hell for a few seconds. This is normal. I haven't had bad blisters in a while either, but it seems like someone always does on any given trek. Good socks and boots that fit and are seasonally-appropriate are key.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 10:40 AM) One First Aid lesson. There is almost no reason to "pop" a blister. Nature likes blisters, that's why we get them. Put a bandaid over it and cowboy up. Sort of. If its a blister on your foot and you are out hiking all day, sometimes its better to pop it under controlled circumstance. Even better, I know a great trick for foot blisters. Kind of gross though, and off topic. But if you want to know how to turn a painful blister into a hard callous overnight, I know the way.

NorthSideSox72 replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in 2006 Season in Review
Tonight is huge. Big. Gihugic. We win tonight, and I'll feel good about our chances the rest of the series. 3 of 4 would be good. Sweep would be gravy. 2 of 4... I'm back to nervous again. 1 of 4, and I'm pretty worried. Get swept... and its time to scrap our way to a wild card berth. Go JC!!!!!!! -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) Its still a really poor racial sterotype... I guess I took it a different way - more like "Ghandi... you may have heard of him" type humor, not a racial thing. But then again, like I said, poor choice of words. And before this goes any further, don't think for a second I am a defender of Hillary. She may in fact be at the bottom of my list for all candidates from both parties looking to run for Prez in '08. Or at least, really close.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) I'll cite this one, not sure it's the same he means. Linkity. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) she said something like "haha, Ghadi worked at a gas station". http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1052966/posts Biden said something like it too (this article also quote hilary) http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/...ogy_needed.html Hm. Not as bad as calling someone a monkey... but still a poor choice of words. Not that I needed much prodding to dislike Hillary anyway.
