  1. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) Macaca? wow, that is obscure. never heard that one before not nearly as good as Hilary's hilarious abuse of Indian immigrants. Not familiar. Source?
  2. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) How many muslims have denounced ANY terrorist act committed against the U.S., U.K., Spain, Israel, Germany, Indonesia, Italy. Any clerics? It is not limited, even though that soundbite plays well. That thinking will kill many more Americans. I have seen all sort of denouncing announcements. OK, that was a really weird combination of words. But its true. Anyway, I disagree. I think if we make it about religion, the whole world (us included) will see a lot more death and destruction. History shows us this pretty clearly.
  3. QUOTE(samclemens @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) sorry, i think that this predictable failure by the UN is not the US's fault, nor did we engineer it. it may hypothetically work out to our advantage that the UN proved once again how useless it is, but the UN will be the scapegoat here for a reason: they are worthless and completely ineffective. The UN is indeed ineffective. But that is not only due to its organizational nature - it is also due to the actions and inactions of the member nations. That includes us. In this case, most of the power countries on earth are to blame. They all decided it wasn't worth it to put together a plan for real peace.
  4. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 09:24 AM) You are serious right. These Madrassahs are just places of worship. Wahabbists are just your everyday muslims? Come on! That is exactly my point. The extremists are just violent people with a convenient excuse - the entire religion is not at fault (you targeted the entire religion, which is what I called you on). You may wonder why I consistently point it out when people apply violence to all of Islam. Its just bigotry - I don't have much tolerance for it. Be angry at the violence and those who cause it, not everyone who falls into one particular category with them. It is my firm belief that as soon as we get lazy with our anger and just point it at some billion-person slice of the world, that we lose all hope of ever gaining peace.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:24 AM) All this does is continue the trend we have been seeing since people realized how important TV was during the Kennedy debates. It just happens that more and more time is getting eaten away at by these mediums. It also continues the trend of electing the best actors instead of the best people for the country because of what they do when the cameras are supposed to be off, and how old or bad they look on TV. There is another side to that, though. The actors won when TV was becoming prevalent. And they continue to be. But... as the amount of their time is aired becomes so large that they can't possible prepare for it all, the curve starts to turn down on the actors. Instead, its those who, in the net, make the best image of themselves, who win. That may not be actors anymore, if there is no rehearsal for everything. Bush is a good example, I think. Good, bad or otherwise, he isn't much of an actor - that is for certain. WYSIWYG is the word for Dubya. And as we see more and more of him, in awkward and unrehearsed moments... we know see a lot of that smug frat boy, and we are all more than a little embarrassed by him. Even his former supporters.
  6. Cliffy was always a grinder out there. He seems like good people. I hope he recovers and does well again... maybe even for our Sox.
  7. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:56 AM) He could be a faster Shawn Casey. That sounds about right. In a full season, he could probably be a .290-.300 guy in avg, 15-20 HR. He'd walk less than Casey, but he'd steal a few bases.
  8. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 02:31 PM) Why was this girl murdered? Was it random? NO. It was because she wouldn't conform to islamic customs. Get f***ing real here would you. And no one has ever been murdered under the banner of Christianity? Please. My point is that religion isn't causing violence, whether Muslim or Christian or Jew. It is simply an excuse for the weak-minded to justify hatred and ignorance.
  9. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 02:21 PM) Italian police were searching yesterday for a man suspected of involvement in the killing of a Pakistani woman after her father and uncle were charged with slitting her throat because she dated an Italian man and refused to conform to an Islamic lifestyle. All together now: It is a peaceful religion. Yup. I know every time I see some whacko who happens to go to church kill someone in this country for some stupid reason (or actually kills them IN a church)... I think its because of their religion.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) Eh, I think the Civic'll still beat that in gas mileage. And obviously, I doubt many people here think I'm an SUV person anyway. But yeah, my plan is to hold onto this civic until the next generation or two of hybrids really hits the market, then hopefully make use of it as a trade-in. You're certainly right on the Civic. The VUE Hybrid is rated at 27/32, the regular Civic Sedan is 30/40. I actually use my car for a bit off off-road stuff, on occasion, to get to some backcountry spots. So I like having the room and the AWD.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 02:05 PM) I'm this close to buying an 06 civic... I'm thinking about Saturn's light-hybrid VUE, since it seems it will be 4-5 years before the really super-efficient hybrids hit the market. Differential cost is lower than normal hybrid, but you get a 20-30% boost in economy.
  12. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 01:25 PM) Al Gore is such a phony everyone needs to conserve! well, everyone except him and his elite pals (of course). i think if you want to get on your 'soap box' and preach about the enviroment you better be taking all the steps you are encouraging. exactly. i'm actually suprised the democrats on this board are defending Gore on this. he had one fact about a zinc mine wrong. not even close to a NY times or Dan Rather blunder. the main parts of the article were not retracted as far as i can tell. Are you serious? The article was wrong on the mine, wrong on the stock and wrong on solar cells (partially). That eliminates virtually every point they tried to make. The article was utter crap. As for the NYT, I am not sure which controversy you are referring to, but I didn't see the NYT publish any articles or even any op columns where virtually all the points in "fact" were incorrect.
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 11:14 AM) There are other pictures out there of people hanging "Made in the USA" signs on the rubble. Is that Iraq or Lebanon?
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:54 AM) The U.S. marines were only a portion of the UN force that arrived in the early 80's. But because they were the U.S., and they were marines, even though they didn't try to take sides in the conflict then, they wound up being direct targets. Which I just said the post before that - they'd be targets. Just like they are in Iraq. Except we have a better chance for success and peace in Lebanon, and a lot more help.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) The U.N. resolution calls for enlarging the force up to a maximum of 15,000. And there really aren't 100,000 troops available anywhere except China to be committed to that sort of peacekeeping mission. 15,000 won't be enough to achieve and maintain real stability for Lebanon. I remember saying this when all this started. If we want the Peacekeeping force to be successful, it can't be small like that. We'll just end up back down the same road. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:47 AM) The US is obviously contributing in adding logisticaly and financial support, so it isn't like they are neglecting the solution at all. I just think with the cultural sensitivies of the current enviornment of the middle ease right now, the less American faces in Lebannon, the better. I am sure we are, and that is good. And I do understand what you are saying. I just think a few thousand US troops, as a minority of a UN-led force, would not cause such a ruckus, and in the long run would make us actually look better.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:37 AM) I think that is more of a smart move than anything. How well would it go over to have US troops on the ground in another Arab country, especially one that just got done fighting with Israel. I don't think there would be any winners in that scenario. That's a good point, but I am not so sure that would be a problem. My only concern in that way is that our troops might be specifically targeted by some groups. But overall, if we were one twentieth of some 100,000 person force over there, that might work pretty well, even in terms of PR.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 10:29 AM) France throws U.N. Peacekeeping force into disarray, declines to contribute significant additional troops to the region. Hm. To me, the headline news in that article wasn't France - it was the US saying it was unwilling to contribute ANY ground forces. I can't say I'm happy about either one.
  18. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) Its just like anything. When you hold yourself up as a moral authority on anything, there are people who are going to make sure that you aren't hiding in a glasshouse. It doesn't surprise me at all, as this is done everyday... Just ask people like Pat Robertson. Then, as a journalist, you'd better have your information straight. Otherwise, you look like a fool, like this guy did.
  19. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:22 AM) I find the entire idea of child beauty pageants rather disgusting. There are plenty of sick people running around that don't need this kind of stuff out there provoking them even more. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Putting your child in a beauty pageant is like being that obnoxious parent at the Little League baseball game who yells and screams at the kids, because they are clearly trying to live out their own failed dreams via their child. Except, this a few times worse, because of the young age, danger from creeps and appearance-obsessed culture. Pathetic, really.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) That is interesting wording. His "father's stock" was sold off, did Al hold any, and did he sell it? Plus if his father was dead, how was it "his fathers stock"? Wasn't it then his stock? He inheriteded it right? Why not just say he sold that off? Plus it leaves a tec Also, why would it take Gore so long to actually divest the Zinc mine? He had already long since written his book, and was probably pretty far into production on his movie, not to mention he had already made his run for President. I think the idea was that his father owned the stock, and then when he died, the stock was in his father's estate. The estate then sold the stock. Doesn't sound like he ever owned it. But all this is nitpicking anyway. The article was weak in the first place, finding a couple small tidbits about Gore's non-green activities and trying to crucify him with them. Turns out they weren't even accurate. Pretty weak sauce. Gore appears to actually put his money where is mouth is, which I must admit, is more than I do for the environment. Kudos to Al on this topic.
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:26 AM) US stopped Iran from sending missles to Hezbollah Very nice. Good to see some good news once in a while.

  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 03:36 PM) Are you sure Ozzie sent him? If Pods just had the green light, that was 100% the perfect time to run. I said wait for 2 balls before the first pitch was thrown in that count. Ozzie also decided to PR for Thome. 2 moves there.
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 03:35 PM) BTW, Ozzie just got us a run with his managing... I was just about to post that.
  25. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 03:03 PM) -------------------------------- Really creepy:warning: pyshic sketch of Ramsey killer Doesn't seem to look much like him, other than the pencil neck. Different facial structure.
