  1. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 09:43 AM) We really should have included money on our sig bet. Eh, we'll see. I still think KC will be significantly better than last year when all is said and done.
  2. So, back on the thread's original subject... In case no one noticed last night... Cleveland lost, so... WE ARE ALONE IN FIRST FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR!!!!
  3. This was discussed in here a while back. As many people said then, I think its WAY too early to assess Bush's presidency from the broad historical perspective. While I am fairly certain he won't rank among the best, and I definitely disagree with many of his policies, I think we need to wait until one or two more Presidents have passed before having a solid idea on this.
  4. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:36 AM) Because as soon as you use prison labor, you have taken a job from a honest person and given it to a criminal. Which is why I prefer a guest worker program and allowing people who want the jobs to come here and work those jobs while earning citizenship. Regardless of what that countries' immigration laws are. I also favor a program to allow those who are already here to stay as long as they have not committed any crimes while in the US. I can understand that argument - not wanting to give away those jobs that someone who obeys the laws might take. So if they are being filled by legal immigrants or US citizens, great. But I still don't think amnesty is in order for illegals. By the nature of their situation, they have already broken multiple laws.
  5. QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) I DESPISE beans with a passion.. I will never eat them, ever Beans have no place in Chili, the best is when my mom makes chili and puts these like steak cubes in it on top of some noodles... oh man its the best but beans suck ass I also live in Texas if you needed a professional opinion Noodles? They let you do that to chili in Texas?
  6. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 07:03 AM) Here's something I just don't get. Instead of celebrating the fact that our society has advanced to the stage where our children can have careers that are more lucrative than toiling at unskilled, manual labor jobs, some seem to be proposing we should take a giant step back and raise Americans to work these jobs? Because if we don't want immigrants to do them, then it must be y'alls children. IMHO, we should be happy our children do not have to do these jobs. That a high school diploma moves them a couple steps up the job ladder. We also have made a college education within grasp of anyone with the resolve to go to school. We are paying big money for one of the world's greatest education systems and now some would have us turning out busboys, produce pickers, and lawn men. We are even insisting these workers get educated, we want them to learn English, even though many are illiterate in their own language. First generation immigrants have been doing these jobs forever, in every society. Those that come first hopefully provide a platform for their children to move ahead and grab hold of the American dream. Tex- While I do not agree with much of your stance on this issue, I do agree that we cannot expect to raise many new Americans to do these jobs. Just won't happen. That is why I support the guest worker program and other changes to the current immigration process. Here is another idea. If there is really that much low-pay, hard labor work needed to be done, maybe we can put our overburdened prison system to work on that. There are of course limitations to that, but I think it could be part of the solution.
  7. My version uses black beans. And it kicks some serious buttocks. But it ain't Texan, I suppose.
  8. Here is a thought. This Phelps moron, who says he is a Christian Fundamentalist, claims that God is punishing America for its values by killing their soldiers in Iraq. Isn't that pretty much the same thing the Islamic Fundamentalists are saying? These extremists are all the same. They are hateful, evil souls who need justification for their lack of humanity. Whether they where white robes with pointy hats, or a keffiyeh and an AK-47, they deserve no quarter. And I love the bikers. Great stuff. If I rode a motorcycle, I'd look to join in on any of their local appearances.
  9. QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 12:17 PM) This idiot Cubs fan tells me that the Sox only won the World Series b/c Buerhle tried to kill Travis Hafner when he hit him in the face. I tell him that if Cleveland felt that way, they'd have tried to take out someone on the Sox. Shut him up good. You are more obsessive about the Cubs than many of the Cubs fans I know.
  10. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) Yeah Iowa passed one saying they had to be at least 500 feet away, they were 530 feet away. This was on Hannity and Colmes last night and Hannity to this lady that she is one of, if not the sickest person that they have ever had on the show and that says a lot. Both Hannity and Colmes agreed on this and they usually don't agree on many things. These people go around the midwest protesting funerals I assume. What I wonder is do they even have a job or how do they pay for it. Maybe they use offerings from the church, I don't know. What is cool is, there is also a group of bikers (from IN I think) who follow the idoits around, and they put up a human wall to shield the funeral from the protestors.
  11. QUOTE(samclemens @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) well, even if no one else here saw that in the movie, it was good, and i would recommend checking it out, if not just for a peek into what it was actually like during the red scare in the 1920's and 30's. as for the rather analogy, i know i was reaching, so i guess i am paranoid. 1950's. There was no TV, of that sort, during the 20's or 30's.
  12. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 07:54 AM) Three baseball fans were on their way to a game when one noticed a foot sticking out of the bushes by the side of the road. They stopped and discovered a nude female dead drunk. Out of respect and propriety, the White Sox fan took off his cap and placed it over her right breast. The Yankee fan took off his cap and placed it over her left breast. Following their lead, the Cub fan took off his cap and placed it over her crotch. The police were called and when the officer arrived, he conducted his inspection. First, he lifted up the White Sox cap, replaced it, and wrote down some notes. Next, he lifted the Yankee cap, replaced it, and wrote down some more notes. The officer then lifted the Cubs cap, replaced it, then lifted it again, replaced it, lifted it a third time, and replaced it one last time. The Cub fan was getting upset and finally asked, "What are you, a pervert or something? Why do you keep lifting and looking, lifting and looking?" Well," said the officer. "I am simply surprised. Normally when I look under a Cubs hat, I find an asshole." I laughed at this, until it occurred to me that this means one would find Boobs under White Sox hats.
  13. QUOTE(samclemens @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 08:57 AM) I saw "Goodnight, and good luck" last night. the movie is about the reporter Ed Murrow's battle with joe mccarthy during the red scare. thought it was OK. we all know what clooney's political views are, but his spin wasnt out of control with this movie. however, i did catch one inferrence he was talking to that i was wondering if anyone else caught. seemed to me like he was making reference to dan rather's resignation, the way he portrayed murrow being amortized/phased out after he essentially beat mccarthy at his own game. or am i just paranoid? I saw it. Excellent film. David Strathairn was just downright spectacular, and he should have won the Oscar for that role. As far as the hint, I guess I don't see it, because that is pretty much what happened historically. Murrow was right though - a box with wires and lights. That is all it is, and has become little more.
  14. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 04:11 PM) 71 dollars a barrel .......what a bunch if crap! By this time next year, you will be ecstatic to see the price that low.
  15. I purchased 4 of those bullpen bar reserved table tickets from Chiguy79, and went to last night's game. I paid cash, at a negotiated price, and the transaction was all good. Tickets were for an EXCELLENT location, a reserved table with an unobstructed view, as advertised. So for those who were fearful that Chiguy79 was a broker, no need to worry. He is not, and he is legit. Its up to you how valuable those tickets are, since they are normally add-ons, but I felt it was worth it for a reserved table.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) The wild card in any projection right now is going to be housing prices. A huge fraction of the growth we've seen in the past few years has been due to Americans taking equity out as the prices of their homes increase. The housing sector as a part of the economy has basically made up for the collapse of manufacturing in terms of providing jobs that pay well, and the lack of any savings remaining for the average U.S. consumer means that the only $ that is left available is in home equity. If housing prices stagnate, then that will dominate almost everything else in the market, even if oil were to drop. If housing prices continue to rise, then the economy will be able to absorb the next oil shock as well as it has endured the shock from $20 to $70. Housing has already started to slow to flat or below, regionally, in the West and the South. Midwest and Northeast are still steadily growing. But the hug boom on housing is over, at the large scale level (all housing markets are local markets of course, so I am talking aggregated levels here). Therefore, something else needs to sustain the growth. My fear is that $71 a barrel oil isn't a top - its a stop. It will approach $100 this year, probably even go over here and there. Then it will rest back, and play around just below that level (at $80-$120 a barrel, various new sources of oil become viable). The market for oil will stay where it won't immediately prompt those new markets, but some will still open. Not enough to lower the price, though. So as much as I like this market right now, I am not as optimistic as others for the full year.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) We could build a wall for that. No wall. Please. So many negatives to doing that.
  18. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 10:07 AM) Do you people advocating deporting 12 million plus people realize how logistically ridiculous that is? A more common sense approach would be much better. If you do this right (guest worker program, fines on employers of illegal aliens, and enforce the immigration laws on illegals on an opportunity basis), you do not have to deport anyone. They will go on their own, in order to get in line for the jobs. They do it for us.
  19. QUOTE(Brian @ Apr 18, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) Throw him in prison for life. He probably wants to be put to death so let him go to jail and let him get the s*** kicked outta him every day. Unless he is put in permanent isolation, he will be killed in prison. Book it. Not that I will shed any tears, but that is the reality.
  20. Something to note here... 2 players were arrested this morning. And the report from the Doc that checked the alleged victim said that, although no DNA was found, there was evidence of rape. Just not evidence that can be attached to any one person.
  21. OK, here is my question about BA. Has anyone else noticed that fraction-of-a-second hitch? It looks to me like he sets, strides, and then pauses for just a hair of a second... then swings. And that little hesitation puts him behind all the pitches. Anyone else notice that? Maybe he is trying too hard to read the pitches and figure them out, instead of going more on instinct. I don't know. But there is definitely a weird pause there.
  22. That is HILARIOUS. Especially if you saw the thread with the slumpbuster quote from Steff in it (which some people didn't even catch).
  23. I'll reiterate what I've said all along... Indians are good, but not as good as last year. Tigers are improved but still very inconsistent. Twins are much worse than last year (I really don't get the Twins love on this board), and will be lucky to play .500 ball. KC is improved, but much like the Tigers, they will be inconsistent. Overall, the division is much tighter than last year. Sox win the division, then Indians in a close second (so I guess they scare me most). The other three teams will be closely packed around the 80 win mark, battling for 3-4-5.
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 08:10 PM) There's really no question that he's the best defensive outfielder on the Sox... Not sure I agree with that, at least not to say "no question". JD has turned into a pretty darn good RF, and I think people aren't noticing. He probably couldn't play CF as well as Anderson, but I think I'd say Dye is as good a right fielder as Anderson is a center fielder. Of course, it is only two weeks into the season, so we'll have to look at this again later.
  25. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Apr 17, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) Including an amendment to help create a standard for communications equipment for first responders that would allow all first responders to communicate with each other during times of emergency. Not sure of the exact verbage of this amendment, but there is already a standard in place of that nature. Sort of, at least. There is a Unicom air freq (121.5) for air ops, and there is a universal law enforcement cooperative frequency (somewhere in the 140 band I think) which virtually all departments can get to (but not necessarily all handheld radios). EMS and Fire usually have access to that 140 band general freq as well, I believe. In my experience, the problem is often not a matter of standards, but a matter of planning and cooperation. Communications equipment is a key piece of that, but you need local and regional response plans and contact trees that are known and viable across regions.
