  1. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 05:05 PM) Southsider, I do not think that is the problem the current bill is addressing. If you are worried about highly sophisticated personell entering the US, no amount of border patrol is going to stop them. Russian mobsters, IRA members, etc have funding. When you have funding, you can fabricate the necessary items to cross into the United States and no amount of security in the world is going to stop it. Im not suggesting to just open the doors and let everyone in with out keeping tabs. Im suggesting that we let everyone in, and the ones we let in we keep track of. That way it is easier for the US to be on the look out for the terrorists, instead of just the people who want to enter the country. In the end, I guess I try and err on the side of allowing people in. I know that is dangerous, but that is what I feel America stands for. It is dangerous that our criminal system is "Guilty until innocent" or that the burden of proof is "beyond a reasonable doubt", but I am of the opinion our country was founded that way because it is better to let 100 criminals go free than wrongly convict 1 person. Its not easy to walk the path of the United States, the greater part of world history has been dominated by societies that were far different than our own. While I disagree with your conclusion, you make some excellent points.
  2. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) The problem is that for the last thirty years, the US has had an immigration policy which encouraged the illegal immigration that we're fighting now. The reason? We allowed businesses to draw illegal workers in - and those are the ones who should be punished. I realize that the people who cross over illegally are breaking a law. But at the same time, if these people have been living responsibly and being good neighbors in the community in which they live, I see no reason to punish people to the point of uprooting someone from their home of several years or even decades. Make them pay a fine, sure - but deportation does not have to be the only method of punishment. That is certainly part and parcel - enforcement needs to also be directed at companies and individuals already patriated. That would decrease demand for illegal workers.
  3. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 03:50 PM) There is a great irony that today we sit at a fork in the road, where ex-immigrants are trying to make it harder for future immigrants. No matter how high and mighty I may become, I will never forget that if it were not for the leniant immigration policies of the 19th and 20th century, my family may never have had the chance to come here. So give us your tired, your hungry, your poor, because it is the American way to accept them. Let them take jobs, let them compete, because that is American. It is only those who are lazy, those who are drains on society that fear the immigrants. Because can an immigrant that can not speak my language, that has not gone to high school, college, etc, really compete for my job? The answer is no, and the reality is not one illegal immigrant has ever taken a job that I have wanted. They take jobs from those who are no longer deserving, because they will work harder and for less. Its time to stop crying and asking for a bigger govt to come and protect us. Very nice post, sir. But I would contend that I am not trying to make it harder for immigrants - I am trying to make it easier. Because someone who sneaks across a border (any of our borders) illegally and undocumented is not an immigrant - they are a trespasser. More visas? Great. Guest worker program? Excellent. Allowing people to enter our country completely unknown to us? Not acceptable.
  4. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) Ah, yes, excellent point. I agree and am all for tougher security, just not a huge, imposing, expensive wall that serves to completely block us from a neighboring country. Effective border security can be achieved without a physical wall. A wall would not only be incredibly expensive and symbolically hateful, it would cause an environmental disaster. Instead, I'd suggest that technology is our best bet. Motion sensors, cameras, aircraft with FLIR, patrols with military-style sighting equipment, satelites... all these can be used to target and address any attempts at illegal border crossings. And while I clearly do not have the numbers available, it seems to me it would be a lot less expensive than a giant wall running thousands of miles.
  5. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 02:09 PM) From Star Magazine's April 24 issue: On April 7, when Britney Spears and Kevin Federline realized that their baby, Sean Preston, had been sleeping more than usual, panic bells went off. Just six days earlier, the 7-month-old had taken a major fall from his high chair, a tumble that had his parents worried that he might have been critically injured. They had every right to fret. After rushing Sean to a nearby hospital, they discovered he had a minor skull fracture (sometimes called a "scalp fracture" in babies), and a blood clot. And the doctors weren't the only ones to take notice! The next day, the Department of Children and Family Services began looking into the incident. THE FALLOUT The Spears-Federline clan escaped disaster, but not their obligation to explain themselves to the authorities. On April 8, L.A. sheriff's deputies arrived at Britney's Malibu home to investigate a child-abuse claim against Britney and Kevin in relation to the head injury. Such an investigation isn't unusual. According to California law, whenever a baby is brought into the hospital with a serious injury, the Department of Children and Family Services is alerted. http://www.starmagazine.com/news/61975 So... your baby falls out of a high chair, badly enough that you are worried about it being a "critical" injury... and you don't bring the child to the hospital until 6 days later?!?! Who are these people?!
  6. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 08:34 AM) SS2k5, as concerned about national security as you seem to be based on other posts, the irrelevant snark you posted in response to Tex seems out of character. While SS's article did contain some snark, it is highly relevant, and makes some excellent points. I stand by SS2K5 on this one. No matter your feelings on increasing visas or allowing a migrant/guest worker program (which I am in favor of), there is just no justification for illegal entry into another country. Nothing positive comes of it.
  7. Its a flag. Its a piece of fabric. Yeah, its also a powerful symbol. But its still just fabric. Thats my feeling on this. Someone wants to be stupid about it? Fine. Who cares? If I see a US flag burning, I can still sleep at night knowing that this act does absolutely NOTHING to my country. It does nothing to weaken it, or make it less appealing to me. My country still stands for all the same things, good bad and otherwise. Therefore, I am not offended, or even effected in any significant way. Go on. Burn a flag. See if I give a damn. If thats all you can do, then I'm fairly sure you are no threat to me.
  8. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 06:55 PM) ^^^ We're still under .500, and haven't won a game that started or ended on Sunday or Monday. We suck!!!1 We've won ALL our games that started or ended on a Sunday or Monday.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 09:21 AM) I tried on a couple of their packs and they just don't seem to fit me. After suggesting to all my Scouts that Alps Mountaineering would be a great first pack (they offer great Scout discounts) I tried one and it is the best fitting sub $200 pack I've ever tried. My Gregory is still near and dear to my heart and if I meet up with the bastard that stole it, he will suffer. Pack brands are like shoe brands - its all about body type (or foot type).

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 08:43 AM) merkin = a crotch wig, invented in the mid-15th century and employed originally to hide syphilitic pustules. Well... I guess now we have the answer to the question that pops into all of our heads when we hear Dubya speak: what the heck is a 'merkin'?

  14. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 05:55 PM) That depends on whether or not he's swinging for the fences again this year like he did last season. So far, he's not. He seems pretty dialed in, actually, and looks pretty good at the plate.
  15. A week into the season, and I am still pretty much sticking with my same view of the AL Central.... The Sox have improved as a team, though they weren't there mentally for a few games. The Indians will be good, but not as good as last year. The Twins will be awful, and so far they are. Tigers and Royals will be improved teams, and they are showing it, though they will both fade down the stretch. Finish will likely be: CWS, CLE, DET, KC, MIN (although DET/KC/MIN will all finish close to each other, hovering at or a little below .500).
  16. QUOTE(TLAK @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 02:53 PM) The outfield defense was also a big factor today. It was Friday night too, but for the opposite reason. Nice to see that trend reverse itself. Defense has looked pretty solid, for the most part, the last 2 games.
  17. As I said in the other thread that went this way, the idea of any sort of "limited" war, or just air strikes, is idiotic. Iran will respond militarily, they border Iraq, Afghanistan, and are a very short distance from Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain... the result would be a large scale war, and that is the last thing we want right now.
  18. Note my Sig Bet. We gave the game away last night, but KC will not be the 100-loss door mat they were last year. That said, I think the Sox are likely to bring down the hammer on KC today and tomorrow.
  19. Not only am I not overly concerned yet about this team... I am not overly concerned yet about Garland. I feel like I watched a different game last night than some other people did. I saw a game where Garland picthed not-that-great, but easily half the runs he gave up were due to our poor defense more than his pitching. And that defense is something that can be addressed by getting the team's heads in the right place, which I have confidence Ozzie will do. Jeez. And I thought the Gload thread was bad.
  20. Let me get this straight. After Ozuna butchered not one, but two easy fly balls last night and turned them into extra base hits that led to runs... and Gload played out there, briefly, just fine... people are asking about replacing Gload? As opposed to Ozuna? When Gload is the better bat? What a screwed up thread. The whole team looked lousy on D last night anyway, not just Ozuna, but also Iguchi, Konerko, Widger... replacing Gload or Ozuna serves no purpose at this point. The team needs to get their heads back in it. And we need to play Mack and Gload as the backup OF's, and Ozuna should be relegated to 3B, PH and PR.
  21. We used to be able to see who else was on a given forum - now that went away. Anyone know why?
  22. QUOTE(SoxPride56 @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 07:38 AM) We should maybe have a thread for all ex-white sox players, and how they are doing...just an idea... There is one in PHT, unless it was moved.
  23. QUOTE(The Critic @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) If I was at home right now, you'd have an answer. My wife loves that piece. I'm sure she knows who composed it. All I know is that Ministry used it as an intro on the opening track of Houses Of The Mole. Thanks - thats a start. Now I just need to find someone who owns that album. I'd buy it, but I'm not a fan of Ministry (they went to my high school, by happenstance). If you happen to remember to check when you get home, I'd be appreciative.
  24. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) I threw out an option to him. If it's not a viable option for him he can tell me himself...unless you're his wife and I didn't know. You were needling. Again. Got off my side! And what is up with that Avatar?
  25. Ok, I know this is an old thread now, but I have to ask a question... The video montage that was new for this year (they played it Sunday Opening Night), the one BEFORE the Pirates-music one that they played all last year... anyone recognize the music? Sort of subdued, orchestral stuff, not as energetic as the Pirates music but still very cool. I'm a bit of a soundtrack fan, and I know classical music pretty well, but I didnt recognize it. Anyone know what that music was? I'd really like to know.
