QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 09:16 AM) Link Obama scolds Bush on environment, energy proposals Senator calls plans `not a serious effort' And he's right. The budget doesn't fund the plan. And even the plan itself is lacking. Its amazing to me how little we hear about this issue. There are few things more important that the damage were doing to our own environment (and to ourselves in the process), and our dependence on foreign energy.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 11:30 AM) We don't have the option of "staying the course" either. We've done that and that is failing. What we have to do, is fulfill our responsibility to the people of Iraq. Which we aren't doing. That is why I added the sentence immediately after.

FEMA worse off now than during Katrina.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 09:51 AM) Surprisingly...no. That's just on my list of likely disasters in the next decade or two. The demolition of New Orleans was at the top of that list before it happened. Now we've got the obvious ruptures along the San Andreas (within 50 years, there will be major quakes in both S.F. and north of L.A.), a Hurricane hitting a major east coast city, a tsunami in an area the U.S. is't prepared for, a major quake along the Cascadia megathrust (almost certain within the next 0-500 years), etc. The probability goes down for some of them, but they're still possibilities. There isn't likely to be a major collapse in the Azores tomorrow, but if it happens, there's nothing left of the Eastern seaboard, for example. I know, its a possibility. I was just giving you crap. I agree that all of those are strong possibilities. You can add to that list major volcanic activity in the Cascades, Utah, Wyoming or New Mexico. The USGS did a broader report about possible activity in the next century, highlighting the current activity and likely risk levels for volcanoes. There are quite a few possibilities, even in that short time span. I can't find the PDF at the moment. And I heartily agree that we are just not even close to ready for any of these possibilities. Plus the non-natural events. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 05:30 PM) Of course...if a Hurricane were to go after New York...all bets are off. You've been watching those silly Weather Channel "It Could Happen Tomorrow" shows, haven't you? -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) Well, I do understand the principle of why the government would want this law...but it's also worth noting that the argument that employers won't hire anyone because they can't fire anyone is at least controversial economically. Here, for example, is a study which suggests that high levels of "employment protection" may have only a limited impact on the economy...by ensuring that skilled workers are able to have or keep jobs, these sorts of laws can wind up distributing wealth more widely and avoiding large losses of employment. Several countries have tried moving from systems more like France to those more like the U.S., and have done so without seeing large gains in employment. The data are still in debate, as an IMF study a few years ago found the opposite. France has a few other major problems too, including things like unemployment benefits which last for something like 3 years, which is an even more obvious impediment to job creation, as people can sit around & collect $ from the government without having a need to find a job. Most of the data you show here is for retention. The unemployment rate for young people in France is something like 25%, according to newscasts I have seen, so this isn't about retention - its about increasing jobs. Employers will take chances if they need staff, and lowering the risk bar will assist in more people being hired. Seems pretty logical to me. These kids are rioting against their own best interests, AND employers' best interests AND government's best interests. Its bizarre. Its illogical. Its French.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 07:51 AM) It's also terrible policy. Us leaving doesn't stop us from being a recruiting tool. Us staying doesn't stop us from being a recruiting tool. Us being seen as a positive force in the region - stopping poverty and helping to build a strong Iraq does. Unfortunately, nothing we've done in that arena has stuck - yet. Before John Kerry ran for President in 2004, he was a good Senator - a responsible Senator, now he just grandstands. I agree with all of this. The Iraq ware was a mistake, but once we invaded, we had no other choice but to stay the path. We have to do a lot more work before we acn leave. And yeah, Kerry went downhill when his Prez campaign got into gear.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 05:04 PM) I agree that the suit was ridiculous. But since when has it been acceptable to call people names as long as you're "pushing them to excel?" Oh the coach may indeed be a jerk. But that is no reason for a $3million payout.

QUOTE(Dan @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) good video post! the fly by was unbelieveable! i was sitting in right field and it was somethin else to see those F/A-18s fly past. later on in the game, i headed up to get a drink and saw the two air force pilots who did the fly by sortie. i shook that captains hand and told him it was unreal. we spoke briefly, and i just told him that we could see the jets fumes comming outta the afterburners and that they came in right ontop of the hardeck. real friendly guys. it was cool to see all the service men and women there last night. Um... the Air Force doesn't fly F/A-18's, which are navy jets - the pilots would have been Navy or Marines. http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/aircra...apr06.html#Illi And where the heck did those pilots come from that they could go home, land, de-gear, and get to the park again during the game? I think perhaps the air force pilots were pulling your leg. But yes, it was great to see all the military uniforms. Great experience for men and women of all services, some of whom were in from other parts of the country. -
QUOTE(G&T @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 03:23 PM) It was his daughter so I think it was easy. The fact that it was his daughter is all the more telling about the obnoxious personalities involved. With all the stories of frivilous lawsuits out there, its nice to see a judge put their foot down and tell the plaintiffs to get real: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060403/ap_on_...softball_suit_1 $3 million for that? Are you kidding me?!

QUOTE(GoTribe @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 01:53 PM) From the perspective of those on the Eastern Time, I think a majority went to bed. I for one figured it should've been called and replayed today or tomorrow afternoon, but its not my opinion. Nevertheless I saw a lotta pop in the Sox lineup, I saw a lot of mistakes on the Indians part, bullpen killed us. And truthfully I thought we had no chance yesterday when the rain came, I just figured there is no way we can go and win in this city, this atmosphere, this late at night. Let's hope, from an Indians Fan, the W is next to the wigwam tomorrow.. Good to see an Indians poster, and one who isn't a troll or a blowhard. Thanks for posting. Of course, we still hope to kick your guys' butts Tuesday.

QUOTE(TheDudeAbides @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) Yeah, it felt like that thing was gunna crash into us!! I've been to a bunch of air shows, I've been to some events with flyovers, and I've been up close with military jets before (have a buddy who flies Hornets). And I have NEVER seen a flyby like that, where serious jets were that close to the crowd. They seriously could not have been more than a hundred feet above the light standards. It was really amazing. People were all sort of rattled by it in the upper deck. -
QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) I saw the banner ceremony, but a question of mine is what about the FLAGS? There's usually one for Divisional, American League and World Championships, right? Have THEY been put up yet? I'm fairly sure that the banners ARE the flags. THe banners are pictures of flags, you may notice. And the actual flag polls now have an array of past Sox logos.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 09:14 AM) Then, by God, TEACH the students the proper way to display the flag. TEACH them the proper use of the flag. TEACH people. That's your job. Banning the flag of the United States of America is a hideous response. The guy should be fired. I completely agree (well, maybe not with the guy actually being fired for it). Like I said, I don't agree with the ban. I just wanted to make sure people actually knew what was going on.

AND THAT’S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
NorthSideSox72 replied to greasywheels121's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Pre-game stuff ROCKED. Those jets were REALLY low, not more than a hundred feet above the light standards. For those that weren't there, you cannot imagine how loud they were. Game rocked. Anderson ROCKED, I must say, and I am a certified Anderson doubter. Thome... Oh my man, Thome. The crowd rocked, especially those few thousand who stuck it out - even the ESPN announcers said it. Go. You. White. SOX!!!!! -
The "lucky" argument for the Sox winning it all last year is so absurd, its laughable. These same statheads who just cannot fathom why their stats said the Sox didn't win, fail to see the obvious, most reliable stat there is - W. The Sox were in first for all 162 games, and then went 11-1 in the postseason. That is about 2000 innings of baseball, tens of thousands of at bats, and millions of individual events. What does everyone know about stats? That the bigger the sample size, the more reliable the measure is. After millions of individual picthes, bounces, throws, bases, catches, hits and everything else... LUCK IS EVENED OUT!!!!! The Sox won in 2005 because they were the best team in baseball. If your pet stat(s) doesn't tell you that, then maybe you need to re-think your pet stat(s).

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) wtf these people are morons. political correctness out of control. according to the principal the american flag is used as a symbol of "ethnic intimidation, harassment and blatant bigotry" :headshake http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/loca...88152%2C00.html Your paraphrasing from the article is wholly inaccurate. The principal said, if you read carefully, that the flag WAS BEING USED to intimidate, by students. And it was. He said nothing incorrect, and was not saying the flag symbolized anything evil in general. His EXACT quote: "The flags no longer were being used as symbols of patriotism or of cultural heritage, but of ethnic intimidation, harassment and blatant bigotry," Stumpf said. And, for those of you who fail to actually read the article, let me help to make sure you aren't mislead. The American flag still flies over the school, and in classrooms. The ban is only for students wearing or flashing a flag, ANY FLAG OF ANY NATION, in the school. This is one of the reasons why message boards are dangerous. Someone misquotes or misrepresents something as fact, and then everyone reading it assumes its true. :headshake There's your headshake. BTW, I am not saying I agree with the ban. But I really hate when people try to enflame others by manipulating facts. And besides, clearly, the students were indeed using the flags to intimidate people.

So, Chris Widger pulled up lame after trying to leg out a hit in yesterday's game in Atlanta. I have looked around on the web a bit, and I can't find any follow up. Anyone know what happened? Is it a big thing or a small thing? Is he healthy for Opening Series if needed?

QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) It never rained here where I live downtown. Also just checked the radar and it looks as if it is all broken up and went right by downtown. I also do not see any rain in the future. We got some rain in Bucktown, just a wee bit north o' downtown. National weather service put out a statement just a few minutes ago that a wave of thunderstorms will come through the area around later afternoon. Tom Skilling is saying scattered storms, some severe, throughout the afternoon and evening. Temps will hover from 50 to 65, depending on where you are in the area (50 north shore, 65 SW burbs), through the afternoon.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 11:29 AM) Quick question for anyone who cares to answer: I'm coming from the south. I can still take the Dan Ryan, and get off at 35th (or Pershing, or 33rd) correct? I know it'll be a pain in the ass, but I'm leaving early enough and preparing for a long trip. I wouldn't even try it. Seriously. Take something else - anything else. LSD, Ashland, Archer, whatever. Just avoid the Ryan. I've already seen backups this weekend - the Kennedy was clogged up inbound as far north as Fullerton because of it.

86% of Cailifornia without earthquake insurance
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in SLaM
I am really, really surprised that mortgage banks are not requiring it in CA, as well as anywhere else in an earthquake-heavy area (along the Pacific coast, in the New Madrid region, the Upper Hudson valley, etc.). I had it when I lived in Memphis, because of New Madrid. I checked, at that time, with my homeowner's insurance company (USAA), and they made it clear that the earthquake rider covered any damage resulting from a quake, even if the damaging element wasn't the quake itself (i.e. mudslides from the quake, etc.). That is the key to an earthquake rider. If you get that rider, make sure it will cover the entire cascade of earthquake-caused events, not just the earth opening up. That is where the "scams" come into play - that technicality. That happened with Katrina - hurricane insurance didn't necessarily cover flooding, even if caused by a hurricane. USAA is a really good insurer (and not for-profit, they are a co-op), though, so I'm a bit spoiled. But I highly recommend to everyone that if you have a particular high-risk event in your area, that you check the exact conditions for payment. -
Opening Day... Heck Yeah! We'll be in 522 Row 1 screaming like a bunch of kids on sugar highs when they raise that banner. Rain? I laugh at your rain. Bring it. Last game in Chicago last year was 40 and raining. 50's and a chance of storms they say for today? Ha! We'll be ready. Of course, if they do cancel it, I sure as heck hope the game becomes Monday NIGHT, not Monday during the day. I can't leave work Monday afternoon. Grrrrrrrrr...

Rick Morrissey calls out his own bosses

QUOTE(TheHawkaroo @ Mar 31, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) Yeah I don't see why they would sell it unless they were REALLY desperate. The Cubs are a money-making machine. Newspaper sales may be down but over-priced cub tickets are not. I Think they would only sell if they had to, if they were in debt and about to go under. The Cubs appear to not be such a money-making machine, if Forbes is right. Baseball teams, even successful ones, don't make tons of profit.
