  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) Then why the Hell wasn't he bunting yesterday in the 7th? And what the hell was he thinking while trying to field that double? On the second part, I don't think that was necessarily IQ, that was just a plain old misread. Pods had lots of those, Pierre I've seen have a few too, but not as many.
  2. I have a good feeling about Peavy inthis game. I think he gets back on track. Just need the offense to show up. For the love of g*d, please either give Pierre the day off, or drop him to the 9 slot, at least until he can get it going. Its killing the offense having two slumping hitters at the top of the order.
  3. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Apr 20, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) I'm tickled that you ride to work on knobbies. I don't think I would enjoy that, but I see why you do it. I try to ride to work once/week. Have not for a couple of weeks, though. Starting tomorrow. Tuned up the bike last weekend. That will get me two days this week, then I should be full time starting next week. Psyched for it!
  4. QUOTE (Felix @ Apr 28, 2010 -> 08:29 AM) Hrm.. he leaves a job with the Timberwolves front office to be a head coach for Iowa State? That sounds a bit odd. Probably a good pay raise, though. Good for him.. always seemed like a nice guy. Why is it odd? He is a gamer, wants to get closer to the action, and he grew up in Ames. Seems like a perfect fit for him.
  5. Very nice. I went to school with Freddy, played ball with him a few times, got to know him a little bit through some volunteer work he was doing. Class guy, smart, knows the game... I think he might be a very good head coach some day. But we'll have to see.
  6. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 08:42 PM) That's a good point, actually. Personally, I don't get too excited about stuff like this, ... with that said, though, don't take my PERSONAL freedom away to pray or not to pray. The rest is a stupid arguement, really. You really think so? I don't see it that way. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 06:40 PM) True. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) Okay, but at what point should the government not interfere with (insert X here). Who are you, and does kap know you have his SoxTalk sign-in?
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2010 -> 06:16 AM) Mexico issues travel alert over new law http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100428/ap_on_..._us_immigration So this brings up an interesting question. How is a cop supposed to know the difference between a tourist who shows a passport or visa, and an illegal alien who shows the same thing? They have no way of checking their status through customs, without having a customs agent present. That's another potential problem here.
  8. Its Phil Rogers, but, I couldn't not post it. Enjoy. If the Sox can actually manage to get back above .500 and in the race, then you can add Fielder to the A-Gon/Berkman/??? talks for the Sox. Of course, they still have a ways to go before they are even really in it again.
  9. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 06:02 PM) Andrew Dobies has been promoted to Charlotte to take Santeliz's spot on the roster, who was put on the DL. Ramon Castro is starting a rehab assignment with Charlotte. Charlis Burdie was promoted to B'ham along with Tyson Corley. Leroy Hunt was activated from the DL, Winston-Salem has a open roster spot. So bizarre to me - why Corley and Burdie, who are borderline prospects at best, over Bellamy and Remenowsky?
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) I really think Gilmore would be more of a threat up at the plate than Kotsay right now...sad as it is to admit. Absurd. Kotsay is a major league hitter, Gilmore is still multiple years away from being ready. He happens to have a hot hand right now, but let's not get ridiculous. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) Second the notion about Hudson...never really saw him as "special" pitcher or even in the same league as Brandon McCarthy, and the prospects ratings have similarly "dissed" him. Eh? Most prospect ratings didn't "diss" him at all - some had him a top 10 in all of baseball, others more in the 20's or 30's, but all see him as having significant major league potential. Where are you getting this? QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) Not a great start to the minor league season, except for pleasant surprises like Gilmore, Nathan Jones, Shelby, Salvador Sanchez...the only REAL positive is the Trayce Thompson development process, which will end up being more interesting than the major league roster unless KW guts it. Morel, also has looked very solid from everything I've read and heard. And Danks has started out hot again like he did in 2009, but EVERYONE's convinced he might strike out too much to ever be more than a 4th outfielder, or better hitting version of BA with a little bit more excitement/athleticism to his overall upside. Hopefully Dayan starts to get on a little tear after the breakout game. Escobar's a field gem but we'll have to wait and see how his bat holds up at the upper levels of the system. You earlier say that Gilmore is better than Kotsay right now, and then you say the only real positive is Thompson? Seriously? This happens every season. Players come in and their early performance is not what people expected. Its only a couple or three weeks into their season anyway, and there are always question marks. There are multiple guys who are surprising on the up side - everyone you mentioned, but also Bellamy, Shirek, Greene, and others. Just like there are guys surprising on the down side. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) Mitchell is down and out, Phegley, Hudson is struggling mightily, Gonzalez around .200, Johnny Nunez has fallen off the map, Santeliz is hurt...Flowers, half of the die-hard prospect people are convinced his swing's too long (the Josh Fields/Brian Anderson AAAA bat) and defensively....well, with AJ not hitting a lick, not ever throwing out runners and soaking up payroll AND the supposed best rotation in the AL looking pretty mediocre so far, there's nowhere but up as far as Flowers goes and our present level of performance from that spot. Mitchell and Phegley were definitely blows, but the other guys, you have to have some patience. Its still April.
  11. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 06:33 PM) Ok, this thread's grown by 4 pages, and I'm reading through. But, the police have to have someone detailed and can't just stop someone based on finding out their citizenship. See my responses to JIMB earlier. Its not about getting to the suspicion part that is the real problem. Its what happens after that.
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 06:30 PM) What's up with Hudson? 1 inning 8 hits 9 runs 9 earned 1 walk 2 k 2 hr 9.37 ERA. I hope his arm is ok. Yikes, I hope so too. Maybe he's working on something? I hope? McCulloch not much better in relief, 3 runs in 3 innings. Castro in his rehab game: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI Gartrell 3-4, HR, 2B, now hitting .316 Flowers takes the golden sombrero
  13. W-S wins again, this time 6-4. Greene 3-3 raises his avg to .316, Gilmore still on fire goes 4-5 to raise his avg to .397, Bour hitting .444 since his signing. Leesman struck out 8 in 5.2 IP, but also gave up 3 ER on 5 H. He's been kind of all over the place lately with his various numbers. Rem 1.1 IP hold, Santiago a weak inning, Infante 1 IP save.
  14. With AJ hitting as he is, I sort of get playing Lucy. But why sit Teahen here, when he's got a good bat going? Makes no sense to me, unless Teahen is nursing an injury.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) Phoenix has bids in on both 2012 political conventions. I think we know exactly how that will go.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) Unfortunately that isn't actual evidence. Its evidence, its just not as solid as you'd want it to be. I've followed this one a bit. It really does disturb me. Y2HH is right that you should not apply this to all cops and judges. But the defendant in THIS CASE, sure as heck seems to have gotten away with one here, and it makes me ill.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 02:33 PM) via Newsweek Careful. Tendency is not the same as all, and having one problem in the group doesn't mean the entire group's message is corrupt. Its no surprise that, especially as the Tea Party has been co-opted to become the We Hate Obama Party, that it has attracted the right wing hatred you see here. The original and core message of the movement has been subverted.
  18. QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 02:07 PM) Barons won 5-4, blowing lead in the bottom of the 8th, taking it back in top of 9th before giving up one to make it interesting in the bottom half. Gallagher 2-3, RBI, R, BB, K. Marrero (he's on a roll) 2-5, 3-run HR, K. Sanchez 2-4, 2B. Shirek 7 IP, R, K, BB, 5 H. Corley .2 IP, 2 R in his Barons debut. Marrero getting his groove back on - 7-for-15, HR, 6 RBI, BB in last 4 games Charlie Shirek's April numbers, in 4 starts: 26 IP, 0.69 ERA, 0.62 WHIP, .124 AvgA, 4.9 K/9, 1.7 BB/9, 2.71 GB:FB. K number is still a little lower than you'd like to see, but far better than the 3.2 K/9 he put up in AA last year. He's maybe been the most dominant SP in the system so far, statistically.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) Am I denying there's waste in governance? No, that'd be silly. But what always happens is people get elected promising to balance the budget by demolishing waste (I believe that governor a**-grabber got elected by smashing an old automobile), then they get into office, go after that evil waste, and they find it's a factor of 100x or 1000x less than what they originally thought. And the waste that is there winds up being in things that they can't cut...like where it saves you large sums of money to provide people with family planning services and end of life services, but then you wind up being accused of setting up "Death panels". Things like Medicare, Social Security, etc., wind up operating with vastly lower operating costs than similar setups outside of the government, because they're helped by economies of scale. The one place where there's probably legitimately large amounts of "Waste" that you could cut...the DOD. But defense cuts = you want all the troops to die. So, the only way to actually eliminate waste is to spend even more money on defense to make it look better, like Obama had to do in order to get rid of the F-22. There are federal agencies that deliver something like 10%, or less, of their money/services to the constituents they intend to serve. There is plenty of waste that can be cut. Its not that its dramatically less - its more about the political realities you mention.
  20. QUOTE (3E8 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 01:00 PM) Where has santo=dorf been lately? No longer a member.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 12:57 PM) Oh please, start naming the list of things you'd love to cut. I love hearing how cutting back on education spending or medicare or social security or whatever else you want to name is going to balance the budget forever, especially for the ones with dedicated funding streams. It's fun. (I'm just going to assume you're educated enough that you won't fire off the canards of eliminating foreign aid and waste). That last bit can and should be a real emphasis. The only reasons it comes off as a "canard" are: 1. Many people who say it, don't actually know what it means or how to address it 2. Most people want to make it either "throw more money at it" or "cut everything X%", neither of which are meaningful. If you took a real, business-minded look at things in government, you could absolutely cut waste and save money. In fact, Obama has done a little of this already, though not nearly enough.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) One of the biggest problems at many urban school systems is a complete lack of any sort of Pre-K readiness being given to kids by their parents. One in five kids is getting to K in our school system without understanding how a book actually works... I am not talking about reading either. I mean know which way was up, you read from right to left, etc. You read from right to left? Joking aside, I agree this is one of the major problems. I've said many times before, one way to help with this is make the child care tax deduction more useful than the current $4k cap. You are basically encouraging people to find the cheapest, and least educational, child care experience possible.
  23. QUOTE (G&T @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 12:46 PM) That's a federal law. The feds should be adminstering it, not state police. While State Police work for and on behalf of the state, they are also expected to work with federal authorities to assist in enforcing their laws where situations present themselves. That of course ends up being a highly subjective and inconsistent expectation, but, its part of the picture for them.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) Judging by the history of governmental programs? Absolutely. I would honestly assume they were wrong until proven otherwise. So if that's the stance to take... how do you do anything at all that costs money? If you were in Congress, or the executive branch, what would be your recommendation for trying to budget anything?
  25. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Apr 27, 2010 -> 11:47 AM) And if you're a citizen but the police officer doesn't believe you? As the example above shows.
