4/13 GT: Sox @ Blue Jays, Floyd v. Romero
NorthSideSox72 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in 2010 Season in Review
And since I did the same thing yesterday, I have to do it again today. Topic title edited. I know, party pooper, but its just not appropriate. And I wouldn't want to stop the mojo. -
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) Sauer starting for the Dash. Didn't see that - where did you pick that up?
-
Yeah, I was going to say, I see the same stupid stuff at The Cell. There will always be some small slice of either fan base who finds it funny to be an asshole.

Charlotte @ Norfolk, 6:15pm CT, Harrell v Tilman B-Ham is off Potomac @ Winston-Salem, 6:00pm CT, Fabian vs UNK Lexington @ Kannapolis, 6:05pm CT, UNK vs Hopps (5th rd 2009 pick)

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 12:28 PM) Flowers (6 RBI), Danks (multiple XB hits) and CJ Retherford (4 RBI) all off to pretty good starts. Viciedo (.200) not so much, just like last season out of the gate. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 12:40 PM) I see he doesn't have a single BB yet. They haven't even played for a week yet. Comparing this to last season is a little over the top at this point.

Mobile devices have come a long way, but they are still lacking some pieces. Most people still have a seperate phone, music player, and PC/laptop, as well as possibly other mobile units like GPS, radio, game player, etc. So describe here, what your ultimate all-in-one MOBILE device would be? The one you'd pay big money for, so that you could have it in just one place? Here's mine. If this device existed, I'd pay serious money for it... --Data phone capabilities like my Blackberry has (but a less clunky OS), the usual - cell, text, web, calendar/task sync, etc. --Music playing software as good as (or better than) iPod --Storage capacity similar to a large store iPod (80 GB or bigger) --Ability to automatically sync data when connected to a home base computer --A GPS unit that can be used for navigation away from roads - real nav software with USGS data for altitude, etc. --A tough case - water and shock resistant, instead of these flimsy things currently out there --AM/FM radio receiver --2-way radio capabilities (not PTT, but self-powered point-to-point radio, like FRS or MGRS) --Enough battery power to go a week without charging There's my ideal product. All those things exist in seperate products, but not one. How about yours?

4/12 GT: Sox @ Blue Jays, Peavy vs. Tallet

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) He hit the ball hard a couple times against the Indians. Since then he's looked terrible. Just like last year. This is ridiculous. weren't you saying earlier the bullpen was bad? The one that's been good? I didn't see most of yesterday, but every other game I've watched, and Rios has looked a world better than last year. Are you just going by the week's worth of stats? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 04:07 PM) Balta smiles as the ESPN announcer marvels at the "450 million year old" age of the MN limestone used to make a large wall in LF. I have a chunk of green limestone from the southern reaches of the Canadian Shield, spent some time in the BWCA/Quetico area, north of the Laurentian Divide. Some of the oldest exposed bedrock on the planet, and its loaded will all sorts of goodies. You'd love it up there.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) I've lost all hope that the Barons will win a single game this year. They have some prospects worth watching, though. Morel, Marrero, Mabee, Shelby, Shirek, Nunez, possibly Socolovich, possibly Luis.

QUOTE (earthshiner @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) I think he means emergency third string if lets say both aj and lucy go down in the same game. I would guess its Nix. Yes, I mean the 3rd catcher ON THE TEAM. Lucy is the 2nd catcher. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) If that's the case.. I would guess Konerko since he came up as a catcher. I really doubt that they want Konerko doing that right now, with his age, hip, etc. My best guess is Nix, or maybe Vizquel. -
So on this team, as currently constructed... who is the 3rd catcher?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 02:26 PM) When can we expect to see lineups? Ozzie clearly couldn't go with his s*** Sunday lineups yesterday, I'm hoping we don't have to be without Gordon, TCQ, or Paulie today. Pierre could use a day off... we've seen very little of Nix, so I'd bet he gets in a game or two this road trip. -
Garrett starts 2010 in Kanny's bullpen. After a tumultuous 2009, and now being 22 years old with 3 minor league seasons under his belt, he needs to step it up to get his shot.
-
Kevin is in Kanny, but he's the backup C behind Miguel Gonzalez. Gonzalez is considered highly as a prospect, so the best hope for Dubler at this point is if Gonzalez does well and is promoted mid-season, allowing Dubler to get some regular at bats. At this point though, Dubler appears to have become organizational filler.
-
Justin is starting the year in Charlotte, in the bullpen. He may get a shot at sliding back into a starter role, depending on how the Charlotte rotation changes through the season.
-
Charlie is starting the year in the B-Ham rotation. His stock had been rising steadily up through his mid-season promotion last year, but then his K numbers dropped to a level far too low. So getting those K numbers back up while retaining good control and inducing groundballs at his usual rate. Game 1, looks like he's on that track: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 11 GO vs 3 FO Great start to the year for him.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 12:18 PM) The first good swing I saw him take this year won the game last night. And I actually didn't get to see that swing (only saw parts of yesterday's game), so maybe that's a sign he's calming down a bit. Hopefully.
-
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) No they are not going to continue to hit that poorly. But you gotta think ahead and recognize that Kotsay should not even be given the chance to hit his way out of it. He is on the downside of his career and hasnt been a regular since 2006, when he hit a whopping 7 hrs in 502 ABs. He is a role player and any significant at bats he is given is detrimental to a team that is going to be in a dogfight for a playoff spot. Why do we need to see him get 100 ABs to recognize that? He is not going to suddenly become a productive player. Jones hasn't been good for years but I suppose he may have some upside if you believe in his newfound health and fitness. I have my doubts but I am willing to see if he can help. Pierre and Teahan are both average at best players. We don't really have any other options there however. I don't disagree with any of those points. And while Jones is apparently in good shape, my concern is that his swing has looked terrible so far. He appears to be swinging for the fences every time, and he looks like he's flailing up there.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) Yeah, but these tell you what "above average" plays certain players made. Using DRS (defensive runs saved) might not be something smart here, but to see how many plays a player has made out of his zone and inside of his zone should tell you something. Over a season it will definitely tell you something. Over a week it tells you basically nothing.

Ozzie please resign, I know you can't sit through this again

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 11:41 AM) Which was the 100% biggest fluke about that season. There were pretty much no duplication of those great seasons from anyone except Jenks. Oh I don't know, Takatsu was bad somewhere else after he left the Sox, wasn't he? -
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) First week pitching stats are encouraging: Sox 2nd in the league in staff ERA (2.95), 2nd in strikeouts (50), 2nd in runs allowed (20), fewest HR's allowed (1). The only bad thing is that they're 2nd to last in walks allowed (26). Pitching, including both rotation and bullpen, have been great. Defense is improved too. The good news is, as much as we all bash guys like Pierre, Kotsay, Jones and Teahen (with good reason), even those guys are NOT going to continue hitting like .100.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 09:48 PM) FanGraphs has some new defensive stats up. They're very interesting. They've now included +/-, revised Zone Rating, and some other cool stuff. What's great is that these are updated nightly, unlike UZR, which is updated weekly. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/r...-fielding-stats Some nice tidbits... This week, Rios has made two plays out of his zone. He's made all the plays that have been in there, giving him a RZR of 1.000. With all of this he has saved 1 run in center so far. Interestingly, Teahen has made 4 plays out of his zone, while he has failed to make 2 plays that are in his zone out of the 6 in total. Regardless, he has also saved 1 run on defense so far. Beckham's made 12/14 plays in his zone, he's been a neutral player at 2B on D. Konerko's 2/4 for plays in his zone. I think one of them was the hit Hafner got that Paulie failed to make a play on. Even though Alexei had a blunder yesterday, his defensive metrics are currently the best on the team. He's saved 3 runs on defense thus far, with 3 plays that were made out of the zone and a perfect 9/9 within his zone. Quentin's been a -1 DRS so far. Pierre is a 4/4 so far on balls within his zone and is a +1 DRS. I don't know what the cutoffs were for these, but I think the last time they were updated was yesterday. Anyway, these new fielding stats were available before through Bill James' site, but now they're free. They look to be great in the way that they tell you the specifics of the player. Like how many scoops a 1B made or how many bunts did so and so field well or not well. It breaks it done a lot better than UZR. However, the end result is usually the same. With this, you can dig a bit deeper, find out what players do well and not so well on and really understand the player's defensive abilities much better. To say that a week's worth of games is too small a sample size would be a massive understatement.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 11:19 AM) We don't have the pitching of 05. Maybe the starters but our relievers in 05 were absolutely incredible. They have already lost a few games this year. No they haven't. The team ERA is still below 3, and I believe the bullpen's is 3 even. The bullpen this year looks better than what the Opening Day 2005 one did. -
Castro still in Arizona, will start season on DL

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 05:57 PM) Castro is making slow/no progress and has been shut down for a few days. I'd rather have Lucy anyway. Neither is likely to hit worth a damn, but Lucy can throw out runners, handles pitchers well, and brings some athleticism. -
QUOTE (hometeamfan @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) The Sox are 4-2 and you want to beat up on the minor leaguers??? 2010 Stats: Rios 23AB 1R 4H 2DBL 1HR 3RBI 3BB 4SO ($69M) Quentin 18AB 6H 2DBL 1HR 3RBI 5BB/HBP 2SO Beckham 22AB 3R 5H 1DBL 1HR 1RBI 3BB 4SO Danks2 17AB 5R 5H 2DBL 1HR 2RBI 3BB 6SO 1 TRPL ($1800p mo) Yeah, what a loser JorDanks has been so far.....
