  1. WTF? The bullpen has been pretty good so far this year, but for one bad night. And we need ideas? MacDougal is MacDougal - he'll do fine when the pressure is off, and implode when its is on. He's gone soon, we can only hope. And I agree with qwerty that Carrasco was fortunate last year, he isn't great. Egbert and Wassermann would, IMO, be better choices. BUT, this is ONE GAME we are reacting to - let's be a little more patient about it than this. Sheesh.
  2. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 10:07 PM) If I understand correctly, these are the two things you are talking about: http://www.dq.winsila.com/tips-tricks/disa...erformance.html http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm Also, I highly, HIGHLY recommend this product to any PC user: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ That product is a lifesaver. Thanks. I did the first thing already a while back when researching the issue, it didn't work. But I haven't done the other one, or tried that product - so thanks!
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 11, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) This is an absolute bulls*** article. There are so many misrepresentations in this... it's about as bad as Glenn Beck fearmongering. Here are the FACTS. Zales does have 45 days to give out COBRA paperwork from date of termination. You can elect from 30 days from there. And it is 100% retroactive - that is REQUIRED by law. If this lady had the surgery, it would still have been technically covered by insurance. In reality, Zales is still on the hook for the medical payments if in a self paid plan. If they do not have self-funded plans, they still will get the amount figured into their premiums for the next year. It really pisses me off that articles like this come out and totally misrepresent what the truth is. And then people like you, Balta, fall hook, line and sinker and scream "our health insurance suckssssss..." That's not a knock on you, it's a knock on misrepresenting the facts about how a program really works. Her first mistake is telling your manager ANYTHING like this. Go to HR first. Anyway, I know how this law works very thouroghly, not only because I'm going through it now, but from a management perspective. But that also means, with COBRA, you have to pay up front until coverage begins. Hard to do with tens of thousands of dollars for surgery. Really though, I don't see this article as an illustration of a major problem with health care here. I just saw it as a sign that, apparently, Zales is a lousy place to work, and this regional manager (or whomever made the decision) is an asshole.
  4. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 07:36 PM) You can turn both of those features off, which I did. Not sure which you mean... I may have already tried. But if you have pointers, I'm all ears.
  5. I'm guessing if this guy just went to the Sox and said, hey, can you just pay the medical bill and we'll call it even... they'd do it, and all would be settled without having to sue.
  6. Dash spot Carter 3 in the first, but so far Carter has walked 3 guys in his first 2/3 of an inning.
  7. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) Looks like he's trying to the get the [relatively] hot hand of Fields more chances at the top. OBP wise this is probably our best bet. Good to see the CF in the 9 hole, good spot for him. I see what you did there.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) Agreed. As long as you have enough RAM, Vista is all good. I went all out and got 4 GB. The problems I have had with Vista have nothing to do with how much memory I have. Its OS controls. USB ports for example... I start up with various USB items plugged in or not, different each time (may or may not have certain iPods hooked up for example). This causes Vista all sorts of problems with the way it addresses ports. Another example, it takes forever to start up, BUT ONLY if I have the backup drive attached. If not, its lightning fast. Turns out that is because of the Windows Search engine, which insists on scanning certain things before starting up - not a function of RAM, just bad OS component design. Plus a wide variety of other issues, OS just plain fails at times, services fail for no apparent reason, and that irritating and idiotic design where every time a program wants to show you a message or act, you have to tell Vista "no, I really mean it", or "yes, show me the message", at which time it feels the need to stop everything else and just show you that. Vista = garbage OS. XP Pro was just so, so much better.
  9. The GOP is going to have a hard time reconciling the fact that their two core areas of policy support - small government, and social conservatism - have been tearing them in two for some time now. Ultimately, the social conservatism is on the wrong side of history. Just look at gay marriage. A couple decades ago, there was so little support for making that OK, that it wasn't even a major topic of discussion. Then ten years ago, as the tide began to turn, the "Christian Right" began to fight against it. Now, states are toppling like dominoes to legalize it. On the other hand, a push for smaller, more responsible government, and a renewed push for personal freedoms, are prime time for gaining more support. This would seem to indicate that they should place more emphasis on this small government, fiscal policy approach - and I think they will, because they have to, or risk becoming a regional party of the south (plus Utah). But it will be a long, hard fight, because even though the religious right is waning in control of the party, they are still a huge force to contend with. Fortunately for the Republicans, this Democratic Congress is so embarassingly bad, that the Dems will give them every shot at getting back in the game some time relatively soon.
  10. This goes back to what I have said here a zillion times in response to screams of MEDIA BIAS!!!!!. Forget the political bias - that is nothing compared to the damage done in modern media by the blending of commentary and news. That, more than anything else, is what is destroying modern news reporting. Its a joke, and its only making this country more and more ignorant. Example: I went to cnn.com the other day. Of their 4 headliner articles, 2 were commentary, not news. WTF? Why even call yourself a news network anymore, if have your "breaking news" isn't news at all? CNN = Commentary Not News.
  11. First, your "surprise check" from your 401k is going to cost you some money at tax time if it was any more than $1000. So if I were you, I'd put it in an IRA before you get taxed AND penalized for it. But if you insist... I was a die-hard Thinkpad fan. All three laptops I had owned before this one were Thinkpads, and were awesome in every way. Not flashy, but reliable, fast to load (less bloatware), and tough. Until my last one, that is. The battery started becoming loose, went bad, replaced it, started to not be able to work when unplugged. The plastic bits that hold the battery in place were broken, and its not like that is a modular piece like a drive that can just be replaced - you have to get it repaired at a shop for a fortune. And be aware, this is an ongoing issue if you use a higher capacity battery with Thinkpads. So, I got my first non-IBM/Lenovo laptop - this HP dv5t. And I love it so far. One word of warning though - AVOID VISTA IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. This OS is utter and complete trash.
  12. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) Chris Matthews has been doing it for years, and no i don't find it that entertaining. some people do i guess. That's pretty much how I feel about any of the people mentioned so far. I prefer news, not talking heads. They can go off like a tea kettle all they want, I could care less. There will be stupid people who worship these lunatics of course, from both extremes, but they were stupid to begin with so what has really changed?
  13. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) I booed Crede last year while he was still with the White Sox and I'll continue to boo him now that he is part of the twins. What Joe Crede did in 2005 was great, but everything he did after that pissed me off: He waited too long to get surgery, he became a dick when he cared more about money than staying with the Sox for a cheaper contract when he shouldn't expect much money because of his back, and his agent is Boras. Also, it didn't help that I became a big fan of Fields and Crede's return sent Fields back to Charlotte. And when Crede returned, he committed a ton of errors and got hurt again all the while a bunch of annoying Crede fanbois kept acting like Crede was some sort of Messiah-like figure. Give me a break. I'll always hate Crede more than I hate Anderson. Fields is twice the ballplayer and person that Crede will ever be. 1. He waited on surgery because that is what people with back problems SHOULD do. Back surgery is risky, and any doctor worth their salt would tell you it is a last resort. Its easy for fans to point and say he should have had surgery, but that isn't the smart thing to do, at all. 2. Most players go for the best possible money, or at least darn close to it. How you can fault Crede for this but not everyone else is beyond me. 3. The guy went out there with a serious injury as much as he could. He may not have made all the best decisions, but, you hate him for that? Seriously? 4. You haven't got clue one about what kind of person Crede or Fields are. 5. Not sure if you are aware, but, this wasn't just Crede walking away from the Sox - the Sox weren't going to rely on him as a starter in a free agent contract (nor should they). It was a mutual decision. 6. Fields = 2 * Crede? LOLOLOLOL... I agree it was time to move on from Crede, for obvious reasons of injury and money, but this is just laughable. Let's give Fields a year or two, and Crede as well for that matter, before making bizarre hyperbole about who is twice the player someone else is.
  14. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 12:35 PM) Just about all drunk drivers think they can drive fine. That's the problem. If you rarely encounter other cars in your area, that's great. But if you do, and even if it's the other driver, not you, making the dumb move, your ability to respond accordingly to protect yourself is going to be diminished if you've been drinking. You're asking for trouble. If you ever get in an accident while you're drunk, even if it isn't otherwise your fault, you could be in a very difficult situation. I wouldn't waste the energy trying to explain this. He's just firing for effect anyway, best to ignore it.
  15. QUOTE (BearSox @ Apr 10, 2009 -> 08:28 AM) look 2 posts up sorry, I missed that somehow.
  16. Holy frijoles... Did anyone else see Gregory Infante's line from his start for Kanny today? 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K Mercy!
  17. QUOTE (daa84 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 03:51 PM) royals won it with a 2 R HR....just sayin OK, so... what are you saying?
  18. QUOTE (quickman @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 10:59 AM) the pussification of america. We have proudly turned into the french. just what we need. I agree. Throwing a baseball at people's heads because you aren't playing well is acting like a "pussy". Good thing we won't be doing that.
  19. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) Justin Cassel is on Charlotte's Reserve list. I guess this means a personal issue has come up for him. Clevelan Santeliz is on B'ham's DL. Bizarre. I saw Cassel on B-Ham's roster, which was confusing. Now he's on reserve, but with Charlotte? Anyone know anything else about this?
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) Wow, that was fast. Good move though. I do have some fear that Getz only gets 2 games there too, but I hope not. Hopefully, if Wise continues to struggle, this moves Brian into the starting role. And later in the season, if Wise still sucks, we'll probably see Kroeger or Cook take Wise's place when he is released. Actually, never mind on Cook - he hits right, as do the three starting outfielders in that scenario. They'd get a lefty to replace Wise, probably Kroeger.
  21. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 09:32 AM) I say put one in Teahan's head. He was hit intentionally after he didn't back off the plate. QUOTE (Jimmywins1 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) The Royals pulled this same s*** with JD last year, I am fully in favor of pegging one of those uppity f***s in the face. Pathetic.
  22. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Apr 9, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) who would make better use of said roster spot? Kroeger or Cook come to mind.

  24. 1. Beaning means hitting them in the head, which did not happen. 2. No way it was intentional, though I am sure he was trying to throw inside, to get him off the plate. 3. TCQ's reaction wasn't even that bad, the catcher just got nervous, he wasn't going after the pitcher or anything. 4. There is nothing to retaliate for.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) Give em hell Gavy. Shouldn't he be giving them gel?
