  1. Interesting stat for the day... The Sox went 6 for 6 in SB attempts. When was the last time you saw a Sox team steal 6 bases in a game, let alone that many without being caught. Kroeger did get picked off 1st though.

    Book Thread

QUOTE (The Gooch @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 06:48 PM) I'm reading Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides. I am about a third of the way through and so far it is a great read. It tells stories of America conquering the west from the sides of the Navajo Indians, Mexican leaders, general Kearny, and the trapper/guide Kit Carson. It really gives an understanding of the of the time from many perspectives. The book shows no biases and shows the events from both sides. Probably the besy historical book I have ever read, and I've read quite a few. Sides is just the best I've ever read, at making history as interesting as it can be. Fantastic book. You want to know how the American personality got to where it is today? The march across the continent is the best way to find out. And that book may be the best lense for doing so.
  3. We don't have a leadoff problem. Jerry Owens and Dewayne Wise have one. Getz can lead off just fine, and Lexi can hit 2-slot.
  4. Ginter at 2B for Charlotte? I'd guess its Nix, or V-Merc. Also, with Stewart gone, its Lucy to Charlotte more likely now, as I thought. Lucy in B-Ham would basically be saying, your career is done, go teach Tyler. I still think Lucy has better potential than Armstrong, and judging by how quick they moved armstrong to the minor league camp, I think the organization agrees.
  5. I knew they would never keep all 4 of these backup candidates in the system. So now there are only two left in camp - Miller and Lucy. Seems likely that Miller has the job, so, him and Armstrong will split time in Charlotte. If Miller falters, we'll see whichever is doing better, though Lucy makes more sense being a right handed hitter.
  6. Good deal on Gavin, I think. I'm going to sift out the Stewart stuff into a different thread.

    Dreams

Despite what some books might tell you, I think it is impossible to interperet someone else's dreams without knowing that person pretty well. Dreams are built with constructs and connections in your own head, and so the symbology and images and experiences you have are meaningful to YOU, not necessarily others. There may be some common themes, but none 100%. That said... Here's one, I had it a few times in college. I was in a fraternity house, running around it in circles. And there was snow on the ground, inside. I was chasing Sir George Solti, who was in a pair of polka dot shorts, and I was throwing snowballs at him. Enjoy.
  8. QUOTE (Slydernelson @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) It would be cool if he threw out the first pitch on April 10th, the first game of the year against the Twins. Anyone know if they are going to keep up with the "Blackouts" this year? Welcome to the board! No idea on the blackouts.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 12:06 PM) I pay taxes to IL because I work here, but my primary residence is still IN. The legal aspect is beyond me, because I don't know tax law at all, but how can you legally claim to represent a district if you are legally claiming to be a primary resident of another state? I believe each state can dictate the necessities of residence of their US house reps.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) My concern is that it techincally makes them ineligible to respresent their district because by his own admission, his primary residence is elsewhere. Not to mention Joe Biden thinks he is not patriotic anymore. Yeah, if he was my rep, he probably just lost my vote in the next election.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) If that's conjecture, who in the hell would "conject" Anderson or Fields? Especially Anderson? I don't know. Fields may not the WORST choice in the world, but Anderson sure is.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) Gregor in the daily herald seems to think KW is close to making a deal for a CF with leadoff capabilities. Well, we did just trade Sergio Miranda to the Brewers. Could be related somehow maybe?
  13. Saw that artcile this morning, kind of irritates me. Headline says Anderson and Fields under consideration for leadoff, right? Yet, look at the actual quotes. Guillen has said that Getz is, but has NOT said Fields or Anderson. Looks like those two names are conjecture on the writer's part.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 08:50 AM) We aren't getting Tony Gwynn Jr for Sergio Miranda. First of all it would have been news. Second of all, really? Gwynn for Miranda? Come on guys. Eh, maybe not a huge stretch. A barely usable backup OF? He has little value. Seems to me like it might be close to reasonabe. Still more likely to be some other low lever minor leaguer though.
  15. Happy B-Day to the ultimate needler.
  16. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 06:04 PM) One more reason not to hire a personal trainer. Today, I notice one of these idiots 'training' someone using one of those big, rubber balls full of air that people use for everything now it seems, I forget what they're called. Anyway, this genius slowly climbs up onto this thing, so that he is wobbling and barely able to stand on it. At this point, he has 100% of my attention, because we all know where this is headed. As I walk over to get a closer look, he goes into a really slow golf swing. Now I don't golf, so I'm not sure exactly how standing on this ball is supposed to improve your swing, but I bet he's fed this poor bastard some line about balance and strict form and discipline through your swing. I have to admit, up to this point, even though he's extremely wobbly, I'm impressed that he's still standing on it. Then the f***head goes into a full swing, loses his balance, falls off and hits his head on a mirrror. Yes, he was dumb enough to do it near a wall. That is awesome.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 10:02 PM) This was the biggest slap in the face thing in a long long time. This guy seriously has no clue on international political ettiquete (sp)... he's too busy being an arrogant dick. Yes, I said it. I know it's symbolic... but dammit, have your staff take care of the things that are highly symbolic and do the right thing. His mere "presence" is supposed to awe people, and it's becoming very nauseating. /waits for the "oh it doesn't really matter" pitchfork crowd defending Obama's every breath... Seriously? The wrong kind of DVD is "the biggest slap int he face thing in a long long time"? Hell, Obama himself has done worse than that in international relations already and he's been in office for 2 months. Bush did a bazillion things on the international stage more offensive than this. I'm starting to think maybe you are just going that far over the top now for the entertainment value.
  18. QUOTE (hawkubes @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 02:20 AM) i could not care less who throws the 1st pitch for the Sox. Has that ever mattered? All I care about is that the sox put out the best lineup possible, which does not include Brian Anderson. Lets get real. Welcome to the board. Usually, if you quote someome else's posts, you do so because you are responding to something THAT POSTER said. Your response has no connection whatsoever to the person whose post you quoted. Usually you just want to hit "Add Reply" at the bottom of the page for a fresh thought. Also, if you want to discuss Brian Anderson, there are about a dozen threads in this forum discussing the CF position topic.
  19. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) interesting that miranda said he got traded bcuz we still havent heard anything at all and on mlb rumors they said that doug melvin said theyre not discussing any trades with anyone right now. thats not to say that hes not but still. Well, at this point, Sergio has also updated his Facebook with this infortmation as well, so its out there from his end. Unless he's lying or is being lied to, he was traded. ETA: Keep in mind too, if he was swapped for some other low level minor leaguer, this sort of thing may not hit the press at all, except as a footnote somewhere later.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) Interesting. You don't usually hear about a low minor for a low minor trade, so maybe there's something brewing (no pun intended). So Miranda said he got traded, and not just released and picked up by Milwaukee? He said "traded", yes. Not released. I really doubt the Sox would release Miranda - other than that one month early in 2008 at W-S, he's been pretty damn good, especially for a 13th rounder. Makes sense he might get traded, though. Between Beckham, Miranda, Paiml and others, the middle infield in the middle of the Sox system was very crowded. Can't find places for all of them.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) Simple question...would you buy a car from a bankrupt company? I'd love an explanation of how exactly a car company survives bankruptcy. And especially how it would do so in this particular credit market where financing is so hard to get from anyone except the government. Well, I specifically answered the question about financing already. A car company in bankruptcy has happened before (Chrysler twice I think, and maybe Ford once), and they survived. Also, a car company survives bankruptcy by still covering all warranties, and by standing on stage with the feds saying that they are intact, with financing, and moving forward.
  22. Sox just did a trade, FYI. All I know at this point is that Sergio Miranda was traded to the Brewers. Thread is in Future Sox, until or unless I hear other names involved, or if any major leaguers were involved.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) “He is making all the right moves in terms of playing a bad hand,” Obama on Geithner or "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." Bush on Michael Brown I have to agree, I was thinking the same thing.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) The problem down the line, especially with this one is...if GM goes bankrupt, or if Chrysler goes bankrupt and they actually shutter their doors, many of the companies down the line that manufacture parts for companies like Toyota, Honda, and yes, Ford, also manufacture parts for GM and Chrysler. Thus, if one of the big 3 shuts its doors, it kills the companies down the line, the costs for Ford/Honda/Toyota go up significantly because they have to find new suppliers for their parts, and the healthy companies fall apart as well. This money in particular is going to those very suppliers. You may not like the fact that GM is basically the Works Progress Association now, but to borrow a phrase from another bailed out sector, this is a case of systemic risk. You can't kill one without killing all. If you can suggest a way around it, I'd love to hear it. I said bankrupt for GM, not fail outright. There is a difference. For Chrysler I said shutter its doors, but on that one, I defintiely concede your point - it would have major ripple effects. I'd be fine with a bankruptcy and rebuild under the conditions I mentioned.
  25. Sergio Miranda has been traded to the Brewers (he told me this directly). No word yet on who he was traded for, or if this is part of a larger deal.
