  1. Why do that? He draws a ton of walks which get him on base at a much higher success rate, and I'd rather see him put a run on the board than clog the bases anyway. He's faster than Paulie, but he's not exactly a burner.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 15, 2012 -> 06:07 PM) I say odds are less than 50/50 De Aza is on the team in 4 years. That's a good bet for anybody, and has nothing to do with your contention that we should move him to a corner platoon role for no reason.
  3. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 15, 2012 -> 12:13 PM) He can't play CF and he can't hit lefties. Let him put up that OPS at a corner OF spot. So you'd rather have an average-hitting, exceptional defensive corner outfielder platooning than an exceptional-hitting, average defensive CF? That's in a vacuum, not considering that we'd have to find an alternative (i.e. Rios). As everyone else has said, Rios was AAAWFUL last year, and I think you know that. Go ahead, give me sample size as an excuse and I'll hand it right back to you. Marty, this is a ridiculous position to take. We have a handful of legitimate MLB hitters and you're somehow finding a way to criticize one of them. Attention should be paid elsewhere if you have a problem with team makeup.
  4. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:39 AM) While this post is excellent...and correct...2nd city does have a point. The Sox are in contention. So to talk about trading away pieces at this time smacks of the White Flag trade. The Sox still need to put butts in the seats...and while that isn't happening now, if they keep winning and are close, those butts will show. Yes, the Sox want to compete every year...but it is a unique situation. I don't know how long it will take for the Sox to rebound IF they did a complete and massive rebuild. Sox fans are good fans, but finicky fans. We support our team, but not like other clubs fans. it's too early to talk trade, unless KW is absolutely blown out of the water. I agree, it'd be foolish to make a trade right now, with the exception of a lefty reliever, since we're pretty loaded there. That shouldn't affect our competitiveness much, as our bullpen is improperly weighted as it is.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 14, 2012 -> 08:05 PM) De Aza is a LF'er playing CF. He covers the gaps at the expense of letting balls drop in front of him. He's a stopgap who's best position would be a 400 AB corner OF. ...you're saying that a CF with a 123 OPS+ batting leadoff full-time should be a platoon corner OF? Why? Please give evidence.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 12, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) Well done again, but... what does Chris have in his hands in that picture? They look like car radios to me, and it looks like he's going to smash them. Why does Chris Sale hate radios?
  7. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 12, 2012 -> 09:25 AM) Scott Podsednik picked up by BoSox. Hurray, my name makes sense again (kind of)! I should look into getting my screen name changed at some point...I was young and foolish and swept up in the 2005ness!
  8. This is exactly what the Sox look like when they play as the roster was designed. Great pitching, a bomb from Dunn, Beckham and Rios contributing, and solid defense. Oh, and congrats to Dunn for not making history!
  9. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 11, 2012 -> 07:42 PM) This makes no sense KW sounds stupid. Put him in a role and LEAVE him there. Disagree, I think KW comes off as the only person who seems to have a legitimate plan. My take on this -- and many may disagree -- is that this all came down to a failure of leadership on the part of Robin. What I think happened was that in the discussion over Sale's arm, no consensus was reached, which is fine when you have a bunch of smart people. However, you have to come to some sort of decision for AT LEAST the short term before leaving the conference room, and they clearly didn't do that because every single person had a different answer as to what was going on. Coop comes out and says he's perfectly fine and may be back in the rotation, Robin says he's shut down for the year, and KW is mum for the time being. I think KW kept his hands off of this situation in part to see if Robin could handle it on his own, and in part because he doesn't want to seem like he's pulling RV's strings, which, frankly, is the right move. RV should be able to sit down with the experts and DECIDE what's going on in the short term, and get everyone on the same page. That's what leaders do, and -- ostensibly, at least -- RV is the team leader. There was just utterly obvious confusion, and that's when it's incumbent upon someone in a position of responsibility to provide unequivocal direction, even if it ends up being wrong. Eventually, though, KW stepped in and took control, established a firm position and announced it to the press. (Obviously, I'm assuming a lot here, but this is really the only explanation that makes sense to me) Now, you can make the argument that KW has thusfar set Robin up to fail in a few obvious ways, partially by pulling him off the street to manage, and partially by authorizing Coop to take a position of parallel influence with RV. I won't argue with those things. But now that RV is here, it's time for trial by fire. See if Robin can make the tough decisions, risk being wrong and be a leader. I think he deserves a ton of criticism for this, but I also knew there would be a learning period for Ventura. I won't bury him for this, but I sure hope he learns from it.
  10. 2x post somehow. Stupid technology...
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ May 11, 2012 -> 12:02 PM) APPRECIATE THE MOTHAf***IN GAME
  12. I'm just glad we're not playing their AAA team. Those guys are the FUTURE!
  13. Marty, quit asking to sit one of our only decent prospects in his rookie season at the age of 23. Your lack of patience is remarkable, even amongst a crowd that includes people looking to sign Peavy to a monster extension.
  14. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ May 10, 2012 -> 07:46 AM) Dunn's HR last night was said to be 425 feet. The blast the other day in Detroit was apparently only 422 feet. One of those measurements is wrong. I'm guessing the one in Detroit. Considering that the right field wall is only 330 feet away in Comerica Park, whereas the right center field wall is somewhere between 380-400 feet away in Progressive Field, these measurements are probably somewhere close to correct
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 9, 2012 -> 12:58 PM) Only a Chicago writer Phil Rodgers would think that is a fair trade.
  16. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ May 9, 2012 -> 07:16 AM) Rios really came through. Three hits including the game winning triple. And he has looked quite enthused this season. He was quite animated last night, and rightfully so. I wasn't following the game thread, but was anyone else as pissed off at Viciedo as I was? He completely gave up on that pop up. There's no excuse for playing like that. That play and Ramirez's error led to that 3-run inning for the Indians. I wasn't pissed, where it fell was probably outside his range. He pulled up rather than trying to make a play on it, which was probably the right move. He made the wrong move earlier in the game and was lucky it didn't turn into a triple because of it. What I DID think was that a decent LF could get there, and wouldn't that be nice. I'd still rather have him play in LF than sit or DH though.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 9, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) DA even you have to admit that this move was curious at best. When has a team ever moved a pitcher from starter to relief(closer, no less) as a result of a tender elbow? And when has that moved worked for the better? It just doesnt make sense, I dont see how one role is better than the other. One is stress on the arm for a long period of time(6-8 innings), the other is high stress on the arm in short doses, more frequently. I just dont see how that is expected to cure this tender elbow. They've been talking about limiting his innings all offseason. A move to the closer's role would do that. I think it's generally agreed-upon that while being a closer is not completely absent of stress, there is far less of it over the course of a season than for a starter. That's why you put injury-risk pitchers in the bullpen in the first place; Sale is definitely not the first example of that. If this move was designed to limit his total innings this year, then I'm cool with that. Otherwise, wtf is happening?
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 8, 2012 -> 10:37 PM) And it would be REALLY atrocious (team OBP) if not for Dunn's mid-20's walk total. Beckham, Viciedo and Morel are killing us there, as well as Ramirez and Rios/DeAza aren't great either. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/b...ePct/order/true Barely holding onto 10th place in the AL in OBP. Detroit's not much better, 9th at .310. Indians all the way up at .339 and in the top 3-4. De Aza has a .360 OBP, that's very respectable. The rest is clearly true, though. Also, Paulie's really the one propping us up with his .425 OBP. He's supposed to be the one driving in the runs, though. AJ's having a great season and all, but if we really had a masher behind Paulie...man....
  19. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 3, 2012 -> 05:56 PM) I'd rather it was Beckham sitting instead of Morel. Why's that? Beckham's had a small burst of success
  20. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 2, 2012 -> 07:10 PM) I mean, I guess 2nd place is close to first... In fact, it's virtually first place! Badum*TSS!* Pshh, percentage points....don't you wave your fancy SABRmetrics around here!
  21. To illustrate my point... (and others') It's never good to act like Michael Scott in real life
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2012 -> 12:16 AM) See? I was right. That is what Cowley was doing, the wrestling persona. That was a great reply from Telander. I like you caufield, but I wonder if what you did here isn't slimy. Telander prolly didn't want you posting his response for the world to see. He was nice enough to send u a response and you show it to the world. Just my take on that. Guys ... Cowley thought his followers knew his schtick. Now he knows better. Case closed. Slap on wrist. His posts I'm sure will be dull as hell from now on. He'll do the bare minimum of play by play from the games w/no opinion since people can't handle his Dice Clay act. Greg, in what way was that a "great reply"? He doesn't assign responsibility properly, justify anyone's actions or provide any rationale for Cowley's behavior or CST's. All he did was say "boys will be boys" which is a thoughtless response to any controversy and simply enables Cowley's poor behavior. I understand that he mentioned wrestling and so did you, but how does that make anything okay? If a wrestler takes a pro-toddler murder stance, can Cowley justifiably take the same stance and say it was a bit? That's nonsense.
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 2, 2012 -> 12:07 AM) Come the f*** on guys. BECKHAM! SALE! BASICALLY EVERYBODY EXCEPT HECTOR! we won the friggin' game. Indeed!
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 1, 2012 -> 11:48 PM) Here's the response I received...a little bit of a surprise, but maybe not as much vitriol for Cowley in the newsroom as there was for Mariotti. Joe is a good guy who made a mistake--and I think that's how most people see it. He felt that others were in on the joking and smack talk (pro wrestling kind of blabber) with him--a kind of club on the Internet, if you will. Now he knows. Now he will be who he is. I appreciate your concern, and I'm glad you care enough to write to the S-T about it. We're all going to try harder to be better here. All of us. Thanks much--Rick Telander That's a total cop-out response. "All of us are trying harder to be better" completely removes the responsibility from where it belongs. And "smack talk" as a euphemism for the grossness Cowley unleashed is offensive in its own right. Yuck.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ May 1, 2012 -> 09:55 PM) Cabrera lose that in the smoke?
