QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 06:43 PM) You know better anyway I'm filling in with a band at PK's tonight opening for Salt Kings if you are getting out. Are we talking about PKs in CDale? Maybe it's time to get out and support my soxtalk brethren.

yes, please! send him somewhere out of the AL Central, or, preferably, out of the AL in general!

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 08:28 PM) And since I am learning new things today, I will no longer eat trees for fear that they have feelings and emotions. You were eating trees before today? I'd just stick to veggies, they're a lot easier to digest, even WITH the emotions. I think this might be the only morally safe option though: http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2669

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 06:30 PM) He may get it then. I get boxes of stuff all throughout the year. Last year I got some fleece thing that I have no clue what it even is. Is it a snuggie?

Oh I remember my third point! It's encouraging to me how much more rational the arguments on this board are than the crap you see in the news story's Comments section. Soxtalk rules!

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) You are just talking about different levels at that point. You feel that the line should be drawn at extreme torture, I feel that the killing of any animal could be considered torture. Thats called an opinion. And in many people's opinion Mark is a hypocrite. If you dont think its hypocritical to kill animals for fun and then wish harm on some one else that tortured animals, that is entirely your choice. I think its hypocritical for me to eat meat and to get mad about hunting, or whatever. We all draw our own lines in the sand, but to make it out like there is no possible way to see the hypocrisy is just putting on blinders. Here is an article about Bear baying, which is legal in South Carolina. Because its legal that means its okay, even though its like dog fighting. So yeah hunting bears is a good thing, but dog fighting is bad. Come on. {edit} You dont know what Mark does or didnt do. What we do know is that black bear hunting is usually pretty cruel and Mark has taken part in it. He brags about killing animals. Yet these are all okay, but dog fighting is not. Its the basic definition of hypocrisy. How does killing an animal relate to killing an animal? They are both dead, its not about how they got there, its about the end result. The animals Mark happens to kill just arent cute and cuddly and put on a pedestal by humans. I don't see why discussion of degrees is off limits. Is premeditated murder worse than manslaughter? Probably. It's a matter of degrees, even though they both end with a dead body.

A few points -- and I'm sorry if any of these are rehashes: A) Hunting, even black bear hunting, is not comparable to dog fighting because of the sheer volume of suffering induced by dog fighting, even outside the fights themselves. Pit bulls are not naturally aggressive creatures; they have a propensity toward maintaining aggression after it's been instigated, but in order to instill the personality required for dog fights, you have to mistreat a dog over a period of months or years. Additionally, dog fights require "bait dogs" whose "job" is to get the pit bulls pissed off before the fight by being an easy target. These dogs lead excruciating lives and are often chosen for their submissive nature, so there is no chance they will defend themselves. There are many other violent and reprehensible side chains to dog fighting. The amount of cruelty required is unfathomable. At the risk of being glib, I don't think Buehrle's hunts require something called a "rape stand" used for systematic torture. Now, if he was bear-baiting middle ages style, that would be another story. B) There is a somewhat compelling argument that Buehrle is being hypocritical. I may even agree with it, as I don't hunt for the same reasons I find dog fights so disgusting. But so what if he is? Everyone is hypocritical in some respect. Attempts at pointing put the cruelties of hunting do not undo anything at issue. For instance, it could be considered cruel that I'm eating chicken nachos right now (Don Taco, you are amazing!); does that invalidate my above point about dog fighting? Clearly not. All it does is point out that perhaps I should reconsider the poultry industry. Who gives a crap if he's a hypocrite as long as he's right? C) I forgot my other point. But babies are delicious.

Not surprising. ESPN's party line is that Vick is a great person now cuz he does what his publicist says. Same policy they have for Ray Lewis. "He's redeemed! Don't ask questions!"

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 07:30 PM) For all you dog lovers out there, great MLB.com piece on MB & his wife Oh, and this quote has mysteriously disappeared from the article... I don't think I want to see anyone hurt, exactly, but right on! Finally, an athlete who doesn't confuse on-the-field accomplishment with personal redemption!

Why did they DFA him?

Unless the tagger was trying to reclaim Harry Carray for the Sox, he could have chosen a much more appropriate statue to deface. Maybe it was a Red Sox fan.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) JD Drew has played in 137 games or more in 4 of the last 5 seasons, and Mike Cameron had played in 120+ games in the previous 4 seasons as well as 141 or more in 3 of the past 4. You can say that they are injury prone, but Drew stayed healthy (again) and Cameron missed a hell of a lot more time than he had in the previous 4 years. In fact, the last time Cameron missed a significant amount of time, it was when his head ran into Carlos Beltran's head. I wouldn't say that has anything to do with his body but instead a freak accident. I don't think Cameron is injury prone, he just so happened to be injured last year. And they did have a CF who was more likely to be healthy in Jacoby Ellsbury, and he missed the most time of all. You can't expect a team to miss as much time as the Red Sox did to injury last year, even if you have some injury prone players. You expect some injuries - you don't expect to lose half of your starting lineup for a period of time. Well, they are 35 and 38 year old outfielders, respectively, so you gotta be entirely prepared for them to miss half the season. The rest of the guys, not so much.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) Based on the numerous other pitchers that have had their shoulder muscles detach from the bone. All of them had lost some velocity. Those are different shoulder muscles and incomparable. We don't have a comparable for this one.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 03:16 PM) I just cant see how his velocity will come back. There is no way his average fastball velocity will be 92-94 like it has been once gets back. Why not?

On the topic of JR's Sox investments being tied to his Bulls windfalls: Even if he can't directly pull cash from the Bulls and put it into the Sox, he can free up more money for Sox payroll if his other business investments are doing well. If he knows he's making significant cash off the Bulls which will be available in the future, he may be willing to pour more of his other assets into the Sox. Doesn't mean he has to sell Bulls stocks or use cash from that investment, just that his success in one area could influence his decisions in another.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 04:30 PM) You know the remarkable thing? The last time the Sox had a complete rebuilding project to do, they pulled it off in the course of 1 season, with basically no minor leagues to boot. i hope youre happy, you made andy gonzalez cry -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 03:31 PM) He had 3 throwing errors all year (according to Yahoo). June 22 against Atlanta, August 8th against Baltimore, and September 30th against Boston. Every other one was a fielding error. Thats pretty damn good. Screw it, keep racking up the errors if theyre due to excess range.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Feb 5, 2011 -> 05:45 PM) Scot Gregor on White Sox Weekly on the Score was pretty sure and made a solid prediction that Teahen is not with the team on opening day. For cereal? I don't see it, but I'm far from an expert. Are they really abandoning him as a super-utility? Huh.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 5, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) Guthrie, Matusz, Bergesen, Tillman, Arrieta? It's not established, but that's at least a young and talented rotation. Almost all young, talented rotations that succeed, each of the youngsters has had at least a year of moderate success. Maybe next year, I'll change my tune, but this year, I highly, highly doubt it.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 5, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) They haven't had a winning season since '97. I applaud them for trying to turn around their culture of losing and reviving their club which has a rich history. And I think they're going to be an 80-win team at least in '11. I'll make a sig-bet with anyone willing to take it. As of right now, I might be willing to take that bet. Rotation = not good.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) If I get some time tonight or tomorrow, I can do a little digging into this. Really, it's just a matter of going through each box score and looking at what kind of error was made - not terribly difficult, just time consuming. You are a more patient man than I

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 08:33 PM) People who don't realize that Alexei is great on defense because they look at the "E" column make me bang my head against the wall, twice if they are Sox fans. He only makes those errors because, well, he actually has the ability to actually move to where the ball is. Most other shortstops just feebly run to where the ball is hit as it goes into the outfield and it ends up a single. So it's actually saying Alexei is less of a shortstop because he has elite range. Definitely agree. Just curious, though, how many of Alexei's errors were of the throwing variety? I'm only going off my admittedly-fuzzy memory, but I seem to recall him making some bad throws. Could totally be wrong.
