  1. Washington state had a very bad early outbreak, and isn't nearly done with this. California is still accelerating up the curve.
  2. The whole idea is absurd. I mean if China really wanted to sabatoge the West, why wouldn't they plant an illness IN THE WEST!?!?!?! The idea that they started an illness in their own country, shutdown their own economy, and then waited for it to go out west so that they could shutdown their economies and in response stop buying from places like China, therefore getting economically slammed, not once, but twice, is so mindboggling shortsighted, it is almost incomprehensible for it to even be considered.
  3. I can't believe Indiana was actually ahead of Illinois. Holcomb just seems to wait for IL and MI to do something, and then follows a couple of days later.
  4. Seeing as the length of the Wuhan lockdown is supposed to be 11 weeks, that seems to be a pretty good starting point, especially since our lockdown doesn't look nearly like China's.
  5. If only we had an agency that was tasked with planning for these eventualities at the federal level.
  6. This and the cook county jail story are sobering.
  7. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/AJ-Reed-Astros-retire-draft-class-2014-15167132.php#
  8. Wait, let me try. I don't know if Trump supporters are racist, but a whole lot of racism originates from them.
  9. In order to buy the idiotic conspiracy theory that some are trying to sell, you would have to buy the idea that the United States would have botched the response and ended up as bad as it has. If you would have theorized that the US would respond perfectly and minimize both the impact and the spread of this, the theory doesn't work.
  10. Those guys all knew how to close deals.
  11. If you direct deposited your tax return it will be way quicker, but no one really knows yet.
  12. We are looking at donating a chunk of ours to some local agencies.
  13. I don't believe it for a second, but it also doesn't really matter at this point. The US didn't take it seriously, and now we are knee deep in it. You would think they could have trusted their pandemic response team, oh wait.
  14. or that mutatinon is happening at some unknown pace.
  15. This is one time it is really nice to have a 12 and 14 year old around as the wife is literally teaching classes from home, and I am doing involved conference calls. They get it better than the little ones do, and make adjustments on the fly. LIttle kids can't do that.
  16. yeah, I think our school district was lucky we are in the lake effect snow belt, so we have to have plans for not being in school for up to a week at a time in general. This incident is pushing the limits though.
  17. The big picture craziness is that in the trading world every single firm is required to have a stringent Business Continuity Plan, for how to deal with a load of different situations where you don't have access to your normal office site for one reason or another. They have plans for hacks, electrical outages, pandemics, natural disaster, etc. In education? Nothing. It amazed me how much go figured out on the fly as the school systems realized this was going to be huge.
  18. We actually did it about two years ago as a way of not having to worry about the crazy amount of snow days we get. Our demographics mean they have similar problems with internet access for a fair amount of kids. They started giving kids chromebooks a couple of years ago for this eventuality. They have even put school buses with WIFI into neighborhoods to try to create hotspots for some of the kids who need them.
  19. If you are into that I would also recommend The Road to Jonestown, Heaven's Gate: America's UFO religion, Member of the Family, and Prophet's Prey.
  20. I was also ready to watch Under the Dome when it was on years back, but it died quickly and got awful reviews.
  21. This is teh 3rd week we have been doing it in Indiana.
  22. I have not watched that yet. I rarely pay for HBO. I got it during Game of Thrones and cancelled it after. My personal favorite of all of the King books is 11/22/63. The Hulu series is decent.
  23. Also, we dug out The Stand mini-series to rewatch. Its a shame the acting was so bad, because what a great book.
  24. If we get to 100,000 deaths, that is one in about 3300 people in this country. If we get to a million that is 1 in 330.
  25. I have not, but with as much I have enjoyed everything by Larson, if I come across it, I will pick it up. Haven't done a ton of Civil War reading. Most of what I have done is related to Gettysburg. I was enthralled with battle after visiting the battlefield about a decade ago. The George Washington book I read was the one by Ron Chernow.
