QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 01:13 PM) Any chance this game gets called by say 6pm with the option of being able to play 2 tomorrow or Sunday? Supposed to thunderstorm tonight. I have second row seats for tomorrow, so a doubleheader would be pretty awesome from my standpoint.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 01:17 PM) Yes and it is killing the private school option for the middle class especially in the south end of the city. The biggest thing killing education in Chicago is all of the people leaving.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 12:40 PM) I just dropped in and I see Kyle Schwarber is being targeted again? Come on. The Cubs are not going to sell rock bottom on him and frankly that's the only way I'd take him. He's looking like a 2 WAR player at best. His bat is not going to carry the rest of his flaws. He and Avi are similar except Avi can actually run. The only way they sell Babe is if they lost faith in him, which would be a red flag ala Giolito and the Nats.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) His first two years are starting to closely resemble Jose Reyes' first two years. Given, Reyes was about 3 years younger, but they are probably both along the same timeline as far as baseball experience is concerned. There is no harm in letting Anderson play the next 2-3 years at SS. If he doesn't stick, you use him as a super utility player and try the next guy. You don't sign Alcides Escobar, who has been probably the worst SS in the majors this year. And, the sad thing is, Escobar really hasn't seen much in the way of bad luck. His BABIP this year is .269, which is only 26 points off of his career BABIP of .295. He is legitimately a -1 WAR player now. If you're going to sign Alcides Escobar, you may as well sign Erick Aybar or Alexei Ramirez. You might as well sign Ozzie Guillen to play SS.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 11:09 AM) Hell, they could just sign Alcides Escobar (probably the best defensive SS in the game, him or Simmons) for $10 million/two years and target other more legit trade candidates instead of yet more utility infielders... Move Anderson or Moncada to CF, leave the other at 2B. Or Sanchez at 2b and both those guys in the OF with Avisail. Of course, the most obvious option is Leury Garcia at SS. The Sox aren't going to block one of their top prospects for an off of the street signing.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) How many kids can attend a place like Culver on a voucher? It says on their site only 1/4 of new students qualify for need based financial aid. I am really enjoying their website, I've never heard of this place. Culver Military Academy is an amazing institution. I don't know for sure, but my guess is they are not a voucher school. Like I said it is a nationally known institution. George Steinbrenner went there and sent his kids there. Most of the kids that go there are rich beyond means. Some kids get in via athletics scholarships. Honestly it is kind of unreal as the place is in the middle of no where in Klan country, but people still send their kids from all over the USA. LaLumiere is pretty similar. It is probably better academically, but less rigorous in the out of the classroom stuff. It has been put on the map for basketball in the last decade, but has always been one of the best academic schools in the country. Both CMA and LaLu are Ivy League feeders.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:55 AM) Do Indiana taxes pay for tuition into those private schools? Just checked Culver. No, and its 50k/year to send a kid there. Probably cheaper to pay property taxes. Indiana has a voucher system where you can get a voucher to participating privates. That doesn't exist in Illinois.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) I'm sure there are. And if you want to drive an hour from chicago directly west you could find some more affordable tax rates and housing as well. My point is people will gladly pay higher taxes to be close to chicago if there are excellent schools, clean and safe towns and robust village and commercial services. I can make it to chicago in around 10 min, 20 if I walk to the train. I gladly pay what I pay for that. Plenty of people I worked with in Chicago made the same commute I did. Those are the ones I will never understand. They pay a multiple of what people pay out here for a fraction of the return. I get all of the things you mentioned, as well as being 5 minutes from the beach. My annual tax payment is less than most people's monthly tax bill.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) There are plenty of great schools here in communities that are a fraction of the price of the Illinois burbs. Munster, Crown Point, Chesterton, Valparaiso, etc. are all A rated school districts in upper class towns in The Region. Past that there are a few amazing private school opportunities at the absolute top end of things. LaLumiere and Culver Military Academy are known nationwide for their academic programs. A Catholic School like Andrean which is really close to the state line attracts people from all over the place, including Illinois because of its programing. Marquette in Michigan City is A rated, and has a 100% college acceptance rate. Bishop Noll in Hammond is another one that comes to mind.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:42 AM) That doesnt answer the question. It's easy to look up the rating and see immediately why people move to communities outside of chicago even though the taxes are high. People arent scrambling to move close to 4's and 5's, they want 9's and 10's. There are plenty of great schools here in communities that are a fraction of the price of the Illinois burbs. Munster, Crown Point, Chesterton, Valparaiso, etc. are all A rated school districts in upper class towns in The Region.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:32 AM) Cool. How are the public schools? Also, how did you get a lower rate than everyone else around you? I need that tax lawyer http://www.stats.indiana.edu/dms4/propertytaxes.asp You are looking at gross rates. Property taxes on primary residences are capped at 1% of Net Assessed Value. http://www.in.gov/dlgf/8527.htm

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:15 AM) It's like a "regional" tax similar to what it'd be like to deal with a divisional team. I don't think there's any way that the Cubs offer a bunch more than Houston or NYY and that's what it'd take to send Q there. This is exactly the point I was trying to make. I think the Cubs pivot to an Archer or Gray because there is no way they can get a deal done for Q that isn't more expensive than one of those guys.

Can Illinois Survive?
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:00 AM) Property tax in chicago is pretty low. People are fleeing because of the school system, the ease of public transportation into the city and MUCH cheaper rent. Cities with main rail lines like western springs, Elmhurst etc have extremely high taxes but people are moving and building in droves because the school systems are awesome. Characterizing it as "really bad" is overreaction. Residential construction is way up and gentrification is increasing (which is forcing many people out). If improving the quality of housing and neighborhoods is a negative to you, then yes its very bad. Even in the City the property taxes are 6-7%, while in the burbs it can push 10. That isn't even starting to count the sheer amount of taxes and fees on pretty much anything and everything that the City has.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) What do you think they'll cap him at? 115? I think they try to let him go the entire season unless he shows signs of extreme fatigue that could risk injury or other problems.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) 100% agree. I think more often than not, you're better off selling your key assets separately. Now if there is a guy who your scouts are convinced is a sure fire superstar then I get it and it's possible soemone offers something just so overwhelming you have to take it. But typically teams only want to trade so many prospects (or only have so many) at one time that you're better off doing deals with multiple clubs. I think a guy like Robertson's value being adding to a guy like Q might mean that instead of getting a teams #2 guy, maybe it gets you there #1 guy, plus a little more at the end of the deal. In a Yankees deal, maybe it moves the needle enough that the top prospect is Torres, instead of Frazier.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) While that's true, Illinoisans can always point east and say "At least we're not Indiana." They can laugh and say that, and then cut their gigantic tax bill check, meanwhile getting absolutely nothing for it. Illinois is a disaster right now.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 29, 2017 -> 08:25 PM) If Chicago has failed as a city then Bill Self has failed as a NCAA basketball coach. It has its struggles, people are walking away, but it's still among the best around. Chicago might present a great cover, but the fiscal situation is about as bad as there is in the country, outside of maybe a place like Detroit which has actually filed bankruptcy. Chicago is taxing everything in sight just to stay afloat, and residents are fleeing like rats. It is really bad right now.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) There's a very good chance Archer won't be available. There probably aren't many "guys like Archer" that will be available. And if Archer were, he would cost a lot as well more than likely. My point being is there will likely be a "rivals premium" built into a deal if someone like the Cubs, Detroit, Minnesota etc calls and wants to ask about Q.

QUOTE (Soha @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) In the past I would have agreed with you. But it's all about the rebuild now isn't it? I think Jerry's too old to let things like this get in the way. I'm envisioning a conversation where Hahn tells Jerry that we have 2 good offers. The better offer is from the Cubs for Jimenez +. I just don't see Jerry saying to take the worse offer because I don't want Quintana helping the Cubs. That in itself is hurting the White Sox. I think they're above that now. Maybe I'm wrong? And boy is the need ever there. The Cubs probably need Quintana more than any other contender in baseball does. The Cubs may need Q worse than anyone else, but I don't see them being willing to pay what it would take for Hahn to be able to do that deal. I think the Cubs would find a better price for a guy like Archer than they would for Q.
