2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Answering that absolutely goes back on your theory. Since when did money not matter to the White Sox, and since when would spending $60 million make them more likely to spend another $40-50 million? And you can still sign guys to $300k contracts. Not bad cash to a 16 year old. And these 16 year olds are so far away anyway. It's not like 4 years from now they are staples in your line up. a 19 year old, as well regarded as Robert, is far more attractive. I don't think the 2 year penalty is a hindrance to any team. It's the final dollars. In your made-up imaginary argumentative hypothetical the White Sox history isn't the same as it is today. My theory doesn't change at all, the circumstances do.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) One of them should be getting AB's at the major league level, imo. We aren't a contending club, so this is the time to see if someone can make it and May has played well enough in spring to get that chance. I'd bet money they will get a chance. With Avi and Burjos both in starting roles, plus the inevitable give away of Melky, jobs will open up. That part I am not worried about. I am more worried about spring training being a fluke for guys like May.

Predict the 2017 Opening Day Roster
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) Guys, it is really simple. The dudes with options are going to get optioned. The dudes without options are going to make the team. This is a punt year for the Sox and they may as well give Davidson, Leury, Sanchez and Ynoa a shot rather than giving them away. It really comes down to the last man on the squad and whether they go with Asche or Liriano for the last spot. With Tilson starting on the DL, and most likely Rodon as well, here is my guess: 1B: Jose Abreu 2B: Tyler Saladino 3B: Todd Frazier SS: Tim Anderson C: Omar Narvaez CF: Peter Bourjos LF: Melky Cabrera RF: Avisail Garcia DH: Matt Davidson Bench: INF/OF Leury Garcia, INF Yolmer Sanchez, C Geovany Soto, INF/OF Cody Asche SP 1. Jose Quintana 2. James Shields 3. Miguel Gonzalez 4. Derek Holland 5. Dylan Covey Bullpen: RHP David Robertson, RHP Nate Jones, RHP Zach Putnam, RHP Jacob Petricka, RHP Michael Ynoa, LHP Dan Jennings, LHP Corey Luebke Jacob May, Nick Delmonico, Danny Hayes, and Liriano (if he clear waivers) will be the first wave of players to come up when Asche is inevitably DFA'd, 25 man guys hit the DL or are traded. Each of them (sans maybe Liriano) will ML at bats with the Sox this year. This is exactly how I see it. If and when some of the guys do continue to fail, you will still have the optioned guys to replace them. If you do the opposite, you might not have these other guys around if the guys with options were to fail first.

Lucas Giolito
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) Baseball is a game that is all about adjustments and young guys who have not made the proper adjustments yet will look worse. Keith Law said that he has doubts whether Moncada will be able to hit the inside pitch, but how often has he actually watched him? There are definite concerns with Moncada but the talent is clearly there to at least be an above average regular in the majors. The information in those discussions is important. A guy whose biggest knock is immaturity is a better bet than a guy with actual mechanical problems, as a pure example. Some things are much easier to fix than others. The larger and more complex those fixes are, the less likely they are to be over come. A guy with control problems is much easier to fix than one with control and mechanical problems, for example. If it were my money, I'd put way more money on Moncada being a star than Giolito. Doesn't mean things can't be overcome or the like, but the concerns are still valid.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) Again, this is crazy talk. Yes, the capital gains tax will be less, but they are going to end up spending more in taxes due to inheritance tax if JR dies before the sale than they would pay on capital gains plus they will still have to pay capital gains on top of what they paid in taxes on the inheritance. Taxes will have nothing to do with the sale of this team, and even if it is a driver, it would drive them to sell sooner than later. The wild card in all of this is a Donald Trump Presidency. You know he is looking to destroy the captial gains and inheritance taxes. JR is smart enough to realize that any changes that happens in those areas could well be quickly overturned with a new President and Congress, and try to get something done in a limited time frame.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) The other piece to this equation is Otani. If he does end up coming over this winter as he has said he is going to do, and MLB sticks to its guns that there is no exception for him, someone is going to get him for a steal. The teams that are not making a splash on J2 will have a the best shot (Sox and Orioles for instance). So even if the Sox go all out for Robert in the 2017/18 J2 period and miss, they could have a really nice consolation prize in Otani. I hadn't given any thought to him. Has their been any talk of when he is expected to try to come over with the new rules?

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:52 AM) By some accounts, the Sox did make the strongest offer to Tanaka in the international free agent market. They would not give him the opt out after three years the Yankees gave him though which was the differentiator. The Sox have shown the willingness in the past to make a big splash internationally (Tanaka, Abreu, Soler) when they felt it made sense. They haven't always gotten their guy, but thats not all because of the money they have offered. So, its not completely out of character for this org to spend big internationally. I think they are going to be a big player for Otani when he comes over. I want so say the Sox were eight figures under the Yankees offer IIRC. Seems like by a year and maybe $20-30 million? I do remember the Yankees destroying our offer quite clearly.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) White Sox once set a record when they signed Joe Borchard. Did anyone really expect the White Sox to give Jose Abreu the biggest contract in team history? They flew to Japan and were negotiating with Tanaka. I don't think anyone is assuming the White Sox will sign Robert. I think we are assuming that if he is eligible before the next signing period, the White Sox are still very interested and would be willing to do something they have never done. Obviously it depends on the ultimate price, but a lot of stars are aligning just like with the Abreu signing. And if the White Sox had done what they had never done and had already blown through their pool by $30 million, do you really think that would make them more likely to sign Robert? Absolutely. I think the teams who are already out for the next two years realize that Robert is quite literally their last chance at a quality signing for the next two years. I think that factor makes a team who is out as of July 2 much more likely to push the bidding higher knowing that this is their last chance for two years.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:34 AM) Rebuilding doesn't seem like a White Sox thing either, but clearly that's happening. I don't think you can simply assume the way we've operated in the past in indicative of how we'll operate in the future. I think it is lunacy to just assume because we changed in one area, than to assume suddenly this is a franchise that is going to blow away free agency, and international market. History is a much better indication than just because of one thing.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:35 AM) The Padres are also paying another $54M to players no longer on their roster, including sending some money to the White Sox to offset some of that $90M. The numbers are adjusted for retained salaries.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:20 AM) They are already about $30 million over their pool. So they have another $30 million in penalties. I really doubt they can go too high with this guy. Another $15-20 million to write to the player, and $15-20 million to write to the league, doesn't seem like a Padres thing. Doesn't seem like the White Sox thing either.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) But none of the top payroll teams can sign Robert. It's very similar to the Abreu situation. If it's us against the Padres, I'll take my chances that we can win the bidding war. To bmags point, the Padres have already spent a f***ton of money on international free agents in the last 12 months. At some point they'll run out of cash, whereas we have spent very little in this area. The Padres have been winning player after player. The White Sox haven't. I'd bet on the team that has a history.

Predict the 2017 Opening Day Roster
QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 12:05 AM) OK, I'll bite. Even though I'm not a big supporter of the Prospect Industrial Complex that overvalues "tools" and undervalues actual outcomes, help me understand why I shouldn't hate that suggested trade. Here's what I see out of that trio you suggest: Rutherford: 130 measly PA in Rookie Ball means he's lightyears away from The Show. Piles of "golden gods" DOMINATED Rookie Ball, only to ultimately end up working @ Home Depot. Hell, even Korey (with a "K") Zangari hit more HR than this guy @ Rookie Ball. Kaprelian: 3 measly games @ A+ means he's lightyears away from The Show, & still has a lot to prove before he's an actual prospect. Mateo: An "amazing" 99 wrc+ in A+ ball (2nd exposure to the level) last year. For reference, the much-hated Charlie Tilson had a wrc+ of 121 in his 2nd go-around @ A+, with a lower K rate. On top of all of this, Yankee prospects are generally suspects, in that they're overhyped in a lot of cases. So, again, why should the top SP available in trade be stupidly given away for a pile of A ball bums? For me, no Torres in the trade = no Quintana for the Yankees, full stop. And even at that, Torres still hasn't made the jump past AA with his prospect status intact. In all honesty, the Yankees prospects have yawning flaws, or are too far away from The Show for my liking, or have not shown themselves to be superior to extant members of the SOX system. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 07:41 AM) Couple things: 1. Good players tend to have good numbers throughout their MiLB careeers. Davidson, OTOH, only had good numbers in extremely offense-skewed assignments. (In the California league, & in Reno.) 2. There never was a chance that he was ever going to become a starter in The Show. He simply strikes out too much. Whoever thought he was ever going to become a starter allowed this Front office to lie to them. Again. 3. His former "Too 100 Prospect" status should be a cautionary tale for those who want to give away Q for "Top 100 Prospects" who are flawed. 4. I sincerely hope that Davidson does well, as I do for all SOX players. I simply don't see it happening for him. I have to laugh at the contrast between your posts here. Davidson was everything that Rutherford, Kaprielian, and Mateo weren't according to the first post. He had proven he could put up numbers at all levels of the minors. If you actually look at his minor league OPS's, his best year was actually in South Bend, which I know personally is a terrible hitters park. His second best number was at Mobile. He put up big homer, double and RBI numbers at every stop in the minors. He also put up big OBP numbers in all of those stops in the minors.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) My point is that it doesn't matter. They are capable of outspending the Padres if they want Luis Robert. Capable? Sure. But they just don't historically outbid everyone for players. Even a guy like Abreu had an element of fluke to him. None of the top payroll teams had a place for Jose to play, which left the White Sox as a tall midget. They made a bid on Soler, but were significantly outbid by the Cubs. That is much more typical of the White Sox in the open market. They come in second much more often than they come in first.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) Wasn't Maitan considered the top prospect in this past year's class and he only got $4.25M? Obviously Robert is a different situation given his age and proximity to the majors, but I don't see him getting anything close to Moncada money. Teams historically have been more willing to spend on Cuban players as opposed to the 16 year olds out of places like the DR and Venezuela. My guess is that it has a lot to do with the fact that not only are the Cuban players old, but they are also exposed to professional baseball environments where they play against real competition, instead of just being prepared for showcases to show off their tools. You are getting a more known quantity out of Cuba.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 07:44 AM) They really aren't competing with very rich organizations. If they want Robert, they can go get him. It's that simple. I've outlined how in multiple posts and even wrote an article for FutureSox about the prospects of doing so. The Padres have a $55 million payroll for 2017. The White Sox have a $90 million payroll. It would be very easy to argue that the Padres should be the early signing favorite for a few reason. #1 they already have gone over the caps this session, and literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain by bringing in every single player they can before June 15. They also have a lot less payroll spent in this period giving them the ability to spend a bit more than the white Sox have. According to the Forbes list, the Padres actually have a slight overall revenue advantage as of 2016, so the $35 million difference in payroll is significant as to their relative spending abilities.

Because he really hasn't proven anything, there is no need to rush him to the majors. Let him and Engel force their way on to the major league roster via Charlotte.
