2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) No, but I mean league wide. Michael Ynoa got a ton of money as a 16 year old. No one really mentions him much here, although he's on the team. These 16 year olds aren't going to come into play anyways for probably at least 5 or 6 years. I read an article that the average development time for a player from the DR is 8 years. You need to have them, but it is a long ways off. If Hostetler was the guy who said Robert was the best prospect on the planet, would you change your mind? I mentioned him a couple of days ago actually. Would a future back of the bullpen reliever be worth giving up two years worth of signings for?

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 02:59 PM) HOU, OAK, ATL. STL, WAS, SD, CIN, CUBS, SF, LAD, KC will all be in the can't offer more than 300k boat this coming period. The first 6 would be in the same position as the White Sox if they spent a ton before 6/15, and not be able to offer more than $300k 7/2/18. That's 1/3 of the league for this year, and there has already been lots of agreements and teams with not much to play with anymore. Assuming the Sox haven't offered anyone $300k yet, they probably are only really punting on 1 year and not 2, and it's really not punting. They still will spend their money. Spending a couple million on a 16 year old hasn't really proven to be very successful has it? Ah yes, the old DA argument... The Sox spending $10 million on a 19 year old Cuban hasn't worked out has it?

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 02:31 PM) Do you really think there is much difference in the 30-50th ranked 16 year old vs. the 80-100th ranked? Using your own theory, the Sox won't sign the top guys anyways. So they go down another peg. Besides $300k probably will get you a little more than it used to. You just have to hope Paddy picks the right guys. Look at BP and BA and MLB.com ranking prospects over the years. They have a hard time with 22 year olds in AAA. If Robert lives up to anywhere near the hype, he's well worth it. I think the opposite. Since anyone can bid $300k it isn't much of a number anymore. All it takes is one of the remaining teams to bid $350 or $400k to knock about half of teams out of the bidding. I also think that because so many teams are out of the top bidding that they will be more likely to throw $300k out there to a guy who may really be a $150 or $200k guy because they aren't going to be able to spend their money on anything above that anyway. I mean, I get the White Sox are rebuilding here, but I can't seen them throwing off all of these different things that have defined them as a franchise for decades now. You guys have a lot more faith in the unseen than I do.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) They still will have their pool. They just won't be able to spend more than $300k on any individual player. Which means they are automatically out on something like the Top 50 players for each year.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) Sorry, I wrote it strangely, now that I read it again. My bad. What I meant to say was, yes, if he clears before 6/15 (who knows if that happens or not), the Sox have every reason to go big and sign him, and I'm guessing they will be very much in the mix. If he clears after, then the Sox have a very good shot at him in the same way they were able to get a lot better Rule 4 draft picks when those rules changed. Either way, the Sox are in it, and it makes a ton of sense to go get him. The Sox haven't done a rebuild like this since the late 1990's. The amateur scouting department has new leadership that has so far shown they don't do things the old ways - in fact they went into penalty range in the Rodon draft. The Sox have less teams to compete with due to current penalties for some teams. The team is projecting to dramatically decrease MLB payroll in this rebuild. The attitudes in the front office have shifted. While it's silly to say the Sox WILL do it, I think in this case it's equally silly to say 100% they won't. And if they sign him before 6/15, they won't be able to compete at all for the next two years, which means that advantage is largely wasted.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 12:20 PM) Actually, if you read the article, he mentions the Padres or Cardinals would seem to be the favorites pre-June 15 and Sox would seem to be the favorites after July 2 due to having more money to work in the hard cap period. Post July 2nd, where the hard cap comes in to play, more teams are eliminated from bidding big, and the money becomes very close between all of the teams, the White Sox chances go up by a large amount. The White Sox have an incredible case to sell Robert on, once money is largely eliminated.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 12:11 PM) I'm not saying they will sign this guy, but I think your stance of it being 100% out of the realm of possibility isn't accurate. Heck, when FutureSox interviewed Capra, he made clear they tend to like getting a bunch of guys few a few hundred K instead of a million most of the time, and then just once in a while break the bank. That's pretty much this exact scenario - sign a guy like this and blow through the pool once, then spend two years getting guys for 200 or 300k. Add to that the fact that Badler is more connected in this realm than anyone, and he's hinting hard... I think there's a very real chance it happens. If he is cleared before the 6/15 cutoff, Every good reason the Sox could have to sign him, someone else out there has a better reason to outbid the White Sox. Even if you want to make the giant leap of faith that the Sox would be willing to break their caps for the first time ever, there are teams who have already blown through their caps who are bigger spenders who are more likely to make large bids, and even outbid the White Sox here. That is without getting into the fact that this would be a 180 degree shift from their history here. I get that Balder is writing something here, but there just seems a lot he is leaving out of the story.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 01:15 PM) This is such a problem. I don't have a problem giving up the long drunken Friday/Saturday nights I have a problem giving up the random 2-3 IPAs I have after a long work day with a friend/girlfriend. This has always been my weakness.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) White Sox did bid $25 million on Soler. That was also before the current signing structure which would have meant losing their international signings freedoms.

David Price Reports are Surgery NOT needed..
I can't see this pushing Boston to make a deal for Q. They have a long term deal in place with Price. Maybe they go after a placeholder for a year, but not a guy like Q.

2016-17 NHL Thread
QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 08:10 AM) Yeah, that would have been a nice score. Just some good 3rd line scoring depth. That said, really happy where this team is right now. Deepest they have been in a while. And the stars are playing like stars. That makes everyone else's job easier to do as they don't have to try to do too much. Roll over all four lines and go at it.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 08:56 AM) Yeah the Padres could continue adding to their stacked 2016-2017 international class. This is true. I would honestly put them as favorites over us. The Nationals are a big spending team out of the bunch that is over for this year. They know this is their last shot at prime players for two years (if cleared before 6/15)

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (pablo @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) Maybe a dumb question - but what if the Sox sign Robert to a 6 year deal and he spends the first two years in the minors? Would he only have 4 years left on his deal when he is brought up to the bigs? Similar question has come up with friends when discussing Moncada's contract. I know for Abreu he was signed for the 6/68 but he didn't spend any time in the minors so this didn't impact him. You can't sign these players to major league deals anymore. It is a minor league deal with a signing bonus that counts towards your international signing pool.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) Baseball AmericaVerified account @BaseballAmerica 27m27 minutes ago More The #WhiteSox look like the favorites to land ??star prospect Luis Robert: http://bit.ly/2mdDaaR The other thing (besides the idea that the Sox are going to do a complete 180 on what they have always done) that doesn't make sense to me here is why a team that is already over for the 2016-17 period wouldn't be willing to outspend the White Sox for this guy if he is the next Moncada?

Jake Peavy's VERY tough year
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 02:30 PM) What exactly did Peavy do to deserve your disdain? Dude was intense but he had a very serious injury and worked his ass off to overcome it and his Sox career is actually a lot better than people give him credit for. He made just 83 starts in a Sox uniform due to the injury and in those 83 starts he accumulated 10.8 fWAR. That works out to roughly 4 fWAR per full season pitched. That's pretty damn good. After the injury he had, I was super impressed that he was able to pitch again, even at a reduced skill level.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) For sure. Badler made it sound like they don't have commitments and are lying in the weeds. Lets say they plan on offering pretty much their entire pool to Robert after J2. He would be their only large expenditure. What people are saying is, if they agreed to a deal with him in the current period, he'd still be their top expenditure. It's the same thing. Their biggest expenditures have been Adolfo for $1.6 million and Josue Guerrero for like $1.2 million. They've had many for over $500K though. They could still sign 10 guys for $300K each if they wanted. Give me the chance at the potential superstar. Just because they aren't on the list for the biggest ones doesn't mean they don't have guys down the list already committed to.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) I think the Sox have a better chance if he gets cleared after 6/15 but they certainly have a chance if he does get cleared prior to 6/15. The Sox, or any team that has gone past the pool in the current period, have the same financial burden of signing this guy. The Sox may have a slight financial advantage given they haven't used all of their pool but that's immaterial in the grand scheme of things. The cost, as you have alluded to, is the penalty of being unable to sign significant players in future classes. Any singings that have happened in this class already are sunk costs. Regardless if a team is over and under the cap. The downside of Robert being cleared in this current class is A.) for more competition with more teams involved and B.) far bigger an expenditure without a hard cap and the 100% penalty. Would it be beneficial for the Sox for Robert to be cleared after 6/15? Yes, it seems so. Would the alternative rule them out as a destination for him? Not at all. If the team has agreed to any deals over $300k for July 2, 2017, they would have to go back and tell that player they aren't signing them now (assuming they sign Robert in this signing period) and risk future relationships with that trainer by reneging on the deal. That is in addition to missing out in the next class as well. For all of the debate over Tatis Jr, don't forget he signed for 800k.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) Would you rather sign a potential superstar or 10 mediocre prospects for the same amount of money? For me the answer is clear. Look up the list of guys who have signed for pennies on the dollar out of Latin America. Signing for a lot of money at age 16 isn't nearly as clear of an indicator as signing at 21 or even 18. I mean how you would like to spend $4.25 million on Michael Ynoa, so that you missed out on other guys who go on to be stars for a fraction of that price?

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) I really hope the Sox sign him. He's supposedly a premier talent and would definitely be a 1st round pick if he was draft eligible. All it will cost the Sox is money, they need to pull the trigger at whatever price. Again, this is not true.
