Recommendations sought: New England, with kids
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:34 PM) Looking like an August road trip to New England this coming summer. My wife and I, and kids aged 8.5 and 5 at that time. Who has any recommendations on things to do, places to stay, etc.? All ideas are helpful! Also we will be stopping to see Niagara Falls on the way to or from, so any recommendations on that are also happily accepted. Go hive mind! If you are going to do Niagara the best way to do it is to do the Canadian side. The best thing we did while up there was to sign up for an all-encompassing tour through our hotel. For a fraction of the price of doing each of the attractions individually (journey behind the falls, maid of the mist tour, etc) we got to do like 5 or 6 different things, plus we did them with our group only instead of with the general public. The best example was in the Maid of the Mist boat ride, there were only the 13 of us in our tour group, versus the hundreds that they cram on for a normal boat tour.

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:30 PM) These were all at least partial factors in a very close election. You can argue that Clinton shouldn't have been as vulnerable to them as she was and that a different candidate would still have beaten Trump, but it seems silly to just dismiss that they played any role at all. The problem is the idea that all of the factors that apparently beat the Democrats were unrelated to anything involving their Democrats, their policies or their candidates. The primary factors for their election's results are Hillary CLinton and Donald Trump.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:13 PM) Rabbit honest question, when did you start following politics? Being unaware of when the legislative battle for the ACA took place seems kinda crazy to me. And there it is. If you can't beat them, invalidate them.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:16 PM) Cool. Yeah I wasn't sure, but the point was - essentially - that he spent a lot more resources in the rust belt than he did in Texas. That is the crazy thing. He really didn't spend a lot of resources anywhere. Hillary outspent him about 2:1. Even in party money and PAC money, Trump got destroyed.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 02:06 PM) I didn't say there wouldn't be a loss, I just said it wont be that massive because Eaton was never that great at the plate. If the Sox are really going to fall from 20th to bottom 5 in run scored it will take more than just replacing Eaton with Tilson. Need a couple complete meltdowns from guys who contributed last year, these are predictions nobody seems willing to make though. "Hold them til deadline, they'll accrue more value" is incompatible with pessimistic team outlooks. You deserve a spot on a political campaign the way you are taking things out of context and spinning the into something else completely different that isn't being said. So much of this post is just flat out wrong, as are every other post where you try to apply a few posts into full encompassing expectations, and then on top of that assign them some sort of value to reality. I am not sure why you keep lashing out at everyone who disagrees with you, and then posting lies to try to make it valid.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) I don't believe Trump went to Texas, did he? A quick google search tells me that isn't true. In fact one story was actually asking why he was campaigning in Texas.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:54 PM) Well in 2015 Shuck had a .340 obp in limited PA's, so if Tilson can match that you'll barely notice Eaton is gone until you see Avi tripping over his shoelaces in RF. I dont think Tilson will, but I think he can BABIP and draw enough walks to keep himself above .300 obp. I think you guys overrated Eaton's contributions at the plate. Speaking of Shuck I saw what I think was him at Midway a couple days ago. Departures lane but he's still got the Sox plates flying proud on his (IIRC) Jeep. Adam Eaton hit 14 homers last season in about 700 PAs. Tilson has managed 19 HR in over 2000 MiLB ABs. Eaton also put up 29 doubles in that stretch. Tilson has put up 59 in over 2000 PA's. There is going to be a large loss in both ISO and OBP. Again, we are talking at least 50 to 75 OPS points, and that is if Tilson doesn't suffer any loss of speed from the Hammy tear last year. Tilson is a 4th OF in a starters clothing.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) I think Tilson can provide .300-.320 obp with a complete dearth of power and a couple legged out XBH. Maybe he cant I dont know, it has less to do with Tilson being good and more to do with Eaton being insanely overrated. Eaton's OBP has been over .360 for each of his 3 full seasons in MLB. He has also put up a SLG of .414 over his career, while Tilson has only been able to manage a .392 in the minors. That is already somewhere between 50 and 75 OPS points we are talking about.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) The white sox offense was 22nd (off memory, maybe 21st) last year in runs scored. They weren't good last year and they won't be good this year with a worse lineup. Maybe catcher is better offensively. Tilson also may have less speed this year which could effect what his BABIP can be. I hope he's better than Shuck, but we aren't talking about a significant driver in quality of offensive production there. Offensively Tilson is going to be much closer to JB Shuck than Adam Eaton. What I hope is that defensively he is closer to a real CF than Eaton or Shuck.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:46 PM) Because of the rust belt workers who bought what Trump was selling. The "white-lash". Whatever you want to call it. Honestly, that was an anomaly that Trump noticed and tapped into much more than it's indicative of future demographic trends. With all of the energy field workers in the state of Texas, and all of the manufacturing and industry they have down there, especially along the Rio Grande, the results are very different.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:44 PM) I'm just saying the idea that our offense has been completely neutered by firesale trades is wrong. The Sox infield of Frazier-Anderson-Lawrie/Saladino (inevitable injury)-Abreu is probably going to score a lot of runs this year. If Tilson has so much as a pulse at the plate he'll give Jewel-brand Eaton production with his bat. If Melky does what he did last year as a DH that wont be too bad. Eaton is so ridiculously overrated by a couple nice throws from RF its sick. Good on Hahn getting the deal he got for him, still cant believe it. I agree with whoever said in another thread that the Sox lost about 8 wins with the trades. I dont think any of those are coming from the offensive side though, more the obvious rotation downgrade from Sale to Holland and the looming disaster in RF. Read this sentence again. Nothing about Tilson shows that he will be anywhere close to Eaton.

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:39 PM) Well it was only 17 innings and he still managed to walk 10 guys in those innings (not good) so lets not get too carried away about his Aug/Sept splits. Sure, if you include the disaster. But after that, it got cleaned up.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:36 PM) For what it would take to actually convince a bunch of house republicans to impeach Trump would mean Trumps approvals would have to be below 15% i.e. worse than Nixon's. For that to happen, he will have needed to be in an insane obvious and self made scandal. Mere incompetence will not be enough. I have a feeling there will be plenty to impeach him for. More than there ever was for Bill Clinton.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:35 PM) You're right - they control the governors seat, the legislature, and none of that is likely to change any time soon. Unfortunately the GOP and legislature of Texas can't manipulate the popular vote nearly as easily as they can the legislature seats with gerrymandering. It actually makes perfect sense. If it weren't for the GOP efforts at the local level in Texas, it would be much more blue than it is now. The GOP can't stop progress, but they're really really good at slowing it down. So why did Michigan go to the GOP, with much less of those advantages and the same sorts of minority rates of population?

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:30 PM) I don't think he'd quit even if he were impeached and facing expulsion from office. He'd claim the process was crooked. Look at all these establishment politicians ganging up on him! "If both sides of the aisle hate him, he must be doing something right" Yeah, it is pretty easy to make that argument pretty convincingly too. Part of me just thinks he wouldn't want to give them the satisfaction of "winning".

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:28 PM) I think it's starting to crack. They are really expensive, and the re-sale sucks. You could have sat in the Club level last night for $16 plus fees on Stubhub. Lower Center for $48. I think they are over $200 each face value. I had some partial season tickets a long time ago. Last summer they were hounding me to buy some season tickets. First time they did that. But I agree about Lloyd. He was supposedly the guy who targeted Butler and Gibson. For drafting that late, those were great picks. The year he left, Teague was picked. One of the worst shooters in NBA history. That is step one. Next comes the no shows, then they start blowing through the waiting lists.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:19 PM) For instance, yeah Trump won a few traditionally blue states, but Texas has never been closer over the last 30 years. Voter suppression is a GOP tactic to defend against the eventuality where red states flip blue due to minority demographics. See that's where I can't buy in. If the GOP is undertaking these successful efforts in states it controls, Texas shouldn't be in play at all because the GOP owns it. They control it by a 2:1 margin in the legislature. If their efforts were so successful, the margins wouldn't be shrinking there, but them gaining in states where they have less control.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:15 PM) He simply wouldn't admit to losing at anything. In a situation where someone else controlled his fate? He absolutely would quit sooner than let someone else beat him. For example if it ever did get to the point where he could be beaten in impeachment, he would quit first, or at least I think so.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 01:02 PM) Could his ego let him do that? I think his ego could excuse him quitting sooner than it could excuse him losing at something. At least he could say he walked away on his own terms.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:48 PM) Steve, He wont get impeached. Impeachment would be from the House, and the House is controlled by Republicans. Even if he somehow was impeached, he wont get convicted in the Senate. Its more likely he just quits. Now this is MUCH more realistic than impeachment. With as thin of skin as this guy has, I could see a scenario where he quits just out of spite.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) How do you explain Robertson's strong finish to the season after August 12th? He only gave up 2 runs over his final 16 innings 16 ip , 11 hits, 7 walks, 22 k's, only 2 ER to finish the season That is rock solid production This is also worth mentioning. If he really were in a final burn decline, why would he improve that much over the last two months of the season? The answer in my eyes is that he got healthy back to himself.

Ken Rosenthal: Trade Deadline Will be Insane
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:35 PM) Oh that's pretty easy. He's been getting worse every year the last three years and last year he ran hot/cold all season falling apart at the most inopportune times. And his stuff doesn't look half as good evidenced by his exploding walk rates and near doubling of the line drive rate off his fastball. You can tell me all you want about his terrific 2011 season, but I dont think it has much bearing on what he'll do in the midst of a clear decline at age 32 with mounting injuries exacerbating his problems. I know you don't like numbers, but they don't really support what you are selling. He had a great 2015 statisically, that included his career best k/BB ratio, a career low BB/9, and his second lowest FIP. Really the only number that really jumped out in 2016 is his walk total. Nothing else was that far out of line when you give some slack for smaller sample sizes for relievers.

Discussion: How the Sox compete in 2017
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 12:43 PM) I think they likely will sign someone to a minor league deal as depth in case there is an injury early in the season and you don't want to call up Giolito or Lopez yet. There are definitely a few names that could be of interest in the Sox eyes. For example for a super cheap price, I wouldn't mind a guy like Jake Peavy around to show some of the kids how to compete with intensity. Others of note, Matt Harrison, CJ Wilson, Doug Fister, Henderson Alvarez, Jered Weaver Somebody to suck up some innings and be a warm body.
