  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) The mandate was not in the least a loss of personal freedom since the government had the right to tax certain products and offer rebates or tax credits for the purchase of products beforehand and afterwards and this is exactly what the Supreme Court said. The Supreme Court has made a lot of decisions that weren't right. Hopefully like many of them, they will realize their mistake, and not leave them to fester for centuries as in some cases.
  2. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 02:11 PM) There's now way this kid takes that. They could sign him for whatever they want. Just won't be able to spend over $300,000 per guy next year. That's a problem though. It's also a waste because if you are going to go over, you should sign like $30 million worth of players or it isn't worth forfeiting the next year. Yeah, I really doubt this kid is worth missing out on two years worth of signings for.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) And has a top ten CF prospect ready to step in its place? Position players prospects would be great. I'd love it personally.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 02:04 PM) Man I'd hate to have a rebuild like KC had. Terrible failure that was. It is the three decades before that which worry me.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) The pirates window is closing? We talking about the team we are crying about to include their two top hitting prospects in addition to their 2 top 50 pitching prospects and have the best outfield in baseball? The one who has to trade its best player for financial reasons to make a trade for Q?
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 02:01 PM) Did Oregon get hit pretty hard? I missed that http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2...tions-penalties
  7. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 01:51 PM) Definitely, but they have been trying to fill 3 holes every year on a limited budget, now when they are looking to full three holes they are going to have $70M to spend instead of 10. Another piece to consider is that due to the Sox stadium, it is almost impossible to attract FA pitching to the team without a serious overpay. Hitters are easier to attract due to the bandbox reputation. I never see a scenario where the Sox are outspending the Yankees, Cubs, and Dodgers of the world to obtain the top talent. The gap has gotten to be so large there. We have historically been great at being runners up in those areas, at best.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Funny thing about cubs is they are the only team to ever get good again on young players and also only team model to ever have success. I am glad you said that. Realistically our rebuild, if it succeeds, will look much more like Pittsburgh or Kansas City, both of whom are already seeing their windows closing. Pittsburgh and KC both had narrow windows with which to bring in talent before their lack of resources meant that players would be leaving and their times at the top ending. There wasn't a lot of extra money to spend into the talent arriving to extend that window.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 01:35 PM) Why not? And the Cubs have spent on international players, but that is nothing the Sox cannot do with a significantly reduced MLB payroll. They can't anymore anyway. The Rules have changed, and the Sox are in the small cap room bunch even.
  10. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:59 PM) Easier to do than trying to spend on a lineup: 9 (8 in NL) spots vs 5. It is also why the Sox rebuild is more likely to fail than the Cubs. Cubs fans allowed them to spend during their rebuild. That isn't going to happen here.
  11. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) Sure, the Cubs built up there position players, but they also failed to develop any pitching. They caught a break when Arrieta started pitching up to his prospect pedigree and went out and spent money on Lester, Lackey, and Hammels to fill in the holes in their roster. The Sox are going to have to spend money to fill in gaps in the future either in the rotation or in the field, the advantage they have now compared the past few seasons is that they have been hamstrung in FA as they hovered around their max payroll. Now with a cost controlled rotation and a few cost controlled batters they will have more money in FA to pursue their primary targets. Which is another area where the White Sox have failed catastrophically in recent years.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:21 AM) Obamacare is a weird example anyway because surveys find that people don't like "Obamacare" but they generally like all of the individual parts of Obamacare if they're described to them, except for the individual mandate. The mandate is by far the largest loss of personal freedoms since imminent domain was expanded to include pretty much anything commercial at the expense of pretty much anyone.
  13. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) It only makes sense if we don't go over our cap. Otherwise we should have just gone all out and tried to sign everyone this period. And I see no reason for Robert to settle for that when other teams can and will offer him so much more. The ONLY thing that the Sox MIGHT have is the ability to put him in the majors today and start his clock. But even with that, San Diego could offer him the same PLUS more money as they are already over the caps.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 11:51 AM) i also think a lot of what keeps Saban in Alabama is total control. I think he realized controlling 18-22 year old kids making zero money is a hell of a lot easier than controlling millionaire men who are the best at what they do. He got his personnel control in Miami and his results were really less than spectacular (to put it mildly) and he decided it wasnt for him And when you bring up Carroll, you really have to wonder if he would have had the nuts to jump to the NFL again if USC hadnt been sanctioned from all of the Bush era nonsense that caught up. I also think Chip Kelly only left because he knew Oregon was about to get hit too. Heck, that is probably the only thing that is going to get Saban to leave AL and that is NCAA problems.
  15. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:38 PM) I'm trying to get in touch with Badler. Signing this guy doesn't make any sense for White Sox. They have pool room but if they use it to go over and sign this kid, then they join the group of teams that can't spend this coming July 2nd. That's a problem because they are already linked to guys for the next signing period. If they do this prior to next signing period, it's a huge waste of resources as much as I'd like to add him. If he gets pushed to the 2017-2018 period starting on July 2nd, the most he can possibly sign for is $10 million and that would be someone's entire bonus pool. If he gets cleared to sign, I would guess it'll be a team like San Diego who blew past their limits for this year and can't sign a guy next year anyway. Athletics, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Padres, and Reds went over this past year and would be most likely teams to sign him. Glad I am not the only one who didn't understand the connection there.
  16. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:30 PM) Odds are that at least half the guys the Sox have acquired never make the ML rotation. Two years ago there were high hopes for guys like Tyler Danish and Spencer Adams, now those guys are long shots to ever start a ML game. I think Kopech has a high shot of being a late inning guy down the road, but am hopeful he can prove me wrong and be a rotation guy. Scouts have already started to sour on Giolito and started moving him down their rankings boards, but there is a lot of opportunity in front of him yet to regain his form. There is no way the Sox will have too much pitching, when the Sox are ready to compete again they are going to need to make some moves in the trade market and pitching assets can be extremely valuable. It is also really obvious that not all position players will hit. Talking about guys like Collins, Moncada, Basabe, etc is nice, but some of those guys will bust as well. We need nine position players to fill a starting line up. We need just as many position players to fill out a roster as we do pitchers. If we want to learn one lesson from what the Cubs did it shouldn't be that these things are fail safe, it is that young position players are getting harder and harder to find to fill a roster with. It should also be completely obvious from the last 10 years where we spent year after year trying to find a 2B or a 3B, or a C, or OF's that it isn't as easy as people seem to think it is. Otherwise we wouldn't have failed to do it for the last 10 years.
  17. QUOTE (southside guru @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) I heard from a Phillies fielding guy that Moncada can't play the middle. Body looks the part. but the hands don't work! My bet - he's heading to 3b of the OF One theme we have seen over the years is that the Cuban players don't get drilled in the fundamentals the same way that the American kids do. We saw it with older players like Alexei and Abreu, and we saw it with Dayan. That doesn't mean he can't do it, but he will definitely need reps.
  18. Reading the story it seems like the link is speculative in nature, in that the Sox have some pool room, and have signed similar players in the past, but not that there is any real connection to him. Does anyone out there know how much international pool room we have left?
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) Yeah, but I think they are implying he's chicken to go back again. Who knows how he would have done if he stuck around at Miami or if he decided to go now (he might have learned somethings). Either way, just cause he's dominating the college ranks (and making this many championships, regardless of the outcome tonight is dominating, imo) doesn't mean he's chicken if he doesn't try going pro. I think people forget how close it was that Saban ended up as the Bears head coach (IIRC, Angelo was very close to convincing him to come to Chicago). Regarding Chip Kelly, I am curious what he will do. Does he stay in the pro's or does he go back to college? If he goes back, where does he go? Does he go back to Oregon or does he think its a better sign of respect if he heads somewhere else. I'd have to imagine if Notre Dame struggles, they'd throw a lot of money at Chip Kelly (to replace Brian). Some rumors that he's going to Cal. Why can't Nick Saban just be enjoying the job and life he has at Alabama? Plus can we get past the idea of using thing associated with girls as an insult for men? It is the 21st century, haven't we gotten past that? (Bill Simmmons that is, not you Jas)
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) Funny enough while we had more dead last rankings we also had 3 top 5 finishes in the AL for runs scored. 2006, 2008, 2012. Which are also the years we were most competitive over the last decade.
  21. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:38 AM) I'd take that package all day Bell and Newman project to be solid, even if unspectacular mlb regular and I'll roll with the potential of Keller and Glasnow anyday I want position player just as much as every Sox fan does, but you can never have too much pitching. Not all of our prospects will pan out, especially as starters. Building up potential bullpen arms is important too At some point you run into diminishing returns for sure. You only have so many slots in the minors and so much instruction time that you can give out. It also completely ignores that a lack of positional talent is what got us to this point in the first place and we are back to trusting this team to draft and develop position players.
  22. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) It does not have to be Meadows or bust What if the Sox were hypothetically offered: Glasnow, Keller, Bell, Newman That is not happening, but how do you reject that offer? By this point in the Sox trade journey you have to have a star potential position player headline a deal. More pitching doesn't help this rebuild, instead it only prolongs it and makes the odds worse of this working
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:58 AM) It sounds like you did her a favor by holding on to her as long as you have, a firing would have been justifiable a while ago. We pretty much had to have this moment with my mom. It isn't easy, but you have to choose what is right.
  24. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:21 AM) Am I the only one who really really does not want a package centered around Glasnow? No. The only way I want to see a deal with PITT is if we get Meadows back to start it.
  25. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) I think you're undermining the value of Kopech and potential Basabe brings. The Sale deal is not a loss for the White Sox nor a win for the Red Sox. The Basabe of today would have been the White Sox top prospect a year ago.
