Why Do KW/RH Get to Keep Their Jobs?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 10:01 PM) The problem is that Gonzalez (and even Lawrie) will get more expensive...and how much would he actually be worth in trade to other teams? The Humber comparison (with Gonzalez) is a good example. He was effective for X amount of time, but he was too effective for a stretch to trade (see Feldman and Garza) without damaging the rotation and eliminating competitiveness. Humber was even more of a reclamation project like Loiaza, but the point stands as the acquisition of Contreras might have been the best of the KW regime. You ride Humber too long and get nothing in return, or you just suffer "bad luck" like we did with Jenks, Crede, Floyd and Crain and they end up with no or diminished value. A clearly rebuilding team makes those deals 100% of the time, turning rebounding veterans (see how we originally obtained Floyd for Garcia) into younger players with high potential upside but a significant bust rate as well. I think the main difference is that Gonzalez has a history of being effective, while Humber had a history of being defective. That being said, if I got a decent offer for Gonzalez, he'd be gone in a heartbeat.

Who stay...who goes???
QUOTE (Deadpool @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 10:26 PM) Hahn admitted this morning going for it every year isn't working and free agent additions haven't lead to winning. Even if they don't completely blow it up, they're going to do closer to that then "go for it" The thing is, if you look at it, they didn't really "go for it" last year either, as they kept all of their top prospects, and they didn't go all in for the free agent market.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 09:35 PM) I am not much of a hockey fan. I am getting some hockey tickets for a friend as a gift and I want to get some opinions on where people would prefer to sit. Would you rather sit in the second row rinkside in a corner or center ice about 12 row back? His team would defend twice on the corner side. Center ice.

Renteria to Replace Ventura
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 07:54 PM) I really think they won't move Moncada because of the investment in him but who knows when it comes down to pulling the trigger on Sale or Quintana. I want to take our time with Collins. Let him start at AA next year and work his way through the system, especially if we rebuild. There's no longer a reason to push guys faster through the system if we're rebuilding. I do think Collins could be up next year at some point. Next year will be really fun for me if we rebuild and there's a ton of prospects to follow and watch debut. I'm just not sure if only moving Sale is good enough to push this team into the playoffs. This free agent market sucks, so there's not a ton of options to chose from to help fill some holes. If you only moved Sale and got Benintendi, Kopech, Devers, Rodriguez and Vazquez, is that enough to propel this team into contention moving forward for years to come? I'm not so sure because you're banking on prospects working out which most of the time they don't in these types of trades. I'm still trying to figure out if Hahn is trying to include JBJ in the deal as well and what that would do to the deal. I thought I read somewhere they wanted JBJ or Betts which isn't happening most likely let alone midseason. Taking our time with Collins doesn't involve starting him at AA. Start him at A ball Winston Salem again, and let him have a couple of more months in A ball before making the decision to push him to AA.

Renteria to Replace Ventura
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 07:09 PM) I really think he'll bounce back. Now, he's not hitting .330 or anything but I could see him back around .260-.280 and 5-10 more doubles. His double total was really freaking low the first half. The key to this lineup was Abreu's struggles. He was much better the second half and should be fine to start next season. But I'm hoping they do a complete rebuild and ship all of these players out and have a ton of young promising prospects. Don't sleep on NYY. They're going to be all over Sale. Joel Sherman kept writing about it around the trade deadline. They're a very splashy franchise and getting Sale would be right up their alley. Now, if they're involved then so will Boston. That's our best hope is to get those two to bid against each other. The Yankees being involved in a Sale deal will be the best thing that could ever happen to the Sox if a Sale deal is going to happen. Either we will clean off their top prospect list, or we get Boston to push in a couple of guys they don't want to in order to top the Yankees. It is a win-win.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 05:11 PM) Who has made this argument that Trump cant claim deductions? Trump's entire campaign is based on his personal claim that he is a great successful businessman. Losing $900mil in a calendar year is not a "success" by most peoples definition. This has nothing to do with whether Trump should or should not have paid more taxes. That is the job of the IRS. When you claim that you can do better because of your business experience, you should expect people are going to look at your business experience. I am not an accountant, but I would be a lot of money that most people who are considered "successful" have not lost a billion dollars in their life, let alone in a single calendar year. Running the US govt isnt running a business. You cant just close it down and open under a new name. You cant just wave the magic bankruptcy wand and make your debts go away. We'd be having a much different discussion if the reason Trump's tax liability was reduced because he gave $900 mil in charitable deductions. Lets be honest, if Trump was actually successful and donated that type of money, hed likely be the next President. But from all current evidence, Trump is not that successful nor that charitable. I mean come on, you are really going to compare losing $900mil, with voluntarily giving money away to charity. This is really where we are going? The original argument centered on paying taxes, and avoiding taxes. I am glad to see the left wing finally admit the Mitt Romney was right though.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 04:46 PM) I get detesting the right wing spin on it but if you (not you personally) think HRC isn't claiming losses too you're mistaken. Everybody who's as wealthy as these two has an accountant who's going to legally evade taxes as best they can. This is an industry. When presidential candidates do it people go nuts because they're uninformed (not you personally). I am sure if anyone here uses an accountant and he/she said, "You can use X to get a write-off" nobody would say, "No, I'd rather pay my fair share." Taxes are incredibly steep on the wealthy and the appropriation of them by our government is embarrassing. Power to Trump and HRC for taking advantage of the law that's made to protect the private citizens. I don't care if Trump is super wealthy, or a scumbag or orange or whatever insult you can put next to him, he's still afforded the same rights as anyone else. They took a million dollars in charitable deductions in the last set of tax returns released, which means that was a million dollars they didn't pay taxes on. So no, they are not paying everything they could be paying either.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) Here's the other problem. Pay to Play indicates that Banks actually made money. But here's the thing people always seem to forget - the TARP funds were paid back by nearly every bank who received them, with interest/returns, to the government. The banks LOST money on TARP. The only banks who didn't pay it back are the ones that went out of business. So even if the chart is true - which I don't really believe (one article noted this was in a folder called "Pay to Play" which they would never have done) - it would be like saying they donated money in exchange for losing more money. plus a lot of banks were forced to take TARP money to hide the ones that really needed it.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 03:49 PM) Well that presupposes that people put the same amount of thought into every decision (which I dont necessarily think is true.) It also would be more problematic for Trump than Hillary because Trump completely switched political ideologies at least 1 time as compared to Hillary just doing dumb things that everyone else was doing (not that "everyone else is doing it" is a good excuse, just better than completely changing who you are.) If the rationale is that Hillary isn't putting thought into voting for bombing countries, we are all in a lot of trouble.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) I am not making any assumptions. I never said anything about Trumps or Hillarys motives. I merely said that people get too caught up in someone changing positions, instead of trying to determine if the change of position is good or bad. That is all secondary to the fact that the initial decision is WAY more important when you are President. You don't get the luxury of changing your mind down the road to a more politically friendly decision. That history of making wrong decisions is more vital than in any other job. THAT is why it is important here. You can't unbomb a country.

Why Do KW/RH Get to Keep Their Jobs?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) The issue was that they made some high profile investments in talent to the end of creating an immediate winner, but left some gaping holes on the roster despite the fact that there were affordable (in a relative sense) solutions readily available to fill those exact holes. Desmond was an obvious one, but the three elite OFers (and arguably Dexter Fowler) were another. Yes, the prices that the Sox would have had to pay would have been greater than what teams ultimately got them for, but aside from Upton, all of them were signed for substantially less than market norms would have suggested. So, if you're going to dump real talent for 2 years of Frazier and 2 years of Lawrie, if you're going to replace your internally popular catcher with a aging, short-term platoon (which, theoretically, should have been a substantial short-term improvement), why not also take low-hanging fruit and finish the job? Alone, Rollins/Latos/Jackson were not bad signings -- they were shots in the dark to try to find bouncebacks, and good teams find tremendous value out of those types of diamonds in the rough every season. The issue was that they were signed to be relied upon, when there were CLEARLY better and more reliable options available. And while those options were substantially more expensive, they were available for great deals in terms of recent market history. It is funny that Rollins/Latos/Jackson gets brought out, but Miguel Gonzalez is never included in that, despite the fact he was the exact same sort of signing. The difference is that he worked out so it doesn't fit.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) I dont know. But what I do know is both of them do the same thing, so its not really a needle mover. Its just like when Bush got crucified for "no new taxes". If something is the right thing to do, you do it, you dont hurt everyone to just prove that you are "trustworthy." And that seems to be completely lost by everyone. You are making the assumption that these were done for trustworthy reasons. I do not believe that. Not for a second. Especially because none of the decisions made were in a particularly brave political stance, in fact they ALL were made towards the politically favorable stance. That just screams red flag, not change of heart.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 02:38 PM) Is the State Department responsible for balancing the federal budget? And how does the State Department increase revenue? You know people can legitimately change their minds. Like when Trump was a Republican, then a Democrat, then a Republican. Or when Trump married Ivana or Marla. Or when Trump was pro-choice. Anyone who claims that they have never changed their opinion is likely a liar or an idiot. Anyone who doesnt change their position when given facts that should convince them to change, is an idiot. I say this because I myself am a total flip-flopper. I know I know, this is political suicide, but when I was in Jr High I debated on the side of pro-life and against any form of gun control. I guess I should have blindly stayed true to what I originally believed in, but as I learned more, I decided that perhaps my original positions were not correct. Again I know that this will disqualify me from ever being a politician, because it is the end of the world if anyone ever changes their mind. This all has just gotten beyond ridiculous. I can't believe anyone would truly think that Trump and Clinton were undergoing true changes of heart, and not manipulating a situation for a personal gain.

Likely scenario, not really....especially that second part. Skeptical about Frazier having the patience to wait for another long rebuild after how things ended for him and Cincy. Frazier wanted to stay in Cincy and sign an extension.
